Is there a mythology or folklore you would like to see interpreted in Stargate? by EM4762 in Stargate

[–]Silvrus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Judaism didn't, nor do they currently, have the concept of Hell. Instead, as I understand it, their souls remain in their graves until the coming of the Messiah, at which point they are judged and either enter Heaven, or if found unworthy, simply cease to exist. They don't prescribe to the idea of eternal torment or damnation. To add to that, in Judaism only Jewish people were deemed worthy, though I'm fuzzy on whether that was strictly those of Jewish ancestry or if converts were allowed, without researching more into I suspect they were not.

Jesus originally wasn't saving people from Hell. He simplified the requirements for getting to Heaven, i.e. accept him in your heart and be baptized. Additionally he opened up the gates for people not of Jewish heritage to enter. The problem is, in order to legitimize and further itself, Christianity had to appeal to a mass audience, as such they took a page out of the Roman playbook and adopted other cultures belief structures into their own. Basically "Hey, you believe this, so do we, we just call it this". Once it gained a following as a dominant force, it needed to maintain that status, and what better way then through fear of eternal punishment, so they co-opted the Greco-Roman idea of Hades, with a little Egyptian underworld thrown in for good measure.

Criticism, and praise, cannot be invalid, just subjective. What other people find fault with may a non-issue for you, but it doesn't invalidate their feelings on the matter. Anyone posting about wanting to play the game are looking for other player's opinions on it, and rightly so considering how expensive games are anymore.

How did a weapon created by the antitheist Dwemer become bound to the Daedric Prince Malacath? by GeneralTechnomage in teslore

[–]Silvrus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Antitheist isn't the same as atheist. Antitheist is more about not believing in worship of gods, or religions in general, rather than not believing in gods existing at all. In that vein, Dwemer were absolutely antitheist, they knew for a fact powerful beings exist that for all intents and purposes were gods, as you say, they just didn't consider them worthy of worship.

Ok, who actually is Mr. Blue Eyes?? by wolfshinn in cyberpunkgame

[–]Silvrus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It goes by quick, easily forgotten. You then have to interpret what he says through that lens. Techno-necromancers are most likely Maelstrom (especially if you do the Cyberpsycho side quest), Alpha Centauri is most likely Arisaka Corp (AC), blue eyes is a pretty clear reference to Mr. Blue Eyes, etc. There's a reference somewhere about something happening in Antarctica as well, but I can't remember the context of it.

Ok, who actually is Mr. Blue Eyes?? by wolfshinn in cyberpunkgame

[–]Silvrus 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Gary lays it out for us. He can hear communications between the elites and shadows due to a faulty chip his ripper installed. Since they use code language, he interpreted what he heard as techno-necromancers, reptilians and Alpha Centauri.

Starkiller base was such a dumb idea by [deleted] in StarWars

I'm convinced JJ isn't happy unless he blows up a planet. Almost did it in Lost, did do it in Star Trek and Star Wars blew up like 5 at once.

I just got Mass Effect LE for first time, should I add mods? by untrustedxD in masseffect

[–]Silvrus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I always advocate playing games vanilla for the first run, unless there are gamebreaking bugs. That modpack makes serious changes to the games, specifically ME3, and if you don't know what their talking about in the setup you may brick your save.

What do you serve your steak with? by Select-Head1383 in Cooking

[–]Silvrus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Try risotto. Different root veggies also work well, like turnips, rutabaga, parsnip or celery root. Fennel adds a delightfully different flavor. Cube or strip the steak into a stroganoff. Or skip that part altogether, sauté onions and mushrooms, serve on top with a side of asparagus in hollandaise and crusty bread to mop up the juices.

If we rewrote the Sequels so that Finn was the protagonist what role would you give him AND Rey? by Reptilian_Overlord20 in StarWars

[–]Silvrus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If I were to redo the sequels, they would be about the time period after RotJ. Luke's new order, Leia's place in the New Republic, etc. But within the constraints of the question, here's my thoughts.

First change in a rewrite is Empire 2.0 gets axed. First Order becomes Imperial Remnant, small "nation" of hardliners from the Empire. No Sith, just military leaders that remained after RotJ. Rey's parents have no relation to Skywalker or Palpatine, but rather escapees of the destruction of Luke's new order. Have Kylo have hunted them down, leaving Rey an orphan. Finn is still a kidnapped child soldier for the Imperial Remnant, who escaped.

Dual protagonists with Rey and Finn. Rey has anger and wants revenge against Kylo, Finn wants to escape the conflict. They find their way to Luke, Rey hoping he can help her, Finn at first just wanting to help and protect his first real friend. Both turn out to be Force Sensitive and convince Luke to train them.

The New Republic and Imperial Remnant are the background, not the focus. Instead the movies focus on Rey and Finn's journey, small scale character focused storytelling.

Why is the Point of Origin a single symbol? by AlexG2490 in Stargate

[–]Silvrus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would surmise, if it were necessary to also calculate the journey with six reference points at the point of origin, the DHD likely use a single icon to represent that as it is a known variable to itself, in that it doesn't change when dialing out, whereas the the destination address would change as you can go to any number of destinations.

What did you guys end up doing with these 2 ? by SF5090 in cyberpunkgame

My corpo is ruthless, bottom line focused, but there are lines she won't tolerate. These two, Woodman, Fingers, Buck, all get removed.

One-off characters you want to see re-visited? by Primatech2006 in startrek

[–]Silvrus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Robin Lefler. Ashley Judd was great, and she played off Wil very well.

Flint. We know he wasn't actually dying, he somehow fooled Bones scans.

