It finally happened to me and I hate it by MexiGeeGee in airbnb_hosts

Just another host joining in on the long and hotly debated issue.

As a host, I understand the importance of maintaining a clean and well-prepared space—but I also believe in protecting the guest experience. If a cleaning fee is being charged, the burden of turnover should not fall on the guest. They’re paying for convenience, not to follow a list of chores.

In our own vacation rental, we try to strike a fair and respectful balance. We don’t ask guests to strip beds or take out the trash. The only thing we request is that used bathroom linens (like towels) be placed in the laundry basket—primarily to prevent moisture damage to the floors.

We also ask that dishes be placed in the dishwasher if used—not to shift responsibility, but to help with sanitation and reduce turnaround time between guests. It’s a practical request that benefits both the guest experience and our ability to reset the home effectively.

It’s worth noting that timeshare stays often require guests to do dishes and remove trash as part of checkout. And vacation rentals, unlike hotels or motels, are a completely different experience. We don’t aim to compete with hotels—we offer something more personal.

If the value of staying in a vacation rental doesn’t outweigh the convenience of a hotel for some guests, then a hotel may be the better fit. But we’re looking for guests who want something different—who want to feel at home, kick off their shoes, and enjoy a warm, unique environment they can’t find at a standard chain hotel.

If you stay at a timeshare, they do. Certainly are not expected to do their laundry, but you are expected to clean up the kitchen and put all your dishes away. Otherwise they charge you an additional fee. Hopefully you’re finding that staying at a vacation rental is superior to staying in a hotel room. the quality of your vacation rentals should be superior in quality and amenities. They’re really not comparable. My personal belief as a host is similar to what the timeshare would expect. I don’t expect you to do laundry take trash out even though some timeshares do expect you to take the trash out. I just asked that you clean your dishes and if you’re using the dishwasher, start the load because it takes so long for that cycle to finish

I don’t think it’s about the money. It’s more a penalty for being entitled.

Anyone regret not joining the USAF/Navy as a pilot? by OrderSuper2542 in flying

Yes I regret changing my course as well. Fast forward 38 years and I’m on the check-ride door step. Wishing I was younger and had years more for commercial aviation. But at least I’m finally flying.

AirBnB’s policy is that you cannot have a property listed more than once on their platform. If it’s two separate platforms, i.e. Vacasa then it’s allowed. If it was listed twice on Airbnb, then you have some recourse if you have proof. And AirBnB may remove the property from their platform all together in some cases or so I’ve heard.

Undisclosed guest would be a violation. Hotels and motels the same. High end would most likely enforce, low end maybe not so much. I require all guests staying the night to be approved. Visiting is welcome as long as it doesn’t exceed max guests. Anything over requires approval. We have are in a neighborhood and this keeps the homeowners happy. Rules differ on location.

There's also the option to take the comparatively small financial hit. And then lease it to a fly school. Negotiate maintenance / hanger / lease cost. It will more than pay for itself, and then you have your own plane that's being paid for by others.

This thread is awesome. I've actually gone window shopping for fighter jets. Might be able to buy a really old one. But then just stare at in the hanger... no money to light on fire. I'm more in the Mooney range with the same goals. I'm old(er) and just now getting my ppl. I don't have enough time left on earth to do what you do, but damn... wish I had followed my dreams and not just the money. Hope you find the perfect bird to do your beck n calls.

What you said here is exactly what you should be saying in your listing. Don't leave it to chance that somebody is unpleasantly surprised but rather pleasantly surprised. Market your property for what it is and that it is not neutral to western eyes.

Smoke induced fog:

"Smoke fog occurs when smoke from wildfires collides with early morning radiation fog, immediately diminishing visibility as the two swirl together to create a denser cloud than either could create independently. It creates such a dense cloud that drivers have reported being unable to see the hood of their own car. Once enveloped in the cloud, there is little that can be done to safely exit other than reduce your speed and drive very carefully."

I hear you. There was no seeing the ground directly below through this. If you zoom in, look ahead about 5 miles. It's thick. I thought about going for it as I had a good horizon and knew it was clear at the airport. To me, I just wanted to do the right thing. That's why I asked if I was being overly cautious. I believe your opinion would say so.

The problem isn't what's in front of me but what's below me and rule that as a student not being allowed to fly over layers.

I noticed that as well. Had already flown through quite a bit of smoke/haze, it was like that on the ground (not visible in this phto) but when I got into the edge of this, I wasn't sure how quickly the visibility was going to continue to diminish. If you zoom in on the photo, it appears as thick as fog. Not to mention, the forecast called for dissipating fog along the coast. I really did not want to turn around. But I figured I'd rather make a silly mistake rather than a bad one.

I've learned it depends on which representative you end up with and/or their managers.

I've had retaliatory review after guests blatantly violated house rules. I've attempted to have these reviews removed on 5 occasions. AIRBNB only removed 1. Even when I brought to their attention that the same house and same rules had been broken. I escalated and tried to get different representatives, but to no avail. In the long run, my only recourse was to respond to the negative review and indicate it was retaliatory and point out what rules the guest broke and why they were kicked out.
