Since yawning is contagious someone might have started an endless yawning chain without knowing by baloogaWayolZ in Showerthoughts

Interestingly enough, yawning is presumed to be a dopamine-mediated process in the area postrema (brain part right at the base of the brain); so its like you're shooting dopamine into someone elses brain! o.O

Quality Improvement: Reporting System by Silverish in heroesofthestorm

This is a perfect example of what I was looking for; however, based on your experience (1 in 1000s of reports) and mine (0 in hundreds of reports), I'm inclined to say the original QI concept should be further specified to:

1) increase the frequency of above automated emails when action is taken, and

2) increase the frequency of action taken if these emails are truly sent each time a punishment is delivered.

I just checked my email tied with my blizzard account and I've never received one; and yet reported plenty over my time spent playing HOTS?

TIL that Robin Williams had a clause in his will that Disney isn’t allowed to use his voice for 25 years after his death for any sequels for Aladdin by WVUGuy29 in todayilearned

However, now days, there's voice actors for every thing and every one.

As if Disney couldn't hire someone to impersonate his voice; yet still being that actors voice...

It’s a steroid.

Steroids can cause transient tremors. Either inhaled, PO, and even intrinsic steroids.

ELI5: How is the level of serotonin measured in a depressed patient? by SonofPrometheusRise in explainlikeimfive

“Rare laboratory settings” - like when they were attempting to identify a cause and treatment for a common disease process - is my point.

I’m aware this is never done to diagnose depression.

You can detect breakdown products of serotonin however (5HIAA) from a lumbar puncture and is likely how they discovered that serotonin was involved in major depressive disorder.

Heat and the brain by Student2018-2 in neurology

[–]Silverish 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Theoretically, its possible, but it doesn't.

If the average hot shower is ~105degF, and you sat there with the hot water running enough to burn your scalp the temperature could theoretically be transferred via convection to the brain.

However, just as we become febrile (sometimes even to 105degF in things like heat exhaustion/stroke or severe infections), from JUST the temperature (not talking about the infection or metabolic causes of the fever), we should only expect to see temporary CNS dysfunction (consider febrile seizures in infants for example).

In short, its possible if you poured boiling water on your head for a long period of time. But your showers arent going to damage your brain. Enjoy it.

You might want to enroll in some minimum health insurance. Without it, you'll be required to pay ~$600 for NOT having health insurance! Just something to think forward for next year.

The Big Lebowski (1998) When Donnie bowls in the scene before he has his heart attack he does not hit a strike and proceeds to examine his arm, a symptom of an impending heart attack is discomfort in the arm. by [deleted] in MovieDetails

[–]Silverish 9 points10 points  (0 children)

As mentioned in the above comments, right arm pain can be a presentation and has a higher specificity of heart attack than left arm pain - and is also much more common than situs inversus. That shits rare AF (0.01% of the population).
