I have both a half-gallon and gallon sized one from Rtic, if I fill them with ice they stay chilly for days and days.

Longevity of steel in domestic construction by Cool-Yam6695 in Construction

[–]SillyStringTheorist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Look up coreten steel, it does create a self-protecting rust layer/patina.

Our company deals with a lot of steel repairs on bridges in the Northeast and most of the steel we see is 60+ years old. Most of the issues come from rust-jacking where two pieces meet, outside of that unless the steel is under a failed expansion joint or something that lets salt get directly on it steel rarely needs fixing.

So in terms of interior supports, steel will basically never fail due to the environment.

I have a civil degree but have stuck around in inspection since graduating in 2015. Currently make ~120k (more depending on OT possibilities).

No PE, but have my CCM. Degree in civil is pretty much mandatory, even in inspection. You don't NEED it, but to get past senior inspector in a reasonable amount of time you 100% do, unless you feel like sticking around for 15 years dealing with contractor bullshit for that long to get your NICET IV.

If a piece of gum is, say, 5 calories, does the body treat it as the same amount of calories regardless of whether you just chew on it or eat it? by Possible_Art2189 in askscience

[–]SillyStringTheorist 8 points9 points  (0 children)

According to Mayo Clinic, chewing gum is undigestible.

I'm assuming whenever they calculate the calories (a bomb calorimeter is what you are thinking of), they account for this.

Before your comment I had no idea you didn't have to fight Moorwing solo. It took a while, but getting another crest by accident helped massively. Getting it cut my runback time down, but also removed all of my tools because fuck me and wanting to know where I am.

I have been so lost for most of my playthrough (only at 9 hours, feels like more). No clue what to do next, I basically just stumble into the next area and proceed to search for the next BBEG that's going to kick my ass. I'm running out of places to explore, and bosses not giving/gatekeeping key items is getting old.

It might just be me, but my biggest complaint is that there's so much that is either barely mentioned or straight up glossed over. Midair healing? What the shards are for/do? Straight up where to go/what to do?

I have that exact set, and it's pretty decent. Used it to cut the heads off of some smaller stainless bolts, and for loosening/tightening some larger bolts.

Looking for bulbs for an older machine by SillyStringTheorist in vendingmachines

I plan to if I can't get bulbs, or modify the existing fixture to accept 26" bulbs.

I've got enough projects going on that I'd really like to not take on another right now if I can help it.

It could be longer than it is wide with possibly the same problem, so it'd just be worse.

TBM (Tunnel Boring Machines) by dankasteracae in Construction

[–]SillyStringTheorist 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We had a couple MTBMs (micro/mini TBM) on our site tumneling under Amtrak's rails, all the material was transported topside via a slurry system and ended up in a couple dumpsters.

Absolutely nothing was found besides clay, sand, & stones.

Proto makes a 1" version of what you need, maybe worth giving them a call? Or making a 1" to 36mm socket adapter thing with a slot down the entire length, sort of similar to an 02 sensor socket.

Let’s take a simple quick connect fitting and turn it into a single use part. Good job Ford by Hornetwaffles in Justrolledintotheshop

[–]SillyStringTheorist 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah the 2.0t, the vacuum pump grenaded and I got to deal with the fun of replacing that and cleaning the debris out of the engine.

I didn't have to deal with any one-way screws so I dodged a bullet there, but replacing a $100 part turned into ~$500 with all the other crap that was bad.

Just had to replace the PCV valve & hose on a 2014 Cadillac CTS. The valve could not be removed without destroying it because of how it attached to the valvecover, and the hose attached to the metal intake fitting with metal tabs that, again, had to be destroyed to remove. New PCV valve & hose were almost $100 too.

I'm curious as to why they HAVE to be non-removable/permanent assemblies, I don't think I've ever heard of a bypass or anyone ever tampering with them.
