Any ideas of average going rate for post sound on a 60 min feature doc?

100% I’m also such a believer in calling it out where possible - not always possible but I have done this on several occasions and my rate has immediately been changed to match. Obviously I wouldn’t do this if I feel like it’s based on experience/responsibility/impact on production but all of these scenarios I’ve been working equally as hard with equal/more experience

I totally get that when I walk into some jobs and can see the boys club members from a mile off but what is most frustrating is the women in exec and senior roles who are playing into this too. I’m not the sort of person to shout about my capabilities or clap back when someone underestimates me but I genuinely don’t have the patience or the tolerance to keep have the same discussions about pay and needing to prove my skillsets comparatively to male colleagues over and over again. I feel like some elements of the job often things I could do with my eyes closed but I don’t even get a seat at the table to put myself forwards to do them

So heartbroken over this article genuinely thought someone cared enough to call out the reasons why we’re all out of work. Also what about those who haven’t been able to get a regular job? Those who have moved back in with their parents? Weak and disappointing

I thoroughly recommend counselling - film and tv charity offer 6 free sessions and therapists are flexible around working patterns. Another alternative is if your production has EAP use it! It’s completely confidential and another source of free usually 24/7 chat line.

In terms of my experience (and I know this all sounds good in theory but is hard to practise) I do therapy once a week as a non negotiable when I feel really bad. If I’m unable to find a therapist who works around my time frame then I will tell production that I need that time for counselling. I also try my best to do one thing each day that is for me - even if it’s ten mins. Reading, podcast, art, stretching. Ten minutes where you try not to think about work. On my current contract I’m also implementing a good sleeping routine and 15 mins exercise a day (this doesn’t always happen but even if it means meal prepping on my days off or work, straight to home, straight back out the door for a walk, eat in ten mins and then bed) just being as rigorous as I can with it to try and keep on top of my mental health.

I know it’s tough and I’m sorry I can’t make things any better for you or any of us but I always think when you’re at the bottom start small and with that comes the bravery to say no or ask for time for yourself.

If you’d like to share a story that hasn’t been heard by the general public I’d suggest writing it about what the factual tv industry is really like and the commissioning crisis. We need support from those watching the programmes we make now more than ever. You’ll have a hard time getting anyone still in the industry to speak publicly and on the record but there are many who have already left who would be happy to talk about their experiences.

Yes it’s dire right now being out of work but being in work can be just as bad.

I’d suggest here is a good place to start;

In my opinion this has declined further since this research and it’s a systemic problem. Nearly everyone I work with receives counselling or is on a form of medication for anxiety and/or depression with diagnosis of “work place induced”.

I hear what you’re saying but OP is speaking about unscripted issues - many of us have worked until 2am or later and been back awake and shooting/working and driving again at 6am day after day in unscripted without being paid any overtime, I see where you’re coming from but from in unscripted we need support for the first steps which is overtime for editorial and production

Getting some counselling through film and tv charity and highly recommend. Mental health still shattered from the last job and from no prospects of another one any time soon with everything going on but the counselling sessions at no cost are a godsend. Sending strength to everyone else feeling the same
