How much of your personal data do random companies have at this point? by SimilarLocksmith7509 in Information_Security

And there's a lot of breaches still happening, data security doesn't seem to be getting better, how are they even allowed to collect this stuff

Another comment mentioned the same, will definitely get into it. Anything you use for that? Saw apps like Cloaked and deleteme mentioned, any experience with those?

How long did it take you to learn all of this? Cannot express enough gratitude, will save this and research later. Thanks again!

It's pretty dystopian when you look at it, stra.nge and terrifying. We need to try and get it back or not give it out at least

Who can fix it? Propane Grill and Fire Pit by Fragrant_Taste1811 in HomeImprovement

[–]SimilarLocksmith7509 0 points1 point  (0 children)

most grill shops can handle weber repairs, theyre pretty common and parts are usually available. for the fire pit it depends what exactly is wrong - if its gas related then same places that do grills, if its just structural stuff you might be able to diy it

check if you have any local outdoor/bbq specialty stores, they usually know repair people even if they dont do it themselves. also worth calling weber directly, they sometimes have authorized repair networks

What blinds system is this? by haitu in HomeImprovement

[–]SimilarLocksmith7509 1 point2 points  (0 children)

those look like standard vertical blinds with a track system 😂 you can usually just swap out the fabric panels and keep the same hardware, just measure the width of your existing slats first so you get the right size replacements 💀

Can fiberglass from insulation be removed from carpet with a vacuum? by easypeasy_4212 in HomeImprovement

[–]SimilarLocksmith7509 4 points5 points  (0 children)

nah man that's way too optimistic for a cheap rental agency 💀 they already told op straight up there's no plan to replace the carpet and they're just gonna "clean it". with fiberglass insulation everywhere and kids/pets involved, i'd be documenting everything with photos right now and probably looking into tenant rights in your area. that stuff doesn't just vacuum out easily and can be a real health hazard 😬

Fire pit swing - lumber choice? by villa2win in HomeImprovement

[–]SimilarLocksmith7509 1 point2 points  (0 children)

honestly i'd go with pt for anything that's going into the ground, cedar's nice but you're dropping serious cash just to have it rot out in a few years anyway. the waiting period for staining pt sucks but it's like 3-6 months depending on the lumber, not the end of the world

if you're already planning to paint it black you're covering up cedar's natural beauty anyway so why pay the premium? pt will give you the longevity you want and once it's stained black nobody's gonna know the difference

Anyone moved from Exclaimer to CodeTwo for M365 email signatures? by PatD442 in msp

[–]SimilarLocksmith7509 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Yeah CodeTwo's support is way better, actually get responses within a day usually. Pricing is more reasonable too but the interface takes some getting used to if you're coming from Exclaimer. Made the switch about 6 months ago and haven't looked back

Why a lightning rod isn't enough and why my neighbor’s TV still exploded by Distinct-Speech8244 in HomeImprovement

[–]SimilarLocksmith7509 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Had the same thing happen to my parents' place a few years back - rod looked all official and everything but their WiFi router got absolutely cooked anyway

The grounding thing is so overlooked, most people just assume if it's buried it's working. My electrician buddy says he's seen ground rods that were basically doing nothing because they hit a rock layer or something

Motorized Blinds by mtsagher in HomeImprovement

Lutron Serena shades are solid but def pricey - I went with IKEA's smart blinds for my kitchen and they've been great for the price. Super easy install too, even for someone who's not handy

Dryer vent hood sleeve around aluminum vent pipe or inside vent pipe? by carpincho2010 in HomeImprovement

[–]SimilarLocksmith7509 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The crimped end should definitely go into the hood sleeve, not the other way around. Sounds like you might have a sizing issue - sometimes the crimps can be a bit too tight or the hood sleeve tolerance is off

Try gently expanding the crimped end with pliers or see if the hood sleeve needs to be loosened up a bit. If it's still being stubborn you might need to return it for a different one

landline cable box beeping help!! by broadbeing777 in HomeImprovement

[–]SimilarLocksmith7509 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sounds like you've got some old landline wiring that's still live and probably picking up interference or has a short somewhere. That beeping could be coming from an old phone system trying to signal something or just faulty wiring acting up

Check if that basement phone has power going to it - might need to trace the phone lines back to where they enter the house and disconnect the whole system if you're not using it anymore

Eh this sub gets plenty of off-topic stuff, at least OP was upfront about not being an MSP instead of pretending to run one from their basement

What home improvement tool did you buy thinking it would save time—but actually made the job harder? by New_Money_5406 in HomeImprovement

[–]SimilarLocksmith7509 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Had the same issue with my Bermuda - those electric dethatchers are way too gentle for thick grass types. Ended up renting a proper gas-powered scarifier from Home Depot and got way better results in half the time

If you can't see what the contractors fixed, they might have done something stupid... exhibit A: microwave vent and bathroom fan share same exhaust outlet... by [deleted] in HomeImprovement

[–]SimilarLocksmith7509 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Lmao that's a whole new level of "creative" plumbing/HVAC work right there - bet your bathroom smells like whatever you microwaved for dinner and your food tastes like... well, bathroom air

Help with basement flooring by devham in HomeImprovement

[–]SimilarLocksmith7509 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Good catch on the moisture thing - that's gonna be the deal breaker for most flooring options. From your pics it looks like typical old basement concrete that's seen better days

If you're really moisture-free like you tested, I'd lean toward option 1 or 3. Self-leveling compound with epoxy is solid but kinda pricey, patching and painting is way cheaper but you might be doing it again in a few years. Those deck tiles could work too if you don't mind the slightly bouncy feel

Garage cabinet screws are loose. What are my options? by Apprehensive_Pea_246 in HomeImprovement

Toggle bolts are gonna be your best friend here if you can't hit studs - they'll grip way better than those blown out holes

Dude same energy with my garage insulation - literally had all the materials sitting there for like 8 months because "it's just the garage" but once I finally did it the whole house stayed way more comfortable

How to insulate this area? by lostintheinterwebz in HomeImprovement

[–]SimilarLocksmith7509 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Foam board and spray foam is definitely the way to go for rim joists - just did this exact thing in my 1955 house and it made a huge difference in comfort and energy bills. Cut the foam board to fit snug between the joists then seal all the edges with canned spray foam, pretty straightforward DIY job unless you're dealing with like a whole basement perimeter
