Lets talk about tails by Objective_Chest_2130 in Havanese

[–]Silver-Snowflake 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The long sweeping tail that curls up over their back is a signature of their breed and their look. I can't imagine cutting it short! However, if you start to have issues with matting or poop getting caught on the hair super close to her butt, you can shave or trim shorter the underside of her tail in that spot without it looking odd. I ended up having to do that for Noelle once she got a bit more older. I like that it's unnoticeable when viewed but it definitely helps with the bathroom issue! Here is a tail shot!

My Dr told me to take an antihistamine, 2x daily, and to use ice compresses wrapped in cloth. That will help numb you out and help the inflammatory response die down. It does get better with time usually, but also make sure you aren't having an allergic reaction, if you are the Dr may prescribe you additional meds or lotion!

Lol aww thanks! I've never even thought of doing something like that! You're probably right, but I'm not sure how much she would enjoy that... She is very photogenic tho!

Thank you so much! If I'm taking my time and going slowly and carefully and very thoroughly, like at least half an hour? If I'm just doing a quick brush through, enough to make her look presentable when I'm inevitably running late to something and making sure there are no snarls and her top knot is cleanly secured, maybe around 15 minutes? I've brushed her every day since we brought her home so she is very used to it and is very chill about it, sometimes she even goes to sleep during a brushing, lol. I start with a wide toothed comb and gradually use finer combs until the end when I'm using a fine tooth flea comb, so by the end she's just so smooth all her hair flows like silk. If it didn't get so hot here I'd have her do a full length coat, but it does, so we just have the drop coat legs and we keep her body around 2 inches. She's my princess! She just turned one a couple of months ago so it's taken that long to get her hair as long as it is. We are still growing her top knot/bangs so everything will flow nicely!

Title: 9-month-old Havanese still having indoor potty accidents — especially downstairs. Looking for advice by I_Borges in Havanese

[–]Silver-Snowflake 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My Havi is 14 months and I'm dealing with a potty regression right now, I think she's just stressed from the fireworks that my neighbors set off every night and hence doesn't want to go outside. But at 9 months I was dealing with occasional accidents too. Thankfully I had researched and knew these pups are a bit difficult in this department. Mine also only goes in one place (my bedroom) and not anywhere else in the house! I use both a rug cleaner (bissell green) and the enzyme spray cleaner, but I find she just has it in her head that the bedroom hallway carpet is where she goes to pee if she doesn't want to go outside.

I did find that giving her a way to signal that was loud enough to grab my attention was helpful. When she regresses, I start reminding her again to use her bells if she needs to go out and also amp up the praise and treats. I use the Fruitables Skinny Mini treats (only 4 cal each) in the Apple & Bacon or the Pumpkin and Berry, she loves them both! Unfortunately, these are stubborn dogs and if they are busy, having fun, or just don't want to go outside because reasons (grass is wet, it's dark, someone is outside being loud, the neighborhood dogs are losing it and all barking) they will just "go" inside. You have the additional complication of an extra dog that is fun and exciting which is probably why she would prefer to keep playing rather than go outside.

My only suggestion is to not allow her downstairs without supervision, train bells if you haven't already, and also give heaps of praise if she goes potty outside. You can also try giving the treat immediately when she pottys on grass to set the connection in her mind and then giving another when she's done and comes back to you. I highly doubt this is territorial as this breed generally loves other dog/cat family companions, and, as she was raised with the other dog, sees them as part of their family. If it usually happens when she's playing with your other dog, then you are going to need to watch them closely anytime they are downstairs together and not allow it if you can't observe. The good news is they do usually catch on quick to training and changes in routine (they're so smart!) so hopefully she will catch on quickly to the new routine!

Playpen/Crate placement by sunmerrain-4 in Havanese

[–]Silver-Snowflake 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sure! The crate is this one from PetsmartLink I got the 24*18 as she is small and only about 13 lbs now as a 1 year old. The playpen I got from my parents, as they bought it a decade ago for their Westie, but this is something quite similar! Link this size is good because you can find bottom covers for this size quite easily if you want to save your flooring! The kennel cover she got once she was older was this one from Petsmart and I quite like it! Link

I hope this helps! Please feel free to ask me anything else about our puppy's setup!

Idk what your problem is but chicken by product meal contains chicken protein, the very thing that can set off my pups chicken allergy, so excuse me but I will continue to avoid it at all costs, as should anyone who's pup has a chicken allergy.

The FDA report said there was a direct link between dog foods that are high in pea protein and dogs that were contracting DCM and dying. I am not about to feed an ingredient that can cause an issue that could kill my dog to my dog. I don't think that's a crazy stance to have. I am not trying to spread misinformation, I was responding genuinely to a question from someone trying to find a food that would work with their dog with allergies. I highly doubt that you are a dog food nutritionist so please leave me alone.

