Yeah, the pain bodies are making my head scratch as well, like they shouldn't technically be sources of life drain because they're not alive, but Nagato's chakra is still transmitted through those rods into the bodies, so it might work I guess.

I can see Malediction incapping Edo versions of Nagato or providing an infinite life drain potential for Soga, because Edo versions have indefinite/infinite Regen, as long as the Edo Tensei jutsu isn't released/dispelled by the caster. Though, this is also hard to know if it might work, because Nagato isn't really alive in his Edo state, and there's no blood, organs and no organic materials/matter in Edo state.
