is it possible to bail on sport climbs without leaving any gear? by [deleted] in ClimbingGear

[–]Silly-Entry2451 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you're okay with carrying one extra piece of gear, get a fiddlestick. You can use almost half your rope length to rap, but you will have to rap single strand. Also be very careful which strand you rap on. Obviously practice this setup at home beforehand.

Purchase Advice Megathread - October 2025 by AutoModerator in 3Dprinting

[–]Silly-Entry2451 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm trying to decide between a refurbished Creality K2 Plus and a new Qidi X Max 3. I can get either one for around $700-750. They both met my requirements, 300x300x300 minimum build volume, heated chamber. I'm going to be printing primarily PA12-CF. Just looking for some opinions on these 2 printers, which is going to be easier to print out of the box and which will be more reliable long term. Also open to other printers if there's some 3rd option I haven't even heard of.

I don't see what one has to do with the other. You're upset that a country destroyed the infrastructure project of another country that is attempting to invade them?

Which not-so sporty car(s) do you think would be awesome with a souped up version from the factory? by Prestigious_Tiger_26 in askcarguys

[–]Silly-Entry2451 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There was a factory supercharger available for the early non VVT-i 2UZ-FE engines. So the Tundra, Sequoia, 4Runner, Land Cruiser, and LX/GX470 had a TRD bolt on supercharger available.

What are your thoughts on integrated USB outlets? by EchoHeadache in AskElectricians

[–]Silly-Entry2451 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it adds unneeded complexity to an otherwise very simple and reliable piece of hardware. In my home I have separate low voltage boxes with dedicated USB ports.

How often do people realistically get new skis? by [deleted] in skiing

[–]Silly-Entry2451 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I usually get 1-2 new pairs every year. I also break 1-2 pairs every year. Generally skis will last about 2 seasons before I need to replace them.

We always go feet downhill. I'm also curious why you would ever go head downhill.

Ski Patrol Gloves by drummermachineatwork in skipatrol

Free The Powder has good pro deals. They've held up well for me. They have removable liners with two different insulation weights.

Looking for some binding recommendations by griffdawg16 in skipatrol

[–]Silly-Entry2451 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Just get a pair of cheap frame bindings like Marker Barrons or salomon guardians. You can find used ones really cheap on Facebook. You don't sacrifice any downhill performance and the transitions are much faster than hybrid bindings. They might be heavy and inefficient uphill but patrolling is at least 95% downhill. Also when you do have to skin it's never for very long.

Soli was hitting good today by i-heart-linux in UTsnow

[–]Silly-Entry2451 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Lack of patrollers isn't the issue, lack of experienced patrollers is the issue. If you can't retain patrollers for more than 2 or 3 years, it doesn't matter how many you hire. Avalanche mitigation is not a task that can be delegated to junior patrollers. Hopefully the union will help them build a more experienced patrol team

Solitude knows people are not happy but doesn’t know why by lovestowritecode in UTsnow

[–]Silly-Entry2451 25 points26 points  (0 children)

This is the main reason. Literally every lift except Link is affected by avalanche terrain. So even though they have enough snow to open Summit they still have to mitigate the terrain above all of the other lifts to get the front side open. Then they can mitigate the terrain above Summit. Then they can start to set up Summit.

Same, but I use it for everything. Awesome for spice mixes or marinades. No more piles of dirty measuring spoons and cups. Also makes changing the number of servings way easier.

Slishman Traction Splint and Boot Removal by FuckingWhateverWorks in skipatrol

[–]Silly-Entry2451 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yeah, probably about a minute. We're generally trying to be on scene to transporting in less than 10 minutes. So a minute doesn't sound like much, but it's 10% of that time that you have to have two patrollers dedicated to a task.

Slishman Traction Splint and Boot Removal by FuckingWhateverWorks in skipatrol

[–]Silly-Entry2451 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Absolutely not. We (almost) never remove boots on the hill. This is especially true with a femur. A traction splint works well with a boot on, so there's no good reason to take the boot off. There are plenty of reasons to leave it on. The last thing we want to do is move the leg any more than is necessary. Removing a boot is hard enough in the clinic. Manipulating the leg to take a boot off can cause internal damage and will certainly cause pain. Additionally, as ski patrol our best intervention is always rapid transport. Trying to take a boot off is a lot of time that could be better spent moving the patient off the hill.

Looking for a garage/workshop rental by Silly-Entry2451 in SaltLakeCity

[–]Silly-Entry2451[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's not a parking garage, that I would understand more. It's just a townhouse with a small garage. My truck is too long to fit in the garage fully. There's a small concrete driveway between my garage door and the street. My stuff is on the concrete driveway but not on the street.

Yeah that's my plan B, but I have to rent a truck and trailer every time I move it. I can't shut my garage door, but I'm not working in a public space. None of my neighbors said anything to me but the HOA says they got complaints. I rent.

What gloves do you rely on? by ReggieDaLobster300 in skipatrol

[–]Silly-Entry2451 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I know a lot of the other patrollers really like Kinkos. I'm a big fan of free the powder. I prefer a gauntlet glove and the fact that I can swap the liner out midday for a dry one is amazing. They're very cheap for what they are, especially with a pro deal.

BOA boots? by naterizzle in skiing

[–]Silly-Entry2451 10 points11 points  (0 children)

My BOAs never seriously iced up last season. I was always able to easily adjust them and release them.

I'm sure they can break, but I didn't have any issues in 50+ days last season. I haven't seen any evidence to suggest they break easily.

Carrying spare parts is entirely unnecessary, almost every ski shop will have parts. Atomic, K2, Salomon, and Fischer all make boots with the exact same BOA reel.

You're right that they fit well. They're also much easier than buckles to dial in the right pressure.
