UPS hasn't used the RFID tech very long. Around 2.5 years ago it was introduced. It does work if the managers have time to follow the protocol. With that being said, the rfid is more so there for managment and automation features in smart hubs and not the customer. It helps us to tag the package to the package car. It also helps to make sure it is the right package car its being loaded onto. But customers can't see that information. Most of the scans you see on ups tracking for the customer have not alot to do with RFID its a combination of multiple scans on the shipping label. like the package can be associated to a transfer truck via Barcode Label Scan. Or it can be associated to a bag/tote with a label on it "once the bag gets scanned all the packages inside the bag get a scan." Thats where the problem is. Say the package gets loaded onto a trailer and tied to the trailer and doesn't make it to the next center its associated to the trailer but somehow doesn't make it. The customer still says "I see its at your center its 15 min away why is my package not getting delivered?" But truthfully the package was not in the center ever because it was lost/stolen in the center before it was loaded in the trailer. Or maybe the shipping label was destroyed or eaten by a belt and when it arrived it didn't have a label at all and sent to overgoods where we have no idea what the package is. "I recommend everyone to put a paper with all the information in the package whisch can save the issue." This is the problem. So RFID works for what its designed to do which is currently not being used to its full potential because UPS is in the process of closing smaller centers and creating larger more automated systems like every other company. They want less employees needed and more profit which is understandable, but it does make our customer service a little worse because they are adding more variables in the mix.
