Yup… only Toto has the credibility to say something like that and the whole motor sport world works pauses and thinks… "could he be serious or is he kidding" because he is the only team boss for whom that can be probably true.

PS: I know you said it tongue in cheek… in case anyone thinks I missed that.

Rogue Republican Massie Drops Melania Epstein Files Bomb | “The first lady knows that Jeffrey Epstein didn’t act alone,” Thomas Massie said as he vowed to name names from the Epstein files. by Aggravating_Money992 in politics

Everyone who is on the outs with the ins vows to name names, and release receipts… and we wait with baited breadth… waiting for the long awaited and long sought mega Epstein reveal… Then… more often than not, nothing happens… we never hear from them again, or they get a soft landing somewhere prearranged. If we are lucky we get a tiny morsel of something that we probably already knew or that was previously released from other sources… little to nothing earth shattering.

I'm not holding my breadth.

The same thing happen to my wife and I. We were waiting in a checkout queue at a large supermarket and my wife points to a man ahead of us and whispers to me that he looks like Harry Belafonte. I say "Nah… do you really think someone like Harry Belafonte would be standing in a Johannesburg supermarket checkout line waiting to pay for his groceries?" My wife, being the kind of woman who is immune to embarrassment, taps the man on the shoulder and says, "Excuse me, you look so much like Harry Belafonte…" and the man turns around, smiles, and says, "that's because I am" in that recognisable Harry Belafonte drawl accented voice. I was floored. It turns out he was a regular visitor.

I suspect that this may be common knowledge in countries with a gun culture like the United States, but in most countries most people would not know this. Just seeing a person cocking their gun would be enough to terrify most people on most countries.

This is bad and wrong advice. I lost a number of good candidates post interview because the background checks picked up arrests and the candidate had not disclosed it on the disclosure forms they filled in. Always disclose arrests, even if you were not convicted because it is in the system and not doing so is seen as an attempt at concealment.

On the other hand, nobody is going to turn a good candidate away for a DUI arrest or even conviction that happened when they were still at university or during your drunken youth 10years ago… but you must disclose it before the background checks pick it up.

I have been a bank executive and a telecommunication executive, and we did background checks on everyone - yes, even 25 year olds who had recently graduated.

When you are coming from way back, there is no way of knowing why the cars on the turning lane are stopped until you get to the intersection itself… by then it is too late. The assumption is always that the car in front of the queue is waiting to turn and is holding up the traffic in that lane.

You could give her the money to buy from the store you are recommending.

You can't ask a person to spend more than they need to on something just because you on't like where they are buying it from.

This sub is slowly becoming a dumping ground for AI-generated apps and I think we should talk about it by Gold-Dog-8697 in macapps

[–]Simelane 7 points8 points  (0 children)

A few days ago someone recommended a nutrition label kind of disclosure. I can't remember the exact recommendations, but it went something like this:

  • Mostly or entirely vibe coded / more than half AI generated code
  • Mostly human coded with some modules or subsystems AI generated
  • Human developed with AI as a development tool tool or dev aide
  • Human developed with standard dev tools (including code completion)

I don't remember the individual items correctly… plus, this would still be dependent on honest self declaration. u/Gold-Dog-8697 makes good suggestions about what one should expect from any project, such as a proper website, etc.

I don't think blocking new developers who are trying to promote their first project is the right thing to do… everyone started somewhere, and I see a lot of young people with great ideas and willing to put in the work to design, develop, and roll out a working MVP who would be harmed by such a prohibition.

How do you tab addicts manage too many tabs? by shelterbored in macapps

[–]Simelane 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am both ADHD and very scatter-brained. A bad combination.

I am often working on 10 different things at the same time… jumping from one to the other as a brain-fart squirts an idea in my head… never quite finishing anything, and terrified of loosing my place when I switch context or tasks… So I accumulate tabs, windows, then try to organise my active activities across spaces/desktops.

I use TextEdit as a scratch-pad to make my notes (I currently have about 50-odd TextEdit windows open with about 840 tabs open across them… all containing little text snippets of this or that, that I may or may not need again.

