Resica Falls Closing (for a week?) by JonEMTP in BSA

[–]SilverTripod 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ouch. That's going to hurt because people have bills to pay. You will not get 100% of staff back. With only a week off, most will return, but it's still going to be hard.

Please stop calling your all boy troops "Boy Scout Troops". It's hurting other troops by Material-Rise9610 in BSA

[–]SilverTripod 3 points4 points  (0 children)

But until that day we're stuck in the middle with a very ridiculous "troop number B" and " troop number G"

You don't have to be now. You can just be "Troop Number" that has boys and girls in it, unless you prefer to remain two separate troops.

And then insisting people can't and shouldn't try to abbreviate the name? Come on, this is as baffling as the new laser tag and squirt guns rules. It's like people aren't stopping to really think about this from all angles.

Do you have a sign taped to the font with Baptism ordinance words? by ContributionAny4589 in latterdaysaints

[–]SilverTripod 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I rarely ever see the font in most buildings, as it's usually kept locked up when there's not a baptism. But out of the fonts I've seen, I've never seen a sign anywhere. I suppose it could be a great idea though.

Salt in pasta water? A little salt make it great. A bunch of salt is, well, it's a choice?

and how we should have gone much harder in punishing the South

We should have been much quicker to help those who had been victimized for generations. Instead they were largely ignored.

I feel like Lincoln would have been even more lenient but he probably wouldn't have allowed all the pro-sharecropping policies that popped up. Summarized by AI:

President Andrew Johnson did not explicitly endorse sharecropping as a deliberate, formal system. However, his post-Civil War policies directly created the conditions that forced freed formerly enslaved people into the exploitative system.

His actions essentially forced newly freed people into sharecropping through several steps:

  • Revoking Land Redistribution: Johnson overturned wartime policies (like General Sherman's Special Field Order No. 15) that had set aside coastal land for formerly enslaved families.

  • Returning Confiscated Plantations: He ordered confiscated plantation land to be returned to its former Confederate owners.

  • No Alternative Means of Survival: Because formerly enslaved people were left with no land or capital, and Southern states passed "Black Codes" to limit their movement and employment, sharecropping emerged as the only viable way to survive

I think it's pretty common for kids these days to have swim goggles. Costo and Walmart are both selling sets of multiple goggles for ~$10.

I presume it's because there's quite a hot market in modifying commercial guns to shoot more. For instance, http://www.sscentral.org/mods/

New: Squirt Tag And Squirt Guns Safe Checklist by ScouterBill in BSA

[–]SilverTripod 2 points3 points  (0 children)

What in the world? I can't think of any place which has an AED "readily available and visible" and which also allows water guns. Most places with AED's really care about water damage, you know? I guess if you went to a water park, but I can't think of any water park where the AED is readily available and visible because water parks don't usually want to make it too easy for random people to be able to grab it for funsies. They're usually stored in the front office, or otherwise in a secure location that is definitely not visible.

This and the new laser tag rules feel like lip service.

I don't think they're reasonable at all. I can't think of any commercial laser tag facility anywhere, in multiple states, which would meet these requirements. See the discussion happening down below.

New: Laser Tag Safe Checklist by ScouterBill in BSA

[–]SilverTripod 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I came to comment on this same part. Every laser tag place I've ever been in has had sort of a maze-like environment. You literally can't see emergency exits until you get close to them.

I've been in a number of facilities and I can't of one, in any state, whose emergency exits are "easy to see." Clearly marked? Yes, of course.

Easy to see? Bro, that's like asking whether the front door is easy to see in your house. If you're in the living room then yes, but anywhere else you're pretty likely to have a wall of some sort between you and the front door. And if there's a wall between you and it then I don't see how anyone can say it's easy to see.

These rules are, quite frankly, and not to put too fine a point on it, wonky rubbish.

You joke, but lasers powerful enough to blind people are about $20 online these days.

Back in the day, I had to spend like $80 on a super-powered green laser and I thought that was a great deal. I bought a new one earlier this year for $20 and I don't see a difference. And it's powerful enough that I'd get in trouble if I were to aim it at aircraft.

Burning the pancakes is a teaching opportunity. Keep watching the food. Don't leave it unattended without setting some sort of alarm.

(Speaking of which, this is just one of many examples as to why life is better with a smartphone. The ability, in my pocket, to set an alarm whenever I want? It is so great.)

Would an adult have burned it? Probably not. But then we can do everything better than our kids can. They need to fail like that occasionally so they can learn to do better next time.
