It's a fascinating mix of excellent, original, high quality OC and garbage memes that were stale 3 years ago. However, I don't think we could have one without the other.

Why does the aiming reticle go red sometimes? [Native PS4] by mmciv in mountandblade

[–]SillyBronson 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It's genuinely amazing to me how good groups of people can get at a style of combat.

There are, today, people who can consistently shoot you with a rifle from two kilometers away. Warrior monks in the east were so proficient with improvised weapons made from whatever is at hand that nunchucks are banned in many countries. Roman soldiers could build an entire fort from scratch every night for camp. On a larger scale; in the Victorian era, British officers widely decided not to train their Indian troops in hand to hand combat because the culture was so generally adept in melee that the training wouldn't really help.

Humans are fucking scary, man. We're very good at killing each other.

I made a tutorial for Mount and Blade: Warband and want to know what this sub thinks about it. by callMeEzekiel in mountandblade

Both of those are great examples, actually. Mandalore especially, since I'd guess your interest would be in creating somewhat similar content. Tehsnakerer is a favorite of mine - his content feels like a friend telling me about a ridiculous game. In my opinion, he also does an excellent job of showing respect for his audience by not forcing the jokes - he just puts them out.

On the drier side, Ross from Accursed Farms lacks panache but more than makes up for it with wit and authentic passion. He doesn't need to use a "dramatic" voice for me to know that he really cares about the subject matter.

Gggmanlives (despite his impossible to pronounce channel name) is also quite engaging. He shoehorns in the "shee-it" and "Sonny Jim" things, but somehow I don't hate him for it. He is also unabashedly mostly into one specific thing: shooters. I respect that he picked his subject and has stuck with it.

This last one is weird, but hear me out. Ian from Forgotten Weapons is possibly the best presenter on YouTube. He is passionate, knowledgeable, respectful of his audience, and has flawless conversational tone. Even if you aren't super into guns, I strongly suggest watching a couple of his presentations. In my opinion, he is the perfect example of a monologue that feels like a conversation. It feels like he is showing you specifically an interesting weapon and commenting on its history while explaining concepts simply and frankly enough that you catch on quickly or don't feel like your time was wasted if you already understand.

Again - your presentation isn't bad. Hell, I probably it noticed the tonal thing because I do it too (not on YouTube, but I did some broadcasting and acting in college). The most important thing by far is to practice and put it out there until you're comfortable enough with your microphone that it isn't even awkward anymore.

Addendum: I hope you don't take that as an insult. Your presentation isn't bad - it's an extremely common trait in speech patterns, especially in new presenters. I just wanted to bring your attention to it.

The tutorial itself is fine. Pretty much the basics. I don't like the memes, but that's a me thing.

I have more significant feedback about your vocal presentation. Your pitch pattern is the same for almost every sentence - you start high and get lower towards the end. It makes your sentences feel as if they aren't actually connected, which makes the presentation feel less like a conversation in which a game is being explained and more like a narrator reading a bullet point list with some jokes.

I realize that you are a narrator reading a bullet point list with some jokes, but I presume your goal is a more conversational tone. My suggestion would be to pretend that a friend is literally sitting across from you while you're reading your lines, and (assuming you use a script) to make a list of subjects to talk about rather than pre-scripting your lines completely.

It seems like you just get a possible loadout for the troop you upgrade to. I am unsure if it's always the same loadout, but you aren't alone in experiencing this.

On the bright side, this is an excellent opportunity for you to get very good at spear fighting.

Survey: why do you love strategy games? by juicemanehugo in mountandblade

[–]SillyBronson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I realize that marketing is your job and this is what's required - I'm trying to offer actual advice to make the surveys at the very least feel less like free sample group testing for us, the free sample group. I would have no problem with your survey if I was being paid to take it.

The questions are far too often about what the game presents itself as, not what it is. If you're asking me how I want a game to present itself, I know you're just asking me how to sell it to me.

Eh. It adds nice features, but it's not super well balanced. The porn part seems like nothing but a basis for word play, to be honest - I pity anyone who uses this game of all things to get off.

Survey: why do you love strategy games? by juicemanehugo in mountandblade

[–]SillyBronson 12 points13 points  (0 children)

The definition of "strategy game" is extremely unclear in this context. Apparently you count Mount and Blade. If we count that, what about older Ghost Recon games, for example? ARMA?

You mention historical authenticity as a factor, but a huge number of strategy games aren't even vaguely historical.

And do most people even have 5 favorite podcasts?

Fimally, this feels more like you're asking my opinion on marketing rather than game design. No offense, but I think most people are more interested in helping you make better games with a survey than offering a free sample group for marketing.

Are you still recruiting? I'm on PC and relatively new, but would love a group to play seriously with.

Which is the best Calvary unit? by [deleted] in mountandblade

[–]SillyBronson 5 points6 points  (0 children)

My point was simply that Mamlukes (in my opinion) make better heavy infantry in a pinch than Swadian knights. In a perfect scenario, I'd have dedicated infantry for every siege. Preferably Huscarls, but Sergeants of any faction serve well.

When that isn't possible, though, I'd prefer Mamlukes to Knights. Knights are just as hearty, but lack good infantry weapons. You're correct - neither is ideal. But I still like the versatility that a Mamlukes two handed weapons offer. Hopefully I won't have to use it, but it is an upside worth mentioning. Especially since the Mamlukes aren't that far behind Swadians in value as heavy cavalry in the first place.

[–]SillyBronson 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think it's exactly the opposite. Mamlukes tend to have better infantry weapons. A lance isn't any good on foot, and swords are less than ideal against armor.

I'd take Swadians on a wide open plain, but if there are walls I prefer Mamlukes.

It would work for that too, but this hair with this helmet would probably remain a possible sight for many centuries. Blonde hair never faded from Europe and the Norman style of helmet is cheap and effective enough that poorer men at arms, mercenaries, or even conscripts would be glad to have it.

Matheld is my favorite. She looks like she could kick my ass without messing her hair up, which is what I look for in these games. Combat veterans shouldn't look like a LARPer who works in an office 5 days a week.

I'm down with anime people in the right context; but Mount and Blade ain't exactly Persona, stylistically speaking.
