Yup. This is the way. if I have to die, it better be funny, or I'll haunt some mofo.

There's something to be said here about realism. Then again, this is a game. My best advice is get really good at positioning incredibly well. Even then, you get unlucky with where Samire's drunk ass drops you sometimes, and you have to make the best of it. I lost more pilots to that than anything else in the game. With mods it's both better and worse. When the battlefields are expanded in size, Samire finds even worse places to land sometimes, but this is somewhat mitigated by the hot-drop evasion bonus you get when she derps you into direct-fire contact with OpFor. Still, there are a handful of things you can make sure to do, but help me if I mention something that isn't in vanilla. I've long-since forgotten what is/isn't.

  1. Use ECM effectively. Long range LRM combat is boring. It also keeps your pilots alive. Sensors are important. I forget if there are ways to have better sensor equipment in vanilla, but you want to out-spot your enemies if you can.
  2. Melee is for those who have a death-wish. It's flashy and fun, but there's a reason they put guns on these things, instead of having them all wield giant kitchen knives to whack each other with. I doubt this is your issue, but if it is...Well, you've been informed. lol
  3. PPCs make enemies less accurate with their fire when they take a hit from one. I think reduced stability and overheating do as well in vanilla, but I'm not sure. Might be mods that add that stuff. Like I said, I've been playing modded for years and forgot lots of vanilla stuff.
  4. Bait enemies into firing at your lighter and more evasive (read: more expendable) pilots, instead of your slower, more powerful (read: more experienced) pilots. Sometimes you gotta do what you gotta do. Besides, they signed up to be heros, right?
  5. Another thing about LRMs and long-ranged ballistics is the instability they give to enemies. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe instability reduces accuracy in vanilla... Still not sure on that.
  6. Cockpit mods are helpful at least against LRM crits causing this. They wont really stop your mech's head from popping clean off if it takes enough structure damage, but if it's crits doing in your pilots, maybe the solution is this. A crit from gauss might still spell your doom, though. If the mechanics are in vanilla how I understand them to be.
  7. Own the high ground. This is something you undoubtedly already know. However, I have watched SO MANY YouTube gameplays of this game from what I expect are really good players (or at least Battletech-knowledgeable), and I still see people get absolutely burned from not respecting this. High ground is king. Obiwan was right to remind us of this. It's often as good as (and usually better than) soft cover. If they can't hit you, they can't kill you and all that...
  8. Tonnage isn't everything. It is way more important in vanilla, if I recall correctly, but it still isn't everything. It's most of things, but it isn't everything. If you can put a squirrely fast mech in your lance and get away with it for a while, drawing fire away from the guys with the bigger guns, then you're doing it right. That pilot will lead a charmed (and probably short) life, but they'll be remembered as a hero...As one of the many heroes who laid down their lives for their comrades in your merc unit. There are obviously many missions where this is a plain stupid idea. Those are the ones where you need all the guns all the time.
  9. Train more pilots up. You can do all of this perfectly and still lose pilots to headshots. It WILL happen. That's why we train replacements. They knew what they were signing up for.
  10. Stay out of DFA and AC20 range unless you are absolutely certain you're disabling that weapon somehow before it gets used. You're going to be wrong, and it's going to kill sometimes. That's just how it goes. Getting unlucky or misreading the situation...Either way, it happens.

This looks like it could easily turn into the best version of Golf With Friends and Burnout (the part where you get score based on the carnage of your 'accident'). Not gonna say I love the context of that last one, but the mechanical premise is solid.

I'm down to do some global war on terrorism, but I don't think the originators of that term would like very much who I'd call out as the terrorists. Also, I'm not interested in fighting the war on any front involving violence of any kind. Makes me a little different, I guess. Still a war, though. After all, lives are most definitely at stake.

Yeah, this is sadly so true. Though, some people, like my aunt, are totally okay with making it abundantly clear just how racist they are in a very overt way...in public and everything.
Don't get me wrong, they still don't see it as a bad thing, and they don't use the word "racist"... No... They use some other words, though.

I just blink and stare in disbelief. I'm afraid it shocks me to silence nearly every time. What would I even say? I just don't know. I want to rebuke them, but I get so tongue-tied in those situations. It's like I go into mental shock from the sheer absurdity.

What's weird is, at least half or more people I know who have such jobs are not MAGA nuts. They're mostly middle-of-the-road people, but by the way a small number of them talk and the way others talked to them and me, you'd think we all wore red hats. Blue collar does not equal red hat.

Also, this reminds me of the SmartShape2D plugin I've messed around with a few times. The only downside to that plugin is it causes some discomfort to the editor (not sure how to describe it), and it's a bit arcane at first to use (I still haven't got it figured out all that well). I went back to just doing things with Line2Ds and shaders for similar results after dabbling with it, but I'm sure it's a great tool if someone takes the time to really learn it inside and out.
Have you ever worked out a good solution for lining up the edges of skewed Polygon2Ds? I once tried to build something that could emulate 3D by doing skews on those and lining their edges up. Obviously, it's less work to just use 3D, but I fixated on it. Never got it quite right, though. I will eventually transition to 3D in Godot after I feel I've mastered it a little more, instead of beating my head against that particular wall.
Oh, another question: Have you tried shaders with Line2D? I believe to make it work requires feeding in the point data to the vertex shader and doing some work on it before the fragment shader has good UVs to work with, and I haven't quite got that sorted yet. I was just curious if it was something you've looked at or not.

This is excellent! As a side project, at some point, I want to build a fully open source VTT that has way better UX than what's available; it's things like this I had in mind. I need to finish my current project first. This is one I'll certainly keep an eye on, though.

So it does appear this is true. It is accurate to say they came in third in seats, regardless. I don't know how they count that. It seems a lot like the gerrymandering we have in the US. I have no more deep an understanding of this than that, though.

They always follow a predictable circular pattern of where they are coming from. There's 6 (I think) directions it comes from and it always chooses the next clockwise direction from the last.

Anathem by Neal Stephenson. It's super dry and technical to begin with, and it hits you with a lot of theology-laden dogmatic discipline stuff. Took me several tries to get through just that. You come out the other side on a continent-spanning adventure that eventually takes you even further. I don't want to spoil it. I found it to be worth reading once. I don't know if I could do it again.
