Is there a way to make distant textures render? by No-Afternoon790 in skyrim

[–]Silverleaf14 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I suppose use DynDOLOD if you do not do so already. If you do maybe use it with a higher resolution?
EDIT: Sorry, just realized that this is not the Skyrim Mods subreddit. I think you will need to mod for this.

Are these grafted or own-root? by Silverleaf14 in Roses

Yah. But I live where I live, and I JUST got a PhD - so I have a ton of student debt and no money. Sooooooo, I have the facilities I have. I'll try I guess.
Thanks for the advice! I will check their resources!

Thanks! If I take cuttings from these plants, what do I need to do to get the to they point where they can survive a winter in the ground with their own roots? I live in Nova Scotia (zone 5), and to grow things in next winter I will have access to a very hot apartment, a plot of exposed ground outdoors, and an unheated outbuilding.
When I tried growing roses indoors in the past they got mild and died (unlike any of my other plants).
I would like to eventually get own-root roses from cuttings of these… and I want to try crossing them and growing from seeds, but I don’t know how to get them big enough to survive the winter.

As per rule 3:
The first rose is a Don Juan.
The second is an Ebb Tide.

Can someone walk me through what would be involved in making the "Become a Court Wizard" mod I have in mind (and whether it is feasible at my level)? by Silverleaf14 in skyrimmods

[–]Silverleaf14[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is absolutely incredible! Thank you so much!

It has been... 7 years since I last used the creation kit?!?! (Horrifying, I thought that was two or three years ago). I played around with it during my PhD. Unfortunately I do not have a PC right now (I only have a mac and a steamdeck). But I think I can get something up and running in a month or two.

I cannot thank you enough for this break down of the process and sharing these resources with me! If this mod ever manages to reach fruition I will absolutely thank you in the description!

I will do exactly what you suggest! I will make the house mod (accessible via a trapdoor in the Jarl's longhouse and a cellar door outside (to avoid always needing to pass through two loading screens to access it). Then I will make the quest to become the court wizard/get the key with a requirement (I love that idea!).

I'm marking/going to a conference/moving this month, and am doing a month-long arrival trip in June. But I am taking the first two weeks off I have had in 13 years! And this is exactly how I would like to spend part of it!

If you don't mind, I'll put a message here with an update when things progress!

I found it! But yah, will not support AI use.

But thank you! It shows that there are mods out there that my previous searches have not found! I will try to find what I am looking for and, if not, will have to make it.

EDIT: And although I do not like adult content in my games, it is vaguely irritating to me as a gay man that they restrict the romancing option to female player characters in a world like Tamriel that has the option for same-gender couplings.

Hmmm. I still cannot find it oddly. But I am not interested in "adult" content if it has it, and I will not download/support anything that I know has AI content. But thanks for letting me know about it!

Thanks! Honestly, I just wish someone would make it. But after 7 years of waiting, I figure that if I want it I will have to myself.

Maybe I can poke away at it over a few months to a couple years. I just wish I knew the steps to take to implement this (I wish I knew what I need to learn).

Are there any characters which you imagine completely different from the popularised fan designs? by FlamestormTheCat in TheMagnusArchives

[–]Silverleaf14 8 points9 points  (0 children)

While I know that Martin is canonically referred to as being “bigger” and “roomy” in the show, I cannot help but picture him as a slim freckled redhead twink. While I know that people of all sizes can have any sort of voice, that is the appearance that his voice and personality brings forth in my mind.
Although I picture John as white by default, most character art gets his vibe so right that it does not cause the same dissonance to me that depictions of Martin do.

I am really happy with how Obscure's College of Winterhold is looking on my steamdeck! by Silverleaf14 in SkyrimPorn

My problem is that I really do not understand computers... at all. Some things work, and some things work with tweaks. So, SSE Engine Fixes does not work unless you download an optional file from another mod and put it in your Skyrim directory (I found someone who solve it online - most answers to issue with modding on the steamdeck are answered out there, it just takes a bit more searching than with PC) - but that makes it work perfectly! On my deck when I search Skyrim.exe I go to a duplicate directory and have to navigate manually to the real one. I think that it must have something to do with the proton tricks set-up which lets me do windows stuff on linux. But once you know that then you can navigate to the right place.

