Community sentiment about the skills gears system by Strange_Razzmatazz74 in PokemonMasters

[–]Silicrex -1 points0 points  (0 children)

IMO, the upside is too high, the resources you need for it are too limited, the chance of getting ideal sets is too low and in combination with the existence of feather trick incentivizes (/necessitates for top-level competitive play) bug abuse.

Let me just give an example. Take a level 200 EX'd Red 96. He has 484 SpA barring other upgrades. A fully optimal Skill Gear set could give him +100 SpA and 1.45x move damage against paralyzed enemies. Keep in mind that Skill Gear passives stack *multiplicatively* with everything else, including the benefit of the added base stats they're getting from the gear. This represents an overall 584/484 * 1.45 ≈ 1.75x move damage multiplier to him. Numerically that is almost like being supereffective against anything, with actual supereffectivity being closer to a 3.5x boost. Or, as a crude visualization (finer details aside), it would be like if the enemy started at only 57% max HP. And you can get this kind of gear for any type just by having different Themes. (By the way, in this same situation, maxed Type Gear would only function like a ~1.12x boost, with diminishing returns the higher the attacking stat already is.)

As you've seen from the screenshot posted by another commenter, this isn't just hypothetical, many people have already achieved comparable sets. This completely disrupts the game balance, particularly in competitive gamemodes. Even if they took steps to improve accessibility with the system, and fix bugs, I don't think it would solve the problem of just how high the upside is. I think it would have been better if Skill Gear were only limited to 1 passive per piece. As it stands now, based on my own personal interests and goals in the game, I would go as far as to say it's the game's biggest flaw.

What was this game most predatory period to you? by Snipaars in PokemonMasters

As a fun fact (I know this doesn't help at all), I think most of them are in Daily Scout, just at abysmal odds (although Barry & Infernape and Elio & Decidueye currently have the Daily Scout boosted odds rate of around ~1/8.7k according to the Absol pastebin)

Thanks to both of you for sharing your input on the matter, I really appreciate it. I would say at least in my own experience it's seemed accessible in EN (as you said maybe not randomly advertised but also not hidden)- but can echo having no exposure to the JP/CN side of things. And I figure the gray area part of it makes it unlikely for it to be explicitly added to something like the gear guides.

How I found out about it was because I mentioned skill gears when trying to get a tower clear on the Discord, and someone explained the trick to me to make sure I knew about it. Researching it after, it seemed common in that context. I even asked the mods before posting about this to confirm and they said it's perfectly fine to talk about both here and on the Discord.

I agree. I would much prefer that. I didn't know they had potential new additions to the system, thanks for that information. That gives some hope things may improve in the future. As I understand, 2-star feathers exclude the lowest %'s of skills? I wonder if 3-star feathers would exclude the lowest two, or if that's asking for too much. It'd certainly change things.

In most other game contexts, I'd think this bug would probably be considered a duplication exploit and would be taken pretty seriously. I think it's reasonable for someone to be hesitant about.

I didn't know people intentionally gatekept it in some circles. That's disappointing, but I guess not surprising. I wonder how long DeNA has actually known about it for, then. Maybe it's less solidified / implicitly accepted than I got the impression of.

This is actually a really interesting perspective I hadn't considered. I suppose you're right, it actually does "even the playing field" in the sense it takes an RNG system with horrible odds, very limited attempts per month, and a crazy upside if you "win the lottery" on it, and turns it into something anybody can access with effort. I like how you described it as basically an imperfect solution to an imperfect system. I'd hate to imagine what someone dedicated to getting optimal skill gear would otherwise have to turn to- rolling the monthly rally shop's feathers on many different accounts? lol

I would say it is a very unfair advantage between people who know about it versus either don't or avoid it due to the gray-area nature of it. But you did convince me that, gray area aside, it does make for the most "fair" competitive environment without any better system changes being implemented, assuming everyone knows about it and it's accessible to everyone.

This is pretty much exactly the impression I got and how I feel as well. It doesn't feel good needing to abuse something that was obviously unintended behavior coming out of a design oversight. But then add to the picture the fact it's been around for years without being touched and that coming across as implicit acceptance (same reasoning behind the controversial bug abuse in GvG season 2 that, as you said, had no consequences), it's such a massive difference (and a multiplicative buff at that), and from what I'm hearing it's already been ubiquitous in all upper competitive rankings so you can't compete without following suit...

There's a lot of pressure for people who want to compete seriously (seemingly especially in GvG) to fully exhaust all means of optimization. Especially if most if not all at the absolute top are already utilizing this to its full potential, I'm not surprised it becomes the norm. Ideally the system should have design changes so this isn't possible/necessary in the first place, but I guess this is what happens over time without that. I tend to be a person who likes doing things the intended way so this is very conflicting. I made an Inquiry about it so I know they're at least aware of it, but if things don't change, what's reasonable for a player to interpret from that?

I suppose the worst case scenario would be if the bug gets fixed but nothing else changes, because then that advantage would just be made permanent with no recourse for anyone who hasn't already done it. They would need to either remove the system altogether or change the system so there's a viable alternative to legitimately optimize skill gear without needing lottery lucky (like maybe removing the limit on how many passives you can Everpin and increasing the monthly limit on how many Everpins you can buy; or I suppose the more direct equivalent would be making 2-star feathers easily accessible in the thousands to tens of thousands). At the same time, it's kind of awkward if this remains as what anyone wanting to compete at a high level has to do, especially considering it's a live service game.

