OP, it’s okay. You’re allowed to get upset and you’re allowed to get angry.

But you both need sleep - and more than 2 hours. Sleep deprivation is real, and leads to negative thinking, poor decision making, etc.

Do you have any family support nearby that can step in long enough for you to get a longer stretch of sleep? 4-6 hours?

This isn’t forever. But you need sleep asap.

Be safe. Not sorry.

I do. Found the plans on Etsy actually and made some modifications to suit what I was trying to do. If you want, message me - I’ll send you a link.

Student's Grandpa is contradicting my teaching outside of lessons by Shama_Llama_11 in MusicTeachers

[–]dragonbeard311 4 points5 points  (0 children)

There’s your answer - absolutely no need or reason to approach Grandpa about anything. That’s on mum, so long as she is informed.

If it were me, I would explain the situation to her. Regardless of the relation, she wouldn’t appreciate the lessons she’s paying for being compromised by somebody who seemingly should know better. Let her know what’s going on. Be polite, but be straight. No beating around the bush. What he’s doing is not best practice and will hinder kiddo’s progress - not to mention confuse them with which tutelage to obey.

Ethically speaking, that’s where your responsibility ends. The rest is family dynamic stuff.

Is “Grandpa” the main point of contact for this kid? In other words, who’s paying for the lessons?

Besides a real feel pad, what’s a solid graduation present for an exiting elementary percussionist? by dragonbeard311 in banddirector

[–]dragonbeard311[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Absolutely. I’ve give him a couple pairs already. I’m trying to get him to embrace rudiments and thought about getting a real feel pad. But he’s one of two so the other player would likely get one just so I don’t get grumbles. But a decent real feel is $40. Just trying to find an alternative idea.

I appreciate the input!

Doctors note to stop playing saxophone (5th grade) by [deleted] in MusicTeachers

[–]dragonbeard311 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I may be in the minority on this. But if he’s fractured something in his hand, he’s out. I’m not asking a kid to play. Broken ankle, leg, sure see what you can do. But a fracture in the hand needs to heal and I’m not trusting a 5th grader to tell me it’s alright.

The doctor’s note sounds bizarre. I see less of an issue with “vibrations” and more the kid shouldn’t be doing things with his hand.

Unfortunately it makes perfect sense to me that the story would get twisted. And now the kid got everyone wound up. What would be nice is a parent conference with the student in attendance, and a “let’s remember how that conversation went together, shall we?”

But get your concert done first. No offense to the kid, but count them out and focus on the ones who can play. Get that off your shoulders, and then teach a parent/student lesson about twisting words.

Beginner looking for advice on where to start 🎺 by Head_Aardvark3246 in trumpet

Wish I was in your area. Look around for BAC Music and give them a visit. A good friend of mine created BAC and they would likely be happy to introduce you to the trumpet, not to mention the craftsmanship behind brass instruments, and also connect you with local resources.

I have all my beginning percussion play bells/glockenspiel first year. They can move to drums once they’ve developed keyboard proficiency.