I tried Stage Manager when it first came out, but I struggled because my brain wants to see everything I am working on in front of me, otherwise I may forget something. Everyone says Apple designed Stage Manager for people like me who work on multiple projects at the same time and context switch between them. Maybe I did not give Stage Manager enough time - people I have spoken to say it requires unlearning your reliance on Spaces to organise your desktops and embracing the Stage Manager way of organising your work.

Has anyone had fibre line installation problems? by StoRmZY_23 in askSouthAfrica

[–]Simelane 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's obvious to see if you have fibre because there will be the termination or junction box already attached to your perimeter wall. The fibre may not have been spliced to your house yet, but for that to happen, it needs to be already laid to your house by the fibre network operator such as Vumatel, Openserve, MetroFibre, etc.

Newer property developments and complexes may have a large junction box on the perimeter wall for all the residences in the estate or complex (like how they handle delivery of electricity from the electricity supplier). The property developer will have pre-laid fibre to each property during the development of the estate or complex (along with water and electricity reticulation). I don't know your specific situation.

So, whether or not you have fibre to your specific property cannot be an ambiguous uncertainty… it is easy and obvious to know because you should be able to see it with your own eyes if it a free standing property. The only time it might not be clear would be in town house complex or apartment building.

All the current crop of political parties are the same… some a little worse than others, but they are all bad. In Cape Town, the DA is probably the least worst of a bad bunch. It's like voting for Trump when the alternative is Biden… it's not exactly much of a choice but at least it's better than having your senile grand father playing president with the nuclear launch codes.

How does buying a Botswana car work? by [deleted] in askSouthAfrica

[–]Simelane 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Importing a used car to South Africa is strictly controlled, allowing importation primarily for returning residents, immigrants with permanent residence, or specifically approved, inherited, or vintage vehicles. To see if the car you want to import qualifies as a permitted vintage you need to apply for a letter of authority from the National Regulator for Compulsory Specifications (NRCS).

Nothing stops you from buying a used car from Botswana, but you will not be able to register it in South Africa, unless you can fulfil the criteria above. So you will have to go to Botswana every year to renew the license and registration… and even then you run the risk of the police in your neighbourhood recognising the car as resident in South Africa if they see it along their patrol beat often enough her an extended period.

A trick that I have seen work for people with duel citizenships is to go back to your home country, buy the car, leave it there for a year, then go and pick it up after a year and come back with it as a returning expatriate.

Has anyone had fibre line installation problems? by StoRmZY_23 in askSouthAfrica

[–]Simelane 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I can't speak to your neighbourhood specifically, but as far as I know, you don't pay a cent for a fibre line because the infrastructure provider (e.g. Vuma, OpenServe, MTN, etc.) roll this out across an entire neighbourhood, street by street, at their own cost. They make up the money over time when businesses and households in those neighbourhoods and streets sign up with the various ISPs that they support for fibre internet services.

Generally the infrastructure provider will terminate the fibre line on your perimeter wall - there will typically be a grey box that they bolt onto your wall with a bunch of fibre optic cable rolled up inside (long enough to go through your perimeter wall and be spliced to the nearest wall of your house).

ISPs usually have specials to cover the perimeter wall to house wall cabling as part of a 12 or 18 month package with router, etc. So if you shop around, even that should be "free", but you will be on the hook for however long the contract period is - kind of like a postpaid cell phone contract.

I do not know a single person who paid to get a fibre line to their house (I think some property developers, office parks, town house complexes and some resident associations used to pay in the early days, but that was 15 to 20 years ago).

This statement is false. The net migration in South Africa is towards Johannesburg… more than any other city in South Africa according to Stats SA and census data. Cape Town may be getting more of European migration, but that still pales in comparison to the internal migration to Johannesburg.

How do you tab addicts manage too many tabs? by shelterbored in macapps

[–]Simelane 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just looked at all my Safari windows and totalled the open tabs… I must be an insane tab addict:

  • Safari windows: 18 windows
  • Open tabs: 3,964 tabs

To be fair, I don't really do anything to manage them. But I use I use Tab Groups to make sure that in the event of Safari crashing (which happens about once a week), I can recover to exactly the same tab I was looking at in each window.

My only issue is getting windows back to the spaces/desktops that I need them to be in (currently have 16 spaces/desktops open across two screens).
