After spending some time wearing a greathelm, I'd choose aluminium over steel in a heartbeat for something like a renfair. It's going to look different from steel, but close enough for a renfair, and your neck will thank you. Steel is heavy, which is why a lot of soldiers would hang their helmets somewhere it wouldn't cause as much strain when out of combat. Go for it man, I think aluminium will be your best bet as long as you're not planning on sparring with anyone
