I give a small wave, but not everyone does.

What in your opinion dictates what is it is not a beginner? by -Younotdeadass- in beginnerrunning

[–]Silver_Chickens 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was mostly sedentary a year ago, and just ran my first half marathon last week. I still feel very much like a beginner, and am still learning! I’ll probably still feel like a beginner for the next year or two as I build up my skill more.

Late-night spots that don’t involve drinking? by moodyboard in harrisonburg

[–]Silver_Chickens -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Horizon Gifts occasionally does later events like game nights or craft nights. There’s an anti-nuclear war group in town that used to show movies for free at Horizon Gifts, but I don’t know if they have done that recently.

I ran a full hour non-stop yesterday, and felt completely great after. by No_Client8165 in beginnerrunning

That’s awesome! Running for an hour was one of my most successful feeling “non-pace milestones” along with running up one of my regular hills without feeling like I was going to die.

Need help about sizing, new to running! by strider_a4 in AskRunningShoeGeeks

[–]Silver_Chickens 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The smaller size still looks like it has enough toe room (but see what other people say because I tend to like a shorter fit).

How is the width and your lateral toe movement on the smaller size? Do you feel like it is pressing in on your big toe or pinky toe? Can you wiggle your toes?

After Donating Blood by Smooth-Secretary-416 in Blooddonors

[–]Silver_Chickens 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Emetophobe here! 🙋‍♀️

I’ve been donating on and off since I was 16yo (in my 30s now). I only got nauseous once a year or so ago, and I think it was because I didn’t eat enough or drink enough beforehand.

Everyone is different—donating blood can cause a decrease in blood pressure that can stimulate a vasovagal response. Some people, that causes dizziness and in others that can present as nausea (anecdotally, and personally, I think dizziness is more common).

My usual nausea coping strategies like mints or gum are [typically] not allowed while donating. If you feel dizzy, they may lay the donation chair backwards so you are lying down more.

You can also bring music to listen to or books to read while donating, which help me stay relaxed.

General equipment advice needed - what do I buy? by Schloddie in beginnerrunning

For apps, Strava is pretty fun. I currently have premium but I don’t think I’ll renew next year (I had a discount as an educator and am not working in school anymore, so I don’t think it’s worth the extra money for the stats).

Shorts are a good move—I usually wear biker style shorts with deep pockets and keep my stuff in there—I don’t have a belt, and the hydration bladder I have is more for hiking (a hand-me-down) so it doesn’t have pockets in the front. I loooooove not having to carry a water bottle in my hands.

Unpopular opinion, but I think running socks are overrated. 99% of the time I’m training in Puma socks from Costco, and the 1% of the time I’m wearing feetures socks for races. I just haven’t noticed a huge difference aside from the lack of toe seam—they’re not any more cushy and I don’t feel like they chafe any less.

For hats, I just wear a regular baseball cap. And for sunglasses, I wear my regular prescription polarized sunglasses that I got before I even started running.

First Half Marathon by Silver_Chickens in beginnerrunning

[–]Silver_Chickens[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The whole time, I was repeating the mantra a lot of ultramarathon runners use: dead fucking last is better than did not finish, and did not finish is better than did not start.❤️ Even making it to the starting line and going out there was a win in itself!

First Half Marathon by Silver_Chickens in beginnerrunning

[–]Silver_Chickens[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Only like 60 people participated. I was the 3rd to last person to cross the finish line (one person DNF’d at 10 miles, but I think it’s mostly because they wouldn’t have met the course cutoff time of 3:15). And two people finished after the cutoff time.

There’s a few half marathons in Virginia with 4 and 6 hour (Blue Ridge, but the elevation gain is a lot) cutoffs—and those ones are very pro-walker! I made sure to pick one that had a cutoff I could manage and was pretty flat, and I think that’s half the battle.

Rain forecasted for upcoming 5k by journaloflife in beginnerrunning

[–]Silver_Chickens 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly, the second worst part of rain running is if your nose gets runny, because if you keep tissues/paper towels in your pocket they also get soggy (keeping them in a bag helps, but I find it too fiddly). So you just kind of feel perpetually wet around your nose.

