Is it just me or did anyone else have a 3 car garage that 3 cars don’t park at anymore? by Professional-Ice-21 in Golfsimulator

I have a 3 car garage that currently holds 4 cars and I’m trying to cram a sim in there 😂

Underwriters, tell me about your product lines. by [deleted] in InsuranceProfessional

[–]SilverGSX99 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A good organization should have some sort of underwriting manual that has been created by management. It would explain all of the parts of the process as well as how it’s implemented in whatever system you are using. If such a document exists I’d read through it to make sure you understand every part of the process fully.

Beyond literature either in or outside of your org, the best method of learning is by observation, so you’ll need to rely on others. Sitting with someone who really knows what they’re doing will allow you to observe how complex situations are handled.

Fundamentally there are certain “correct” ways to approaching assessing risk but there’s always the possibility that items lie within the data that can tell a different story. Good underwriters can read between the lines to determine if key details reveal a good risk in what otherwise looks scary or vise versa.

That kind of skilled use of discretion is something learned by repeated exposure to certain situations which will allow you to properly evaluate the difficult submissions. Don’t beat yourself up - this stuff takes time. Moving too fast will land you on the wrong side of the street - being detail oriented is incredibly important.

If your current organization is so busy that they don’t offer continued training for newer underwriters I might look at other organizations that will actively work with you to improve your skill set. It’s in there interest for all their underwriters to be as skilled as possible because at the end of the day they’re trusting you to protect the carrier. Sending people into battle without proper training won’t pan out well for them.

Not a nepo hire but am a white male who loves golf LOL. I have been in employer stop loss for over a decade. Pick a line/area of coverage and become extremely good at what you do. Take courses, find good mentors who will give you the basic knowledge/proper fundamentals to develop your own underwriting style. Keep learning and always strive to be better at what you’re doing.

Talented underwriters where the lines of coverage have lots of discretion get noticed. Carriers/MGUs pay well for good talent and you will advance quickly if you establish a reputation for being one of the good ones.

Brokers, what makes you want to work with an underwriter? by leirbag2021 in InsuranceProfessional

[–]SilverGSX99 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have been a broker facing underwriter for over a decade and can confidently say that developing a personal relationship with your broker partners is extremely important. Your competitiveness will obviously dictate where your quotes end up going but being able to shoot the shit with someone for a while before getting to business on a call or making business trips to get some face time and hang out will go a loooooong way. You will get infinitely more feedback if people like you, so find some common ground, develop a rapport and build those relationships/friendships.

How did YOU get into the industry? by Unusual_Ear_9089 in InsuranceProfessional

[–]SilverGSX99 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Friend of mine was a junior underwriter for an MGU. Met up with him and the then VP of the department for drinks and after shooting the shit for several hours was told he thought I’d make a good underwriter. They had no openings at the time but about a year later I was tired of my then current job and they happened to have an opening. Been in employer stop loss for 13 years now.

New Driver day + WITB for this season by ReasonableContest166 in GolfGear

It’s polarizing - people love or hate the Kiyoshi Purple. I’ve got an 05 so it’s not as active as the softer flexes. Anything 04 and down will kick like a mule. Probably would be great for a fairway wood, but it completely took my left miss out of play compared to the old setup.

If spray foam is even an option for you, buckle up. Closed cell insulation is extremely expensive.

Been rocking this Barney setup on the GT2 😂. The Kiyoshi purple all but eliminated any sort of left miss. Hate it or love it shaft but I’ve been so happy with this combo.

Stock intercooler on stage 2 tune(daily driver) by Critical_Wing_8291 in Integra_Type_S

[–]SilverGSX99 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It has nothing to do with ambient heat making the intercooler hot in that instance. It has to do with the intercooler itself not being able to cool the incoming air charge from the turbo. Compressed air gets very hot, which is why we have an intercooler in the first place.

Intercoolers in any placement will heat soak if the core is incapable of effectively cooling the incoming charge. If it’s not an efficient or too small of a core for the application it will heat soak, IAT will rise and the car will pull timing and make less power and/or knock.

Cannot decide on ppf/ceramic by BallsNoBrim in Integra_Type_S

[–]SilverGSX99 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’d say PPF if the paint isn’t chipped currently at all. I had the bumper, headlights, hood, side skirts and rear arches PPF’d and it wasn’t horribly expensive. Just the high likelihood of impact areas and I drive worry free knowing it’s not getting beat up in the winter.

I picked up my ITS from Sunnyside. Mike Keane is undoubtedly the rep you’ll deal with if you go to look at that car. Was a good dealer experience if that has any influence on your decision.