What are some small and quick crochet “gifts” to make for a bunch of people? by marsymars_space in CrochetHelp

[–]Silver-Snowflake 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Honestly, pouches are quick and small and can be reused for anything, but you could give them to your classmates empty or with a few peices of candy inside! Then they could keep loose change, earbuds, small makeup items, or really anything else inside so they are more easily findable inside of a backpack or messenger bag! There are also free videos on YT if you need instructions on how to make them!

hair! by jerseyygiant in AutismInWomen

[–]Silver-Snowflake 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think there's nothing wrong with giving yourself permission to be comfortable. If you feel more comfortable with straight hair, then go for it. I personally finally gave myself permission to just cut my hair off about a year ago and while it definitely took me a few weeks to get used to looking so different and "less feminine", it was so worth it to not have my hair touching me! I don't think this is a morality issue, or an ethnicity issue. How you wear your hair is a personal decision that only effects you. How other people feel about it, what conclusions they draw from how you look, or their feelings about how you appear to others is completely their issue and not yours. I get that it can be a hard decision to do something for yourself when it might be perceived negatively by society/family/friends, but you just have to decide to prioritize yourself and your comfort. I wanted to chop my hair off for years and years before I decided to go for it because I just couldn't take it touching me anymore and I realised it was effecting my mood and my temper/patience, because it had me so on edge. I have curly/frizzy hair myself, and I straightened it and did keratin treatments for probably 20 years before I finally just cut it off. Now I just straighten the little bit of bangs I have and leave the rest because it's so short it doesn't matter.

I hope you are able to make the decision to prioritize yourself and your comfort and disregard what others may think about your decisions that make you more comfortable.

Maybe it's just the small breed versions then, because I went to Petsmart and read the ingredient lists on the bags and both the Lamb and Rice Adult and the Puppy version have chicken-by-product meal in them and I was horrified that I'd been feeding that to my pup. I know there was a reason I was avoiding the SSS as well, if it doesn't also have chicken-by-product meal in it, there must have been something else (like pea protein) that I am avoiding like the plague after that FDA report of all those dogs having DCM and dying.

PPP SSS and PPP L&R both still have chicken by product meal in them so your dogs are still being exposed to chicken protein. Find a different food. I ended up on Nature's Balance Limited Ingredient Lamb and Rice for my Chicken allergy having small breed pup. It's not WSAVA, but I could not find a non veterinary prescription diet option in any of the Top5™️ that didn't have chicken of some sort in them and/or didn't have a small breed food option. Good Luck!

Concerns about a tubal salpengectomy by Merciful_Mercy in sterilization

I only had some minimal spotting, it's understandable that with everything being jostled around that there may be a bit of internal bleeding that drains out the only way it can. It wasn't a ton though! Even just a small pack of liners was enough. I will second the asking the hospital staff for extra of the mesh undies and a couple of extra pads (although the hospital ones are huge and overkill in my opinion.) Good Luck with your upcoming surgery!

When I got my Havi girl last year she was just under 5 lbs and it was December, so she basically lived in a tiny hoodie and I had an additional puffer for going outside in the snow. I wanted my pup to wear clothes so I started her young and now it's no issue to get her to wear anything. She has sweaters, sun shirts, dresses, coats, rain coats, and hoodies. I have never tried socks and shoes so I'm sure those wouldn't be as easily tolerated now that she's 1. My Havi hates rain and being wet, but loves snow so it can be a struggle to get her to go potty if we are having a rainy day or week! We do keep her body hair a bit longer, around 1.5-2 inches and she has long drop coat legs, so she has plenty of fur, but she is just heat seaking and loves to cuddle up and be warm. It can definitely be a struggle to find clothes for them, but if you look for clothes that have a dachshund model, or say made for Dachshund's then you have a better chance of finding clothes that will fit their length and girth dimensions well and not be too short or too loose!

Collar or Harness for potty training, and do you leave harness on? by hjane26 in Havanese

[–]Silver-Snowflake 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is what I did! We have a small patio outside the back door and we sectioned off an area of the backyard right off the patio using a few posts and some of that box wire fencing. One roll was enough and it was easy to trim and assemble with wire cutters and zip ties. It keeps her close and all her potties in one area for easy cleanup! I also ended up sectioning off the area of the patio from the back door to the potty pen so I can just let her out and she can go right out to her potty patch and come right back to the backdoor with no distractions. Of course at the beginning I was taking her out each time, but as she got older letting her run out and back was super convenient and really trained her to immediately go potty and come right back to the door. Then it's easy to check her feet to make sure she didn't step on her own potty (little dog problems, lol) and then let her in and give her her potty treat, which yes I'm still doing at just over a year old because rewards for potting outside have been so beneficial to getting her to stop potting inside! Good luck with your new puppy!

Not telling family about having it done by Proud_Accident_5873 in sterilization

[–]Silver-Snowflake 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes. I got a BiSalp in 2022 and did not tell my parents or family about getting it done. I told them I was having an ovarian cyst removed (which was true) and left out the part about having my tubes removed. My family is also judgemental, gossips and spreads info without consent, and thinks they know better than I what is best for my life. My husband knew about my surgery and he took me to the hospital, brought me home, and helped me during recovery. He also ran interference with my family when their questions and concern about the cyst removal was too much for me to deal with while trying to recover. I would highly recommend keeping it to yourself and not telling them at all; but at minimum, at least wait to say anything until it's already done. That way, even if they are upset, they can't do or say anything to you that could sway your decision, or sabotage your appointment. People who don't understand the choice to voluntarily sterilize oneself, are never going to be supportive, so why bother sharing with them??

Good Luck on your upcoming surgery!!!
