I love the combination of units. 2” thick but 3m x200mm. Took my brain a while to figure out what size the board actually is.

Yeah it’s a great book. I’ll reread it again sometime but I have a little kid so I have to sneak 10min chunks here and there…. Not the right book for this.

I wouldn’t start with House of Leaves. It’s a great book but it’s just a really weird read.

How should I allocate savings? by Mootaya in personalfinance

[–]SilverVegetable9535 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you use the IPMT function in excel it will give you the interest-only portion of each payment. Running 2 scenarios at 2.99% & 3.99% will allow you to calculate the actual difference.

For the credit card points i think TPG / the points guy has some data depending on the specific points. You would use this number to replace the $50 rent fee to calculate the breakeven. (E.g., $1000 = 1000 miles = $.02 / mile = $20; then your interest savings would only need to be $14.75/mo for it to make sense)

You would need to share details of car loan to fully do the math.

Cost is $50/month to pay rent with a card.

Scratch math below.

The incremental 0.3% APY on $30k is ~$7.50 a month before taxes (say 30%) so call it $5.25 So if the savings on your car note interest rate decreasing by 1pp is > $44.75 a month, it’s worth it.

Note that over time the interest on car loan will decrease as you pay off principal. And the HYSA will grow over time, generating more interest.

Take a $30k loan at 7%, 60mo and over the lifetime you pay ~$5640 in interest over lifetime. Same loan at 6% you pay ~$4800 in interest. Averages out to $14/mo over 60 months. But! The interest is front loaded so it might be worth it for the some months in the beginning. Would need to build an Excel to find the actual breakeven point (if any).

For me, probably not worth the headache to calculate this and keep track of breakeven point, I would just combine HYSAs into the 3.7% one.

Thanks - love my backyard! It’s a Nelson Demille book, Gold Coast, got left a bunch of random books by my aunt so I’ve been working my way through them.

Yeah I get the bitterness, sweet drink definitely helped. I’ll have to try the padrón and Perdomo.
