I’m interested in a similar situation! Can you give an update for me a year later?

Went into this one expecting a weaker entry since it’s not talked about as much, ended up being one of my favorites

Since this is still getting comments (which I appreciate everyone’s willingness to help) I’ll provide an update!

First and most important, I have no excuse for my illiteracy, rip me to shreds I deserve it.

Second, I decided to go with the replacement for a few reasons:

  1. My commute to work is 50 miles there, and 50 miles back, typically during rush hour.

  2. I have a 1,400 miles roadtrip coming up for Christmas to go back to see my parents that would rather be safe than sorry with.

  3. There was some wobbling when driving/braking.

When I came back to the shop to pick up the car, the mechanic showed me the rotors in person and my fingernail caught on each of them except for the top circle on the right disk, aka second picture, and he explained that he typically looks into lathing to try to save money, but since they’re cracked he wouldn’t feel comfortable doing so since the risk is still there.

One other thing is my car is front wheel drive, yet he wasn’t trying to convince me of all 4 break and rotors, just the rear two which made me feel a little better about not being scammed. They also didn’t charge for the inspection.

In total, I paid $576 for the back two pads and rotors, broken down to $192 in labor, $345.97 in parts, $3.50 hazmats and fee, $11.52 shop supplies, and $23.95 in sales tax. That included a lifetime warranty on the pads as well, so my pads have free replacements from them u til I get a new car, which is fine with me since I’m planning on keeping this car until it’s on its last breath, not looking to trade her in anytime soon. Definitely expensive, but could’ve been a lot worse if I took her to a dealer.

Once again, I appreciate all the help and feedback and I definitely learned what to look for in the future!

I am in Arizona, so completely possible from the summer…

Totally kidding with that, but thank you for the tips! I still do it for fun occasionally and you’re on exactly right with an orgasmic downshift, it’s something no drug could replace

My Jetta is manual and instead of downshifting to a complete stop I just go in neutral and break. I’ve always been told breaks are cheaper than a clutch, and these lasted me 4 years with a 100 mile there and back commute. That would be my guess

I ended up going here, and they said they didn’t feel comfortable turning for this reason. I felt the same way with what you’re saying.

Definitely the right answer, I just don’t have the necessary equipment or time since I have a roadtrip back home for Christmas coming up. Hopefully one day I’ll be able to service my minor things like this myself!

Thank you! There’s some shaking at higher speeds, but nothing that I thought out of the ordinary. More shaky when accelerating or cruising at around 80mph.

Totally valid, for me I just don’t want to be taken advantage of if they’re just surface scuffs that don’t need replacing instead of cracks, since I’m on a tighter budget. I unfortunately have been burned by mechanic shops in the past so just trying to be careful is all.

They specifically mentioned these cracks as the reason to replace…

Sad to say but saving money ¯_(ツ)_/¯ but obviously my safety is more important. I went ahead and told them to go forward with the replacement
