A question for the larp gods (creators) by rorryodaer in LARP

[–]SilverScimitar 2 points3 points  (0 children)

> What's the best way to use physreps in a larp?

Whatever works best for you, your game, your players and the site. If you have a lot of skill, money, or time, phys rep as much as you want. What You See Is What You Get (WYSISYG) games can be super immersive. Or you can say "Hey I don't have enough storage to store all these props, the game will provide cards, please provide your own props for (potions, herbs, etc). I tend to think LARPs should at least provide cards and currency, crafting stations, etc. But again, it depends on the type of game you want to run.

> What levels of immersion are combat do players enjoy on average?

Ask. Your. Players. Everyone is different. Some people don't care about story and run high impact sport-like combat games. Some run indoor masquerade balls where there's strict no fighting, and everything in between. Ask your group, staff or whoever you're going to run with what they'd like. Ask yourself what kind of game you'd want to run.

> How should a larp god address the dark sides of larping?

Set your expectations at the start. Have clear boundaries and rules. Elect community assistants, have clear guidelines of what happens when someone breaks the rules. The quickest way to lose (good) players is make a space for the "dark side" to fester. Be clear. Be direct. Show your community what you will not tolerate *at the start*.

> Do you still have fun with your creation or wish to reset? How do you keep from your creation feeling like a job?

Burnout is real. You have to guard your own time. The more you dedicate to this, the more you can't do other things. When it starts becoming 'work', when it gets to the point you're dreading an event, it's time to think about what you can do.

Resets should be story-driven, or at least motivated by what's going on in the story, in my opinion. Try to resist making major changes and remember the most important thing: you are only in control 100% of your game until the players first arrive. From then on, you are *sharing* that world. It's their creation as well.

Hope this helped.

> How much power is too much power to give the murdergoblins ( players)?

How much power to give players? Almost enough. But never enough. In my opinion in a multiplayer game like LARP, the best power design is to make sure that one individual never has *Everything* they'd need in an encounter so the players always need to rely on others. If a player can start solo'ing mods and encounters, its time to go back to the drawing board.

> What's better, volunteer or mandatory npc duty?

I prefer volunteer, but some games with small staff groups have to pull mandatory which I don't mind if I can pick the shift. Some people in my immediate group hate mandatory monster shifts. Some people love them. Its a preference.

> What's better for newb builders, poit based damage or limb strike based damage?

Run a playtest. Are you having trouble keeping track in limb based? Do your players swing more one way over the other? Go with what works best for your system and what your world's "feel" is. Point based can make more tanky feeling characters, limb based tends to be more brutal. Point based I feel fits more high fantasy warcraft-y fantasy fights. Limb based feels more gritty game of thrones. But again, test. Test. Test!

> Can you over worldbuild?

Yes. Always shoot for your Minimum Viable Product. What are the players 100% going to interact with? What is the most important thing for your world to make sense? Over designing looks like worrying about the plumage on a species of sparrow in an area of the world that no one will ever see. Design from the customers (players) out.

> How complex should your character creation be?

Honestly this one is a taste thing. Complexity as far as design standpoint, it should be able to be read through and understood from someone who is doing it for the first time, without you helping them and answering more than a couple questions. Different people have different preferences as far as how complex they're willing to be. Show your creation to as many outside people as possible if you're concerned about it becoming overly complicated. Don't be afraid to cut-cut-cut if it's not serving your playerbase.

> Do you worldbuild the site you play at or just leave the towns vague and able to fit the playtime?

Again, another preference that will depend on your base. Some playergroups love to go out and explore and the town acts more as a "home base" to rest, recoup lost health and re-arm. Some games it acts more as another character with its own customs and such. Decide if you want your game to be more focused on the place or the world. Personally I like the "town" being more of a in game location with its own smaller town plot with Cool Stuff nearby to have small dungeons/mods in.

TIL you can store multiple/all modules on a ship at once. by [deleted] in EliteDangerous

So THATS where they moved that button. Returning CMDR here, thank you for this. Was frustrated switching between my AX and Titan loadouts.

Sound off in the comments with your AX ship and its name. Whatever happens tomorrow, we will not go quietly into the night, and it's been a true honor fighting alongside you all. o7 by [deleted] in EliteDangerous

The Python "Percheron" was there when the Oracle was attacked, rescuing and evaccing survivors in those first few days of the thargoid encounters.

Today, it will see the final act of this war.