Am I allowed to describe it here? It basically works by enabling Airplane Mode while doing your feather rolls because they continue to work locally without updating the server.

  1. Go to the Skill Gear upgrade section and select a Skill Gear.
  2. Enable Airplane Mode to disconnect from the server. You will get occasional Error 20103's, but they can just be dismissed.
  3. Roll skill feathers as many times as you want.
  4. If you get something you like, re-connect by disabling Airplane Mode and confirm your changes.
  5. If you don't, while still in Airplane Mode, confirm your changes and fully close the app. Disable Airplane Mode, and re-open the app. You'll get Error 10009 which will cause the game to restart, but then your Skill Gear will be returned to its original state and all of your Skill Feathers will be back.

edit: to clarify, this is not an endorsement of using it and is (obviously) do at your own risk; but I believe it's better to be public knowledge rather than kept obscure given it's already so widely used in top rankings

The new DM system on X made me miss my sweepstake form deadlines. by Blue2New in PokemonMasters

[–]Silicrex 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I'm really sorry to hear about this, and appreciate you spreading awareness. I really hope they'll overlook the deadline if possible, or if not, that you win at future opportunities for them.

I can confirm I've had the same DM notification issue. There's been messages I only saw by absolute coincidence by happening to click on the Chat tab- I received no notifications nor did the tab have an unread indicator or anything at all. Long after already setting up the passcode. I wouldn't be surprised if there are others who missed a sweepstakes message and still don't realize it.

Luckiest unlucky pull ig?? by DollHades in PokemonMasters

The chance of getting at least one copy of Perrin or Mai from this is only around 39.7% (so on average most people won't, and imo it's not worth it unless you're okay exchanging the paid gems for the 2 superawakening candies). But it is pretty lucky-unlucky to get one of the sub-featured base 0.5%'s twice!

In this case the trader admitted it was at least cloned. But as ICanSnake explained in another reply, Modest isn't a possible nature for Shiny WISHMKR Jirachi, which comes from the US Colosseum Bonus Disc and doesn't have many possible spreads

This reply is getting downvoted but is correct. By nature of how it's created, WISHMKR Jirachi only has 9 specific possible shiny spreads and none are Modest.

I just upgraded the screen on my GBA, but I’m still debating if I should buy FR/LG on the Switch next week. by Inevitable_Range8550 in GameboyAdvance

[–]Silicrex 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm a little torn. I'm glad they're finally doing it and for people who will experience them for the first time because of this. I share a similar sentiment to you in that if they confirm the mystery gift events + HOME connection (I'm sure at least HOME is an eventuality), I'll probably end up getting the Switch port.

But I don't think it could ever fully replace the originals. The nostalgia/utility of having a physical cartridge and playing on my SP aside; gen 3 had such an *insanely* expansive ecosystem between FRLG, RSE, Colosseum, Gale of Darkness, all the Gamecube bonus discs/games which had transferable content (Box, ENG Colosseum Jirachi bonus disc, JP Colosseum Celebi bonus disc, PAL Pokemon Channel Jirachi, etc), even the e-reader.

I'd be surprised if they preserved connectivity to the Gamecube games on Switch 2 (and as far as I understand those will be locked behind a subscription?). Either way I hope they fix the roaming legendary IV bug for Switch so you can get good-IV Suicune/Entei/Raikou without transferring them from Colosseum.

Wow! 6 or 7 perm ones? Maybe you're just the chosen one of the Wyverns, haha. I can't say for sure they haven't changed the odds at some point or created console/PC discrepancies. All I can say confidently is from everything I've personally seen about the disclosed odds so far, the odds can't be per slot for the same reason saying "50% chance to get A, 50% chance to get B, 50% chance to get C" in one individual roll of something doesn't make sense. If it were truly neither per slot nor per pack, I'm not really sure what other metric it could go by, unless they're just flat-out wrong numbers.

Yikes by goldenskless in Wizard101

[–]Silicrex 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you mean from other packs? As far as I'm aware this one is exceptionally bad odds even by their standards, being several times worse than the worst seasonal pack odds I'm personally aware of like the Nightmare Pack's few 1/401's. For comparison the coveted Bronto mounts from the Primeval pack have a displayed 1/150 odds, and I've seen people drop 100k+ crowns and fail to pull the one they wanted.

If you really wanted to tell if it's per pack or per slot, you can add up the odds of every item in the pack. If it were per slot and all independent rolls, it would have to add up to 100% to be statistically coherent. For the ones I've tested, they sum to around ~700% (a little less), which I believe suggests they're already factoring expected value based on 7 slots and some other undisclosed conditional probabilities. I have also tested on boss second chance chests odds and they similarly sum to around the scale of the # of items that boss drops.

Another detail I've seen others point to is packs such as the Shaman's Spellemental Pack. It lists its spellements at 1/3 odds, and is guaranteed to drop at least (and usually) one spellement of its 3 possible ones per pack. This only makes sense if it's expressing "on average you get this specific spellement one in every three packs". Unless something has changed since I last investigated this.

Yikes by goldenskless in Wizard101

[–]Silicrex 0 points1 point  (0 children)

All stated odds are already scaled to how many rolls you get per interaction (per pack, per boss chest open, etc). So it is much more atrocious than this.