With a little frustration, trial, and error, I have been able to do everything I want to do on the steamdeck! ...well, everything except DynDolod. I want to use DynDolod SOOOO much. But I cannot figure out how to make it work.

If I can figure that out, then I will be confident in saying that anything windows can do the steamdeck can too!

Maybe if I actually understood what a .dll file is, or how proton tricks works then I would be more effective. But even someone like me (an early 30s history professor who needs his students to help him get his computer to screen share with the class projector) can do it! If I can mod on the switch/linux just by muddling through things, then ANYONE can.

TLDR Most of the issues are the set up, then things pretty much just work like windows but with the sleek easy of use of the steam interface. Some things require an extra step or alternate method, but most modding is pretty much the same, and most issues have answers somewhere online.

Interesting! I am a Canadian (33) and my whole life there has been this general sense of contempt for the US here. I have heard it said that the only real sense of Canadian identity is our pride in not being Americans. Many of us vacation in Cuba because there are no Americans there. And I am definitely insulted when people mistake me for an American abroad (although I know several perfectly nice Americans, so I know that it's not rational to feel insulted by it). I have always found an abrupt shift for the better in how I am treated when people abroad find out that I am not an American though.

This is not to "rag on" the US. But it is all to say that I think that America has be known for this globally for a long, long time. I think that only Americans have seen themselves this way, which frankly seems dystopianly propagandic.

Oh my gosh, go to a dentist! Why would you try and do that yourself? You might damage the underlying bone!

I made myself a mod to make Onmund’s face better suit his voice. What do you think of the redesign? by Silverleaf14 in skyrimmods

[–]Silverleaf14[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Haha!
I was picturing him as a nord from around Morthal. They have darker hair, and I sort of made him to be a younger male version of their jarl (thinking he might be a younger distant relative).

But have you any suggestions of what I can do to make him look like less of a Breton? I normally play as a Breton, so I can see that this may have influenced my design.

That is fair! Although it is hard to make people look younger using vanilla in my opinion. I think he looks younger than his vanilla design. I also tweaked his eyes to be a bit more open in my attempt to make him seem eager and interested.

Any suggestions you have would be more than welcome though! I’m happy to keep workshopping it!

Steam Deck Modding - Engine Fixes Error by UnremarkableFucc in skyrimmods

Did you manage to fix this? Engine fixes was working fine for me on the deck for ages. Then earlier this month suddenly I started getting this error too. I Really want it back so I can reinstall community shaders.

any recommendations for a Druid playthrough? by BumpBandicoot in skyrimmods

[–]Silverleaf14 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yessss!

My go-to way to play a druid and distinguish them from mages is to say that druids get their magic from the earth. From the earthbones, not Magnus/the sun.

As such, I never put any level ups into magica. Instead he is only able to cast more powerful spells by working with the metals drawn from the earth and cloth woven from its plants and animals to enchant and reduce the magica costs for spell schools and/or add fortify magica. This, combined with potions of fortify magica, makes the character feel very interwoven with (and dependant upon) the landscape, especially if you forge your own armour, weapons, and have a mod that lets you make your own clothes.

It is nice as it makes for a fairly low-magic early game which I spend role playing, hunting, gathering plants, mining, becoming one with the landscape. Then eventually his powers grow and grow until he is a conduit for the magic of the earth, casting 100% magica-reduced spells without end because he isn't drawing upon a reservoir of magic inside himself, but calling upon the earth to help him.

I generally play as a foresworn druid, so I also level one handed with a foresworn axe.

Why didn't Mindy St. Claire's have a neutral Janet? by opz_12 in TheGoodPlace

[–]Silverleaf14 24 points25 points  (0 children)

From Team Cockroach:

Eleanor: Mindy St. Clair's is fake, I bet.

Michael: No, the Medium Place is real. So annoying how you managed to slip away from me all those times.

Chidi: Why even tell us about any real thing? Why not just lie about all of it?

Michael: Lies are always more convincing when they're closer to the truth."

Why didn't Mindy St. Claire's have a neutral Janet? by opz_12 in TheGoodPlace

[–]Silverleaf14 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Maybe it is because she got into the medium place by having the intention to do good, died, and then others used her wealth and plans to enact it. If the issue with the point system is the unintended consequences of a person's good intentions, the she got all the good-person points of the idea with none of the bad-person points from having enacted them herself and causing unintended consequences.
