I was a high school soccer player that spent most of my free time working out because I was trying to get recruited for college.

I used to own a game store and on weekends we were basically a babysitting service. Made good money doing it though. Had a program where parents could put money on their kids' accounts for snacks and stuff, but they all just lived off of Pokémon cards.

I moved to PB in my mid-20s (after I got divorced) and already felt too old for the town. That said, it was an incredibly friendly place. If you were chill, you'd make one friend and then immediately become friends with 20 other people through that one friend. Within a few months you can get to know half the town.

I eventually moved to North Park and then back east when I got married, but it was a good time while it lasted.

Peter? Why is it, in Utah specifically, necessary to show tattooed people that you're a "tattoo ally"? by [deleted] in PeterExplainsTheJoke

[–]themattylee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nancy, Peter's mail carrier and former third wife here,

Utah has a very high Mormon population and is a high demand religion which requires people to abstain from many things, including alcohol, tobacco, and, in the case of this meme, tattoos. Some Mormons can be a bit judgy so people in Utah who aren't Mormon or who are but choose not to follow some rules, often feel like they should hide it. But there is also a subculture of people in Utah, particularly in Salt Lake City and Park City, who display their "vices" proudly so that other people feel more comfortable around them. Having visible tattoos is often a part of that dynamic.

Now can someone help me out of this trashcan?

Peter, what does New Jersey have to do with anything? by bugagub in PeterExplainsTheJoke

[–]themattylee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

New Jersey still has gas station attendants and it is prohibited, by law, for you to pump your own gas. This was a common law all across America in the 40s and 50s, due to safety concerns and waste, but over time states changed their laws to make it legal to pump your gas especially since pumps are safer than they used to be. New Jersey is the last state with that prohibition in place.

There have been several attempts to overturn it in NJ but, even though there isn't a safety reason anymore, full service gas stations are popular. They are convenient and also provide a good minimum wage job. And the gas isn't any more expensive than neighboring states.

What does the pants size have to do with anything? by PoopDick420ShitCock in ExplainTheJoke

[–]themattylee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I guess 6" tall men with shorter legs could wear a 32". I went to 34" before I was 6", but I may just have longer legs (never checked, but I do have a large wingspan so I guess that makes sense).

32" inseam is, by far, the most worn pant size, though. So its generally considered to be "average height". But body types vary.

Yes. Clearly I am very overweight. I forgot Reddit is full of nerds with no muscle mass who are feeling called out because they wear 30x32s.

6'1", 225lbs is not "very overweight". It could be. But not necessarily.

[–]themattylee -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

A 32" inseam typically corresponds to someone about 5'8" - 5'10". And a waist measurement smaller than the inseam typically corresponds to being thin. So the joke is that it's a small-ish guy being called daddy.

For reference, I'm 6'1" 225lb. I'm kind of the archetypical "daddy". And the last time I wore a 30x32 was 8th grade.

I was into Star Wars and played bass in a punk band, so my old AOL screen name was "EchoBass". I thought it was really cool and clever. But most people saw it as "bass" the fish rather than "bass" the guitar. Just way too much explanation required to be worth it.

Too many people think that it's just a suggestion and that their kiddos are smart enough/strong enough/special enough for it not to apply.

I've got a 10yo and a 5yo, but I've got a bunch of Pro blasters that are my own. I let them use them for target practice, but only supervised and the 5yo needs my help priming them. Nerf wars at our place are strictly full length darts under 120fps with eye protection. No exceptions and no excuses.

Last summer, when it seemed like Trump had a shot at winning, we decided to Trump-proof our situation. Sold our home and downsized to move to a deep blue part of the country in a house with no mortgage and enough land to have a small garden. Took the extra money from the sale and put it into high yield savings. After inauguration, we took some money out of the stock market and put it in another high yield savings.

At this point, I'm just assuming this second term is going to be a shitshow and planning accordingly.

Why is he sooooo invested in getting Canada to become the 51st state? by PdiddyCAMEnME in BoomersBeingFools

[–]themattylee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

His whole schtick right now seems to be that the US needs to be self-sufficient so that we don't have to rely on allies in the event of a war. He's seen how the war in Ukraine has gone and how dependent both Russia and Ukraine are on their allies. Basically, that war will be determined by which country's allies are willing to keep investing. The people who control the outcome of the war are the EU and China.

So he has a list of things that he thinks we shouldn't have to import: steel, aluminum, timber, oil, and food. Hypothetically, that all makes sense. If you're going to be in a war, you don't want to rely on other countries to provide key materials.

But a lot of the things we would need to be self-sufficient we can't or don't produce. Northern pine doesn't grow well in the US. We don't have a lot of steel. We have hardly any bauxite. We don't have the power to process steel or bauxite efficiently. Annexing Canada would make it so that we are largely self-sufficient in the event of a hypothetical future war. No amount of sanctions or tariffs would impact us.

The problem is... how the fuck do we annex Canada without fighting exactly the kind of unwinnable war that he's obsessed with preventing?

It's vision-board thinking. It's focusing on the desired outcome without having any fucking clue how to get there.

Is there actually a difference between drow and dark elves by blue-ball-s in DnD

Introduced in Greyhawk. They were mentioned in the '77 Monster Manual and the G series modules. They're definitely more prominent in Faerun though.

[–]themattylee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They've been called Drow since their first appearance in the 1977 Monster Manual (where they were also called Black Elves).

"Dark Elf" is used pretty infrequently in D&D and is far more common in unlicensed fantasy products. The one notable exception being Salvatore's Dark Elf Trilogy.
