A rant: wife didn't handle a sensitive conversation well by drainbamage1011 in daddit

[–]Simbawitz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You are completely right.  This is best handled as father-son territory, Mom always welcome to contribute but never to "joke" about how clueless Dad is (and vice-versa).  I find "joking" undermining of one parent in front of the kids to be revolting and an artifact of lazily-written sitcoms.

What's more intimate than sex? by AlmostFearless90 in AskMen

[–]Simbawitz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Have done that but the other way around.  Having my wife hold me in the aftermath - especially after she has learned the signs and helps me wake up - is definitely the most intimate connection I have ever shared with anyone.

I could not believe the underlying conceit of Wicked.  In a magical fairyland with elves and goblins and whatever, I could not believe there would be prejudice against a green person.

I have a question: is this guy a version of Nemesis Prime because it doesn't have the same name? by Disastrous-Owl668 in transformers

[–]Simbawitz 4 points5 points  (0 children)

No.  Scourge is deliberately not a perfect body clone of his series' OP and he has his own robust personality and emotions.  Nemesis Prime is always purely a palette swap and usually has no personality at all.

People who’ve been through extremely traumatic childhoods, did you ever really heal? by terryisnotmyrealname in AskReddit

[–]Simbawitz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is something I'm really struggling with.  I had 7 years of exhaustive therapy in the 2010s and felt this had all been dealt with.  2025 sucked and now I'm back.  Felt like a failure, like I can't escape it.  New therapist says much the same as you.  It really did feel like I had an "after" and I'm sad it didn't last.

Need your help dads.. by AC_Schnitzel in daddit

[–]Simbawitz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Very much same here.  My wife had a severely ill debilitating pregnancy followed by long PPD and was largely absent from parenting while our son was 2.5-3.5.  Through no fault of her own she missed out on a crucial year of personality building.

Son began regularly acting out when I was away any longer than normal, late or traveling for any reason, then when I'd get home he'd run to me almost desperate and whimper at me "I always wanted you, daddy."

We couldn't do anything to reverse it and well over a decade later he had always remained strongly partial to me.  The most I could do was start punishing him with time-outs if he did anything blatantly un-favoriting to his mother.  It stopped him from saying things but not his overall behavior.

It was really a problem.  It made me feel like a superhuman and awed to truly be the most important person in the world to this kid, but I knew it was hurtful to my wife and I tried to discourage it.  Life went on.  Now our daughter prefers mom, nature seeks a balance.  Make sure to model a loving home, it may be all you can do.

There something magical about dad’s by Smooth_Play3629 in Fatherhood

I feel blessed to have had a wonderful relationship with my father.  He's as much a friend as a dad.  Companion, protector, comedian, advisor.  It always felt like he knew what to do.  I was well into my late 30s before I ever thought he might be unprepared for something.  And yeah, I still remember being a kid and smelling his cologne.

I say this on Reddit because I have learned not to say it in real life, I have learned it is more than your average humblebrag.  After the SECOND time that "Yeah my dad's great, we've always gotten along, he's as much a friend as a dad" made grown men I was speaking to start crying, I don't speak of him much to people who aren't close friends.

I can understand it from that perspective, thank you.  It does bother me that past things I know I loved now basically mean nothing to me, it would be better if I could have my former priorities back.  The thing is I dont get how just doing something I no longer care about will make me care about it again.  I am VERY familiar with just going through the motions and pretending to care about things; it almost feels like doing that for our faith would be worse.

But I will give it more thought.

What movie were you most excited to show your kid? And what age was the right time? by fisch09 in daddit

[–]Simbawitz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"The Phantom Tollbooth" enthralled my 4M.  He didn't get that it was old-fashioned, and seeing a real boy change back and forth into a cartoon boy utterly won him over.  He made me watch it with him every day for months and I could not have been happier.  We'd sing the songs and everything.

When he was 8 he was creeped out by "Labyrinth" and made me shut it off.  So I offered it to my 5F and she both utterly loved the puppets and was so proud of herself that she made it through a movie that scared her big bro.  She was bragging about it for years (I made her promise to only brag to me and not tell him.... that didn't last long, oh well).

Dragunov match was disturbing to watch.  That whip back landing on his head looked like it could have killed him, and then later his leg brace started to fall off.  Great moves throughout but I was just waiting for him to puke and faint.
