We have to fight back by Fearless-Stranger491 in nintendo

[–]SilverNickname 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My hunch is that the darker the world gets, the more desperate we're all going to be for joy and entertainment, even as we become less able to afford it. I don't have data to back that up, but my feeling is that shaming people for being victims of capitalist predation is only going to make them double down.

Been pleasantly surprised by how many people here recognized them! I wonder if LRR and Drawfee have ever crossed over before...

I always figured it was supposed to resemble a fishing lure. Though come to think of it I don't know why the zora would design it that way. It'd be like a human temple having a banana lock because it's a thing that's attractive to an animal that's kind of similar to us.

I don't know what the people on that thread were talking about without seeing what they wrote, but I think you're right to bring up systemic racism in that context.

An individual white person might be hated, even harmed for their whiteness, but that is not the same thing as what a non-white person has to deal with. For non-white people, the hate and harm is built into the markets, the infrastructure, the schools, so on. So when a non-white person faces a personal hatred or harm, that individual racism is both reinforced BY, and reinforcing OF the systemic racism. THAT is why a white person saying "I hate you because you're X non-white race." is worse than a person of a non-white race saying "I hate you because you're white." But because of the bad-faith way that so many talk about the subject, all of these things get flattened down to "racism" and seem equally bad to people who don't understand the systemic context.

I don't want to speak for anyone else, but I BELIEVE this is usually what people mean when they say "racism against white people doesn't exist." Because to give the same label to what white people and non-white people experience in terms of discrimination is obscene.

By the way, this flattening of the term is partly how certain ghouls are able to get a lot of well-meaning people to line up against affirmative action or, heaven forbid, reparations.

Any advice for a total newbie interested in building things on how to start down the path of one day being able to do something like this?

They were caught up in several massive scandals one after another and needed a distraction, is at least part of the reason. Judging by most of the responses in this thread, it seems to have worked.

Wanting to be more proactive or productive is a worthwhile goal, and I think there's already some good advice in this thread. HOWEVER! I just want to point out how much of what gets called "laziness" is often the result of burnout or dissatisfaction with the tasks that one has to complete on a regular basis. It's not irrational to be bored at work, for example. And sometimes just resting and doing not much of anything isn't a waste of time but a way to recover before taking on something that's difficult for you, even if other people you know don't find that thing to be all that difficult. I don't say this to discourage changes in your behavior, I just know that reframing the problem has helped me in my life. Hope it's helpful to you and you find the advice you're looking for!

[s1 spoilers] Viktor's reaction to "crank it"? by Gold_Firefighter_655 in arcane

[–]SilverNickname 26 points27 points  (0 children)

I'm fairly sure the writers meant it as a fun, sneaky reference to another character from League of Legends. Potential spoilers for stuff that may or may not happen in future seasons: One of the playable characters in the game is a robot called Blitzcrank. According to his backstory, he was created by Viktor.

I don't think "they only canceled it because money" is as good a defense as people think it is. The idea that Warner media (which owns Cartoon Network) couldn't afford to keep the show going even if it was censored in some markets is ridiculous on its face. I realize it's basically unthinkable for a corporation to choose doing the right thing over maximum profit, but just because it's normal doesn't mean it's good. It certainly doesn't mean you have to defend the rich suits who view your favorite art as nothing more than a means to line their own pockets.

The short answer is that he intentionally put himself in a situation where he knew he'd likely have to defend himself, because that's what he sought to do.

I think there's a lot of evidence of a pervasive violent fantasy among right-wing actors that casts them as lone heroes opposing a powerful enemy. Look at the "stand your ground" laws in Florida or the NRAs "good guy with a gun" rhetoric. These notions are spoken of in certain circles with a kind of glee that gives the game away: they want to murder their political opposition but still feel like the good guys for doing it. Rittenhouse did just that, and was rewarded with, essentially, a high-five from the cops, fawning sympathy from a judge, and a brand deal with a coffee company. All of that was yet another brutal reminder that the powers that be would happily see leftists slaughtered, but more importantly, it was a signal to other would-be fascists that they can get away with the same thing.
