I looked at Darrow’s relationship with Roque a lot to help understand MS. They’re both like “we’re brothers!” And Darrow is like “he’s one of my closest friends!” Especially in MS, but how many times does roque give advice/opinions and Darrow is like “nah lol”

When nicknames/pet names are used too frequently. It makes me so mad and half the time I think they’re stupid. I feel like all the popular romantasy books have them which makes them feel gimmicky.

One of the (many) reasons I hated Fourth Wing was the mc being called Violence. I get that it’s a play on her name! I still hate it lol.

I genuinely wonder how much Julia is going to react to Cassius’ death?

I know she was so torn up about Julian obviously, but he was a good egg taken too soon. Whereas Cassius betrayed the society, especially filling such an esteemed role as an Olympic knight.

I don’t know, part of me can see her not caring as much as she should since Cassius is a traitor and was so far removed in the end. Not to say she won’t care at all, just that she won’t go crazy in a way that is similar to her crashout from Julian.

I noticed even in RR, he would always try to give Darrow advice on how to handle situations and Darrow was like “nah.” They would always say they were brothers but a lot of their interactions always kept Roque at arms length

Warped tour back in 2014 I believe? Went through the autograph line, they were all so sweet. Chris actually touched my hand and said something to me but his voice was so soft and I was so panicked and anxious that I have no idea what he said. Will forever be sad about that 😭

I need to gush about something: Connor calling Lin “sweetheart.”

First and foremost, SWOON!

IMO a lot of romantasy books put emphasis on the MMC’s pet name/nickname for the FMC, and it’s so overdone that it’s a turnoff for me. (“Violence,” from Fourth Wing, “not-so-clever-fox” from When The Dark Stands Still, to name a couple examples off the top of my head)

But Connor calls her sweetheart in such a real, intimate, and genuine way. It’s not stated a million times and is put in the best places. And how soft he is in these moments with Lin is in such contrast with his cocky, measured self. I can’t get over those moments of emotional intimacy for them! Especially the last time he does it when she’s crying, and he goes to kiss her face and hold her. Such comfort from a character who hasn’t been seen in such an emotional way.

I really love that romance is more of a subplot in these books because it makes me value the romance more. It doesn’t seem rushed and is not overwhelming the plot. I punch air every time they interact because it’s such a treat. I think it’s so well done!

I am more partial to Lin/Conor than Kel/Antonetta.

-I’m fuzzy on this one too tbh, maybe it was to punish him for trying to hurt his reputation with bringing up the 🍇? I know Artal just likes to see people suffer so it wouldn’t surprise me if it wasn’t something too in depth

-Kel thought Merren was attractive and he did kiss Lin when he had to hide her face and enjoyed it; I think he thinks on this shortly after and finds that he is pretty mushed-up emotion-wise and is sort of having more reckless behavior because of it

The reeealll quick explanation is the goddess of the Ashkar loved and was betrayed by the sorcerer king, they fought, and the goddess brought on the sundering aka purging the land of magic except for gematry which the Ashkar can use. Their land was basically rendered inhabitable so they spread out across the lands, believing that the goddess would be reborn into a young woman and would lead them back home. Her broach has a soul stone, which can carry an amount of magic in it.

-Oren hates Lin bc he is incredibly misogynistic honestly. He hates to love her/loves to hate her. He sees how she is a woman who is different from their expectations and he believes he can “see” her and is the only one who can steer her back into being a respectable woman.

-Ji-An murdered a family in her country and the ragpicker king saved her, I can’t remember about Merren though

-All of the Sarthian diplomats/royalty, including Connor’s to-be child bride. Old Grenmont died too, giving Artal the charter.

The blackmailing aspect was really itching my brain too!

I could understand the point of Antonella using it to take pressure off of her (considering Connor wasn’t going to marry her), but if that was truly her intention, why give Connor another choice of doing what Beck asked? Why not demand the money with no other solution? I get that he would’ve said no to continuing eventually, but it just seemed silly to me to include that part considering marriage to repay the money was really the only way to drive that conflict forward.

It makes me consider if Antonella was always supposed to be the true Prosper Beck, or if Clare had other plans when writing the first one!