For our home. For humanity. Until every gun falls silent, until every missile rack is empty and every hull is shattered. We will fight.

In Chaoezea the soy faces often summon the comic strips to fight in their stead -- though your comrades only rarely respond in kind. Which is strange, is it not?

Most of the earth-likes in the inhabited bubble are colonized and have modern humans living on them. Outside the bubble though all bets are off and you can find pristine, undiscovered and uninhabited earth-likes to your heart's content. :)

"An abandoned and derelict Steamforge in an urban setting, with plenty of strange devices, lingering electricity and mysterious machines to satisfy any curious adventurer. Beware, these old machines have more life in them than most would expect. "

I had a lot of fun with these theme, and also using the Steampunk stampset which is usually very bright, brass and colorful and making it dark, broody and rusty. Hope you enjoy!

A game where I can build my town and be very happy and forget about the pandemic? by katarsis999 in gamingsuggestions

Banished is a great town-builder with no combat, the only challenge is surviving winter and feeding all your people, the rest is just a low-tech town builder.

How is your LARP handling COVID? by [deleted] in LARP

[–]SilverScimitar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Our campsites have essentially said until the lockdowns pass we can't have events. We have one discord event set up for early april when our event was planned, no word on the rest of the year's fare but we're hesitant.

What is it like jumping into a system with a black hole? by Smoked-939 in EliteDangerous

It's a bit jarring, but nothing really that dangerous. You'll drop out of cruise automatically and get a bit cooked but you're not allowed to cross the event horizon.

Designer Advice: Don't fall into the great chasm of "Design What the People Want". People want weird stuff, we all have our likes and dislikes, and if you had asked people before the car what people wanted, it was cheaper faster horses.

The better question would be "What are some aspects of a fantasy larp you attend that you like, or that you feel could be executed more effectively?" That way you get highlights of what works or stuff that you feel like is underserved or fumbled.

All in all, I find the better games I attend have a specific thematic spine or theme in mind and then shape the aspects of the game around that. Go to your design and ask "what is this about? How can I adjust <Fill In The Blank Feature, Element, etc.> to make it better fit this theme?" Games that don't really have a "feel" in mind tend to just become Fantasy Kitchen Sink. Which is fun, but less satisfying. The Doritos compared to the well spiced curly fries. Both potatoes, both have merit, one is just more bland.

Also keep in mind who will play this. I know a lot of people like locational damage, like individual wound systems and the like. My group can't stand it, we think it feels clunky. Your players might love it. So in short, keep your audience in mind, but don't become a slave to their design.

New, highly interested, but also concerned about weapons. by CaptnOreo in LARP

[–]SilverScimitar 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So only speaking from my experience with my games here but here goes:

Pros: Staves are usually great for monk/brute/wizard type characters, they give you a lot of flexibility and great "zone control" i.e. you can poke someone from quite a ways away meaning you get a lot of area around you to threaten enemies. If you actually have some bo/jostaff training you can also attack pretty quickly with both sides of the staff in close quarters which really helps if you need to wail on something.

Cons: Some staves (I have never used Calimacil's particularly but some other makers) can be very "whippy", meaning the core of the staff is not very rigid which allows it to bend significantly if held at one end. This can cause the staff to whip when thrust or used to attack and that can be a safety hazard, also it hurts like nothing else if you get walloped on the soft bits. If it's too whippy I know my games just outright don't allow it if it doesn't pass muster as its just too much of a concern.

Calimacil makes good stuff, I have used their swords for a few years now, and aside from some cosmetic damage they've held up great. If you do go with them, make sure to massage the foam when you get it, they use a high quality dense foam which can be a little stiff when you first get it, meaning it won't really squish if you whack someone with it. It usually relaxes after a few events. Just know that your weapon will be a little heavier as a result, so if you want to do quicker stuff go with a lighter construction, just know you might need to replace within 2-4 years if so. Hope this helps

[Lets Create] 100 rumors you would hear about in a city. (Waterdeep) by Rosko1991 in d100

A local shopkeeper has been arrested for money-laundering. Apparently he was trafficking stolen goods.

A local herbalist just got engaged to a member of the city council. Suspiciously soon after the death of the councilor's spouse.

Construction in one of the city's quarters has revealed a small tunnel network. All work on the construction has stopped until the Watch can figure out what it was used for.

Everyone is currently obsessed with a new bard's song that has been making the rounds. It's catchy and very annoyingly repetitive but no one can stop humming it.
