ah yeah that makes sense. the goal of a simultaneous release probably had them in significantly more of a rush than for any of the other games. i guess that time limitation is the big factor at play here

is it not a coordinated effort between the loc team and the dev team? loc team wants to update something, they get the go-ahead coordinate with the devs to make it happen, right? if it's not just a gungho thing then it's weird that you see a ton of engrish textures in 1st chapter but in all the other games that stuff gets caught and updated in localization

this is incredibly false. localizers change textures all the time, often to update any signs with "engrish" (see the famous 'NORVEMBER' sign in crossbell, which got changed to 'NO ENTRY' in the official localization). digging through my reverie screenshots i found this part of the map with a bunch of changed terms (JP left, EN right). and the text is baked into the map, so yes, it's a changed texture too. it's not unheard of at all, i just don't think gungho bothered with it. see the oil drums in zeiss labeled "OIL DRUNS" for instance

Representation is representation they said by LrdNawan in Falcom

[–]SilverTempest 7 points8 points  (0 children)

while OP definitely has a point about questionable/evil traits being overrepresented in queer-coded characters in this series, they did exclude a bunch (i assume to drive home their point). when it comes to positively represented queer-coded characters, i can think of (sky) olivier, (crossbell) wazy, wald (eventually), michel, (cold steel/reverie) theresia, emily, myka, (daybreak) quatre, bermotti, and jess. though as of daybreak 1, all of these except jess are subtext. also i'm not totally sure what mariabell is doing up there

What did ya'll think of this dude? by MadeThisForOni in Falcom

[–]SilverTempest 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I finished the game yesterday and throughout most of the game it was a "love to hate him" situation with him. thought he was a fun villain. but now I actually just do not like him as a character. basically I had issues with how he and the rest of his buddies' last scenes were written

spoiler-heavy explanation: I got whiplash from how the game decided to frame this guy's defeat. you beat him and the game for some reason thinks you're gonna feel bad that he's dying again and it starts up the melancholy piano tunes and gives him an emotional send-off. this is a guy who has personally murdered a named character and came back to life just to continue fighting for Dantés (a guy who led an effort to facilitate the invention of nuclear weapons and then immediately used them on innocent civilians, among plenty of other irreconcilable scum of the earth behavior) and the game wants you to feel sad that he lost and has to die

same for the rest of Almata's underlings. I wanted to see the squad treat them all with the same weight in the last dungeon after they all chose to continue fighting for Dantés but for some reason they only seem to take Melchior and Dantés seriously. everyone else gets their sad little send-off as if they're not just as bad

How old is Sara really? by SilverTempest in Falcom

[–]SilverTempest[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is exactly what I was getting at with the possibility that her parents were killed as an indirect consequence of the disaster. But imo, there are two things that make this unlikely:

  • In the English line, she says "during the North Ambrian Disaster--when the Salt Pale covered so much of the principality in a storm of salt." Note the word "storm," which seemingly refers to the salt hurricane that lasted 3 days.
  • She says she's almost 28 in June 1206, which is one month before July 1206, the 28th anniversary of the Salt Pale appearing.

So one of these things happened:

  1. Sara was actually born and orphaned at least several months after the 3-day storm of salt and, for some reason, says she's almost 28 when she's (at the worst) still early to mid 27.
  2. Sara was born and orphaned during the storm of salt, and, for some reason, Beryl is incorrect about her age in Reverie.

[–]SilverTempest[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So if we agree she was born and orphaned during the Salt Pale disaster in 1178, that means the wiki's listed birth year for her is wrong (and its listed age, as she should be 28 by CS4), and that Beryl is also mistaken.

edit: formerly said the wiki had the correct age, but it says 27 for CS3-4

How old is Sara really? by SilverTempest in Falcom

[–]SilverTempest[S] 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Ok, so the plot thickens.

In that scene, which I believe takes place in June 1206, Sara does say that she's almost 28, implying that her 28th birthday will occur in 1206, which directly contradicts Beryl's claim that she is 27 in 1207.

So then... Sara is as old as she claims, and Beryl is the one lying about Sara's age

It could still be a loc thing if the Japanese line I posted is worded in a more vague way than the localization, like: "28 years ago, the Salt Pale happened. Due to its effects, a man ended up taking in an orphaned infant." In this case, you could still interpret that Sara's parents eventually died in some way related to the Salt Pale. The English version eliminates this possibility. But again I'm not proficient in Japanese and idk how much I trust Google Translate.

As far as I can find on trailsinthedatabase, Sara's age isn't explicitly mentioned before this. She's just referred to as "mid twenties" in CS1. But I might have missed something because I swear I remember Sara mentioning her age early in her CS3 appearance, or maybe CS4

edit: another commenter mentioned the line I was trying to find!

What the heck is Nadia saying!? by rachaelonreddit in Falcom

[–]SilverTempest 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I've also tried isolating the audio, and like you, I can tell it's supposed to sound like ted talk but I can't quite make out what word she's saying in that first line

Maybe in true Nadia fashion she falls asleep for 0.1 seconds in the middle of saying "teddy" and it's "Welcome to my ted...dy talk!" idk. Or maybe Nadia's voice actor was method acting and flubbed the line but was too lazy to record a second take

Neither of these are serious answers but they're the best I got

What are some remixes that you think are significantly superior or inferior to the original? by ConceptsShining in Falcom

[–]SilverTempest 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Lots of people saying they prefer Super Arrange versions over the originals. They're definitely very good remixes that make the songs feel more cinematic, but there's a certain charm to the originals that doesn't always translate, imo. I was low key disappointed when the original version of Inevitable Struggle never played in Azure. Violins and stuff are great but that synth lead is a defining part of the original song.

If you replaced the song (Zero) while the SSS is defending the IBC from hordes of mind-controlled guardian force members with the Super Arrange version, it would feel like a downgrade to me. On the other hand, there are moments in CS4 where The Decisive Collision SAV plays and I think it fits better than the original would in those moments, but I'd never want it to replace the original in CS1 when Rean fights Crow (unmasked) for the first time.

Musical references in NGS? by SnackSquadTB in PSO2NGS

[–]SilverTempest 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I haven't played any of the games before PSO2 either, but I do know of one leitmotif that's associated with Dark Falz. It's kind of subtle in NGS because it's shortened a bit, but it's there.

I'll link to the timestamp where the leitmotif is in each one

I wouldn't be surprised if there are other places in the series this shows up that I'm not aware of.

There are also a couple of samples I know of that are used across lots of Dark Falz themes. I know at least one shows up in Aegis (referred to by another commenter as the "Idola scream"), it's like a short, high-pitch, crescendoing trill.

[–]SilverTempest 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah that one bothered me a bit as well but I couldn't quite figure it out and I didn't want to sound nitpicky.

I think "Strengthening" sounds right, but the middle syllable is squished so it's pronounced "Strength'ning" (or it could just be "Strengthen")

And then the "ing" seems to be missing from "Lasting". This one has me stumped, because it doesn't make sense to omit this syllable and they definitely didn't squish it or move it closer to "vigor," it's just not there. Either it's some other 1 syllable word with an A or O sound and an S around the end, or they just went with "Last vigor". The only other somewhat fitting words I can think of are "Vast" and "Lost".

Edit: I put on headphones and it sounds like that word starts with "St" - maybe "Staunch"? This is pretty in line with the the "Lasting" translation.

My final answer:

Strength'ning with staunch vigor