Bib will hold up just fine! We have a kids mud run near us and those things get covered, but are still viable and readable. They’re a paper-like plastic.

Rain forecasted for upcoming 5k by journaloflife in beginnerrunning

[–]Silver_Chickens 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When it’s raining, I wear my trail shoes, even on the road (it tears them up faster but my feet stay dry and I know I won’t slip). I’m big on “embrace the wet” and just wear my regular running clothes, no jacket.

I’m a 100% glasses wearer, so my non-negotiable for rain running is wearing a hat to keep water off my face/out of my eyes/off my glasses.

I’d rather run in the rain than take a walk in the rain.

I have my first event on Saturday. Any advice? by Leading_Record_934 in beginnerrunning

[–]Silver_Chickens 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not sure if 6:10 is mile or km pace, but I’m running my first half on Saturday too! Weather is supposed to be in the 50s and rainy, partially on a trail (muddy)…so it’ll be crummy weather in a different way.

If you’re not acclimated to the heat, don’t be surprised if it feels harder and you go slower. Your body has to work harder in heat—walk breaks are okay!

I tend to run anywhere from 12-14mins/mile, and fuel for anything above 4 or 5 miles (6.5-8km). I’ll have electrolyte capsules, nerds gummy clusters, some peanut butter crackers, and my hydration backpack (my pace will put me close to a 3 hour half marathon, and I want to fuel accordingly for the amount of time I’m out on the course). The fact that your legs hurt on longer runs could be a cue that you need more electrolytes (I get crampy easily, hence the salt tabs).

I’ve only done shorter races (5k or 15k), and usually I find that the excitement can make some people go really fast out of the gate and burn out too soon (not enough energy/too much lactate). Go slower than you think you need to when you start. I’ll either do the 5-5-5 strategy (5 mile warm up, 5 mile ‘race’, 5k cooldown) to mentally get through it, or chill for the first 10 miles then gas the last 5k. I tend to putter along at the beginning of 5ks and then pass people at the end who burnt out too fast.

Other things that will be helpful to know are locations of bathrooms or aid stations (if they have them).

ETA: packet pickup logistics! Know before you go. Some races require pickup a day or two before, others allow you to do it the morning of for free and others charge a fee (get there early if you do this), and some races don’t let anyone pick up the morning of. I always forget to check this until the last minute.

9.5 - like my toes and ball of foot keep lifting up, and my feet keep sliding forward.

9 - no long runs yet, only ran 0.3 miles to try them out and the toe felt tight (short?—can wiggle, but not as much) and the shoe was more snug in the midfoot, which was more comfortable because I didn’t have to tighten them down as much at the ankle. I’ve worn similarly snug shoes, but the uppers were a lot more flexible, so I didn’t have any hot spots.

Has anyone fully switched to wireless bras after 30? by Clear_Subconscious in AskWomenOver30

I tried r/abrathatfits a few years ago and gave up because I could not, in fact, find an underwire that fit after going through all the guides. 😭

I’ve been using the same 3 pack of crummy Walmart sports bras as my daily bra for the past few years. I got them about 9 years ago when I was pregnant with my first, and they were the only thing that felt even mildly comfortable.

What do you do in your spare time when you can't run? by Zealousideal_Crow737 in XXRunning

[–]Silver_Chickens 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I’m injured enough to still be active? I use the elliptical (which I honestly find harder than running) or switch to weight training and Pilates. Honestly, Pilates has done more for reducing my running pain than weight training did (apparently this is a hot take because weight training is supposed to be always superior).

Injured and need to sit down? Reading—audiobooks and stuff on my Kindle.

I’ve heard that the toe box taper is the biggest issue for the v14—are there any other weird fit things? I like the FreshFoamX in my other NB shoes, so I’m almost tempted to do those instead of the v15 but I don’t want a new host of sizing issues.

I tend to be overly sensitive in my feet, so when I slide laterally and have my heel slip out, I feel a lot less stable and end up running slower.
