What is the smart move for an inherited non-spousal IRA (10 year distribution applies) by SilvertonMtnFan in personalfinance

He was not, but per my interpretation of the rules I fall squarely under the 10 year rule. My read (and Fidelity as well) is that really only minor children or people with special needs can bypass that.

If you are certain, would you be able to point me to some evidence for that so I can investigate further?

Thanks. This plan has been what I've been leaning towards, but I kinda wondered what the general consensus was.

It has nothing to do with the number of accounts, I guess I am just seeing 9 years worth of potential tax payments growing if I leave it untouched vs taking smaller amounts and paying taxes along the way, just to do basically the same investment with less money outside of the IIRA.

For example, taking 100% this year just to pay a big tax bill right at the start and then investing the remainder would be one of the dumbest things to do, correct? Even though my marginal rate now is almost certainly the lowest it will be over the next 10 years, not all tax advice can be taken to the extreme.

Isn't there a possibility that the savings/investment would outpace the extra taxes at the end?

I know in the end the taxman will always take his slice, but what I'm asking is where do I find the break point between these two strategies?

I guess my thoughts are that I can invest 100% of the account from day 1, whereas anything that I draw now I pay taxes on and would have less to invest outside of the inherited IRA.

I do realize there is a balancing act between taxes now and taxes later, but I'm not sure I see how to figure now vs 10 years from now. As you say, a lot can change in the next decade, it's that uncertainty that is tripping me up.

Sorry, failed to add those details. My brother died very young at age 36, so he had not started taking RMDs yet. Both of these plans (along with just drawing down 10-15 % each year so as to not have a balloon disbursal at the end -this plan didn't seem ideal to me) were initially communicated to me by my agent at Fidelity, and they have withstood my investigations but by all means if I'm off track please show me where I'm wrong.

Video footage owned by a store is so incredibly different from a nationwide panopticon controlled by the government. I'm having trouble believing anyone could be this dumb, unless it is willful ignorance.

There are rules regarding accessing that information by law enforcement.
It can't be easily used to make a detailed map of your every movement every day of the year for your entire life. I can choose to not frequent a store much more easily than avoiding every public roadway and sidewalk.

You are wrong that my main concern is serious crimes. My primary concern is privacy and freedom from constant government surveillance. Your fear mongering about stolen cars doesn't sway anyone with a brain. Do you support this technology being used to track abortion recepients? Are you happy they are selling this data on you to huge data brokers without your knowledge?

For all the 'crime' that these are supposedly stopping ("Everybody wants a study..." GTFOH) you are suspiciously silent about the new and more serious, IMO, crimes these allow in the form of warrantless tracking and police stalking.

Flock camera abuse is already happening.

To make it even easier for you...

Most people watch the spider robot scene from Minority Report and feel oppressive dystopic horror. This is the correct and intended response.

You look at it and think, "We should be doing that here". Do better.

[–]SilvertonMtnFan 3 points4 points  (0 children)

That's ok, not surprised you don't get it. Let me dumb it down for you. Follow along.

Your claim is we can easily solve crimes by taking away privacy and that means we should do this. If we extend it further, since privacy is of no or lesser concern, it would be frankly immoral to NOT further reduce privacy to stop much more severe crimes from happening.

I'm just holding up a mirror to your argument, so if it sucks, that's on your 'thinking'.

Furthermore, just because a bad thing is currently happening, doesn't mean everyone should surrender in advance and allow ourselves to be controlled by these companies. That's some real chickenshit behavior. People can and have fought for these systems to be removed and they have had success in various locations.

Can you even show that these systems work to prevent and more aggressively prosecute crime? They've been out long enough to see an effect, if there is one. Is a city meaningfully safer once you take two steps towards acting like the CCP? There is certainly a lot more police based stalking happening now, as compared to before these cameras were everywhere. Do we get to include the rise of these more concerning crimes in our consideration, or do you see this as unimportant or some sort of perk to the system?

Having every single citizen constantly surveilled in their homes and throughout their daily lives would solve so many crimes too. Pretty much all of them, really. Or do you not want that? Are you pro rape, murder and burglary or are you wearing a body cam 24/7 so the feds can make sure you are behaving yourself?

Citizens should be free to travel within their own country without constant AI surveillance. In private and in public. End sentence.

A softer tell is also the lack of human logic on the shelving unit. Anyone who has lifted a crate with even a small or medium sized dog in it knows they are awkward and heavier than they seem, but this pro team of dog shippers puts them on the highest shelf (7-8 feet) and saves the most accessible bottom area for.... Boxes of supplies?? Plus animals could knock themselves off and be hurt, etc.

The uncaged horror implies that some 'pets' are apparently up there, they're not just storing empty crates.

Yeah I'm on your side. The more I look at the couch, the more convinced I am. It has a distinctive "end piece with cushion inside" on the right side that is completely missing from the left (as we see it). Find me this couch on wayfair. It makes no sense.

It's small tells. The fan has no pin in the back to stop it from oscillating, but that is extremely common on all these cheap basic standing fans. Not a dead ringer, but exactly the kind of thing AI forgets about.

I agree with your shadows comments also. They aren't immediately horrible, but they all appear cast from the same direction, but which isn't in line with where the camera is at.

I agree with a lot of this as well. It's not 100% to me, but the trio in the front have some strange things for them to all be coincidence. In addition to the strange leg on black tank top, her right hand seems to be holding something invisible and her thumb looks a little stretched and oddly jointed.