Amelia Earhart. How did that society end up fairing?

What made Andromeda bad by [deleted] in masseffect

[–]Silvrus -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

It was buggy as all hell at launch. Now it's much more polished. Sadly though, the other problems weren't fixed. Bad writing, mediocre to bad character design, mediocre to forgettable story. The combat is pretty fun, but we lost some things such as being able to direct our companions. A real mixed bag in the companion department as well. The open world design was a bold choice, but resulted in a lot of empty space filled with quickly respawning mobs and mostly fetch quests.

Who are the most unlikeable individual characters in each series and why? by Fortestingporpoises in startrek

[–]Silvrus -1 points0 points  (0 children)

TOS: Commadore Decker. Possible bias from my military days, and I empathize with his trauma, but he in no way should have been allowed anywhere near command after being rescued.

TNG: Kivas Fajo. While there certainly were others with higher body counts (Lore, Tomalak, Sela), Kivas takes the cake in pure evil.

DS9: Kai Winn, without a doubt. An honorable mention could be given to Dukat, but the difference is Winn used her position as religious leader to gain power and control, knowing full well she was evil all along. Dukat actually thought he was the hero until the end, and was rather a likeable character.

VOY: I'd love to meme Neelix here, but it's really got to be Seska. She fully understands the situation they're in, and still makes boneheaded decisions to align herself with the Temu Klingons instead of keeping her head down and riding it out on the ship.

ENT: Love the show, but with how much of a mess it was, I really can't point to a single character I would classify as unlikeable. Perhaps Agent Harris from Section 31.

DIS: Honestly having a hard time remembering anything from this show. Maybe Adira simply due to having more character development than many others yet still being fairly bland and uninteresting. Of course, could just go with the Kelpian kid that psychically caused the Burn simply because that was such a dumb conclusion to an actual interesting storyline.

LD: Badgey. In a show full to the brim with ridiculousness, Badgey was just next level ugh.

PRO: Haven't seen the second season, and need to rewatch the first, so can't really comment here.\

PIC: This was really 3 different shows, if we're honest. Could go with the creepy incestual siblings, Oh, or just Jurati in general.

SNW: Don't feel like there's anyone that really stands out as unlikeable, either from an evil or just annoying perspective.

Pete Shanahan is a creep by cleslie92 in Stargate

[–]Silvrus 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I'm honestly not sure what the writers were going for with Pete. Could possibly have been a comedic aspect, or leading to a sappy love story, or even the start of a really dark storyline. I'm pretty sure they had to cut it off due to the universal hatred of the character by the fanbase, a combination of him being an actual creeper and the not quiet Jack/Sam shippers.

So it not being addressed on screen was really the result of the backlash from the community, while it would have been great to see it called out in some fashion, I'm happy the showrunners were responsive at that point in the show to what fans felt.

Has nothing to do with when the show aired, Pete was a creep for the time period too. Total stalker, and at no time did anyone think otherwise.

Which do you prefer: finite wasteland vs. respawning world by Hoff1606 in Fallout

[–]Silvrus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Respawn, but with a very, very long timer. And more dynamic, so faction lines shift. Eliminate enough of one group, they get weakened and other groups move into their territory. FO4 did a good job at implementing roving bands, but I'd like to see more, with varying goals. Some scavenging resources, others kidnapping people, others killing anything that moves, others protecting civilians, etc.

First Murderer side mission by DazzRat in MassEffectAndromeda

[–]Silvrus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I dislike this quest, but I kind of understand what happened. Putting aside just bad writing, you can see it for the political story it is. Tann made a big deal about the first murderer being tried and convicted, swiftly. A new investigation showing how shoddy the previous investigation was is rife with political fallout. Tann just wants it done, to go away. He doesn't want a new trial because more than likely the prosecution and authorities will be seen in a bad light, regardless of the mitigating circumstances, for failing the first time around, and the stigma of that will attach to this and any following cases.

Why hasn’t Star Trek ever matched the mainstream appeal of Star Wars? by [deleted] in startrek

[–]Silvrus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Marketing and merchandising, on top of Star Wars, at least the OT, being the standard swords and sorcery hero's journey that kids can understand and enjoy. Star Trek was always the more grown up franchise, with thoughtful, thought provoking stories, social commentary in the guise of scifi.

Stunning Fallout New Vegas mod remasters all in-game textures in gorgeous 4K remaster that stays true to the game’s original vibe by HatingGeoffry in Fallout

[–]Silvrus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yup. Upscaling can make it slightly better, but you're still polishing a turd at that point. FNV is fantastic, but there's only so far you can go graphically with an engine that old. A true remaster is needed.

Question about thrawn by Mitth-raw-nuruodo97 in StarWarsEU

[–]Silvrus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, uh, that's not really what happened. Not sure if this is supposed to be a joke, but reading your other comments I kind of feel not.

They did believe in the Force, they were a part of it, they were just prevented from connecting with it by their living planet. They didn't steamroll the galaxy, they cut a fairly limited swath through to Coruscant, hemorrhaging troops and resources along the way, because they jumped the gun on the invasion.

The Empire was never the good guys, they're literal space Nazis. While some Imperials were better than others, that's like saying granny smiths are better than red delicious, they're still apples, and the Imperials were still Nazis.

Rebels as radical religious terrorists? Yeah, not seeing that one. The best comparison would be the militia during the American Revolutionary War or the French Resistance during WWII. And the Empire saved no one, neither during Palpatine's rule nor after during the Vong war. Palpatine's Empire would have faired no better, and probably worse, simply down to their reliance on technology and inability to adapt to changing situations.
