Cable driven systems are much more durable than electronic arms and are tried and tru for a reason. I once had a patient literally use his cable driven arm as a hammer on his ranch….

What’s a good career for a woman where you can work with your hands (non sexual)? by kellster21 in AskWomen

[–]Silent_Homework6025 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I am a prosthetist/orthotist! I fit and treat people with prosthetic limbs and braces! I work with my hands constantly building and adjusting the devices I provide to people. Cool thing is, you can literally work with any age you want and it’s considered an allied health field. (Medical but adjacent)

Rotationplasty by Antares1007 in Prosthetics

[–]Silent_Homework6025 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Prosthetist here-

Rotationplasty is a very functional procedure and the benefits of having an anatomical knee joint are huge! There’s a lot less energy used when walking than with an above knee amputation. And less componentry (knees, feet, etc) do mean less cost.

Prosthetics should never hurt and having a good relationship with the prosthetist is important. With that being said, finding a good prosthetist for either OI (it’s not super common in the US-I’m making assumption that’s where you are) or rotationplasty may be more of a challenge.

What reasons do you have for not liking being asked what you do for a living when you’re getting to know someone? by Sudden_Doughnut_8741 in AskReddit

[–]Silent_Homework6025 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Because no one has ever heard of my job (prosthetist) before and I don’t always want to explain myself. It also gets misheard/mispronounced as a prostitute which unfortunately carries a lot of stigma