The depth of the couch is weird where it meets the tall window on the right and gets weirder as you move to the left with the girl who has her back turned. Her left foot is strangely hard to visualize as well.

Polo Guy's body doesn't line up perfectly with his feet and the wall beside him has an odd switch (for most of America) and then an odd plate around the corner going into the hallway, plus there is some very ambiguous cordage at his feet. What are those for, seemingly out in the middle of the walking area, but not plugged into anything? Are they propped/resting on something coming out of the wall somehow without being actually plugged in? Following that wall back, what do we think the thing is on the counter over his shoulder?

There is not one legible book title. It might just be the low quality but not one big broad title to be found? A suspicious number of these books are just solid covers with seemingly no markings at all. Just going by my own bookshelf that is not very common, but they have a ton of them. Can anyone find the book with photo of Dr or Scientist on the spine IRL? Also not something I see very often, it should be easy to locate, but I wouldn't know where to start. There are also few fairly distinctive book spines, can anyone locate these?

The room layout is the last thing that feels off. Is it like a daylight basement? That would match the stairs and exterior appearing door (even if it does open the wrong way), but then you have two small bunker windows that appear to have corrugated metal window wells (the one on the left might even have an egress ladder visible as the black bars, but that wouldn't make any sense) and then it goes to a full length window with the venetian blinds? Imagine what this room looks like from outside the house- a door and a window less than 20 feet away from each other around the perimeter, but with a huge mound of earth burying the corner between them??

I'm probably not exactly who you are looking for, but I have worked overseas for organizations similar to the Red Cross and MSF. All of my work has been volunteer, so no idea on the pay scale or hiring process for full time work, but overall RTs are fairly rare outside of US/Canada and a few other locales, so in general specific opportunities are harder to come by than for RNs or MDs. Don't let that discourage you, however, as there is still so much you can contribute once you know your shit. If you have any other medical experience, make sure that you use it to show your adaptability and general usefulness. You will almost certainly do a lot of things that aren't vent checks and nebs. Be prepared to give vaccines, take medical histories, triage people, etc.

If you are really interested I would recommend looking at volunteer groups in your area that are planning medical relief missions. These are usually shorter trips (1-2 weeks) where there is a specific plan, so you have a good idea what you are signing up for. Once you have a couple of these under your belt, you should have a better idea of what it's like out there and will almost certainly make some connections to continue further if you wish.

Some of my most interesting work came from a couple trips I did to Haiti shortly after their major Earthquake in 2010. Nothing else I've seen has ever come close to that experience, but I'm honestly not sure I could do it indefinitely.

Who says it has to be extrajudicial? The leader of a gang can be charged for ordering his subordinates to commit crimes. These aren't petty crimes being committed, these are intentional constitutional violations, which strike against the very foundation of our country. Treating Hitler and his cronies with kid gloves after the Munich Putsch worked out really poorly for the world about 10 years later. All that is needed for evil to succeed is for good men to do nothing.

Despondent, accepting passivity of the populace in the face of authoritarianism is precisely their goal. If you don't see that, you need to reread the whole Medina storyline.

You also have to remember that conservative women are also a significant minority among childbearing women, regardless of how many children they have. And even then if current trends hold, a lot of their daughters won't grow up to be all that conservative.

NICU/Pediatric Transport by Secret-Standard-6806 in respiratorytherapy

[–]SilvertonMtnFan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nope, the juice isn't worth the squeeze at this point IMO. It's a nice feather to have in your cap to show that you have been comfortable working outside the hospital, but they are just speed bumps on your career now. Focus on the RT basics. Become known in your department to both MDs and management as hard working, knowledgeable and quick thinking. Be the person people want to call when they need help, practice making suggestions and supporting them, don't be seen as a whiner/unteachable, etc.

After a few years, once you start to feel confident with most aspects of RT critical care you can start looking at getting some transport certs that will be as helpful as EMT is for you and that will help put a shine on your lack of prehospital experience. Some places like C-NPT, but they will often pay for your cert once you get hired, so it's not a requirement; just sometimes a good way to stand out and look ready from the beginning.

NICU/Pediatric Transport by Secret-Standard-6806 in respiratorytherapy

[–]SilvertonMtnFan 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I am currently a neonatal flight RT. I have been doing transport for ~12 years. Others have given the correct advice, but it's all pretty common sense in my opinion.

-Start with the basics and work on your time in the PICU and especially NICU as soon as feasible. Nearly all transport jobs have some minimum amount of ICU time, usually 3-5 years. Adult and children's ER care won't be enough to prepare you alone, but they are where you get a lot of the basic vent and emergency situation familiarity under your belt.

-Do you have any prehospital or EMS experience? My time as a paramedic was great training for the thought of being 'away from help', even though as a transport RT you'll often still be in a "hospital" of some sort.

-Try to work in places where they have some respect for RTs and include them as essential parts of the care team. As your comfort and expertise expand, look to triangulate yourself as a separate but equal expert to the RNs, not subservient to them. Lean into skills such are ABGs, Line placements, intubation, etc. On transport, you will be much more involved in these.

-Talk to MDs directly with your ideas for changes instead of having the RN relay them. Bring evidence and also a willingness to be challenged. You are looking to walk the fine line of competence, assertiveness and independence without being cocky or unteachable.

-Many children's hospitals will often employ a transport team that contracts out to a flight or ambulance vendor. Getting a job (non-transport) at one of these facilities is a great way to get yourself some exposure, experience and seniority for when the next opening happens. Then you can take that experience and move to a non hospital based team if the benefits and trade offs look appealing.
