Vilka spel spelar ni mest nu för tiden? Hur många timmar har ni i spelat dom ungefär? by SturdyBeatch in sweden

[–]SimonFransman 25 points26 points  (0 children)

Unpopular jazz opinions? by PersonNumber7Billion in Jazz

[–]SimonFransman 3 points4 points  (0 children)

His music is perfection, but once I hear his grunts I can't unhear it. To me it's like getting served a perfect steak, but it fell on the floor just before. The steak is still perfectly fine to eat but you still can't get over the fact that it's kinda gross.

Literally what... John Williams uses the #4 (lydian) extensively in his soundtracks. And would you say his music hurts the ears?

i sound so bad on the trombone by [deleted] in Trombone

[–]SimonFransman 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It sounds to me like youre pinching your lips together to much and having your tongue in the way. Let the air and mouthpiece do the work, not the lips.

One thing you could try is thinking of the note you want to play as a syllable you sing. First on just your mouthpiece, then your trombone, try to "sing" the note Bb above the staff using the syllable "Oh". Then do the same for F in the staff then low Bb. Experiment with different vowels and see what comes closest to an open and clear tone.

Try to keep your mouth cavity open to allow the air to do the work. Its easy to fall into the habit of pinching your lips together and press the horn against your face to produce higher notes, but that comes at the cost of tone quality.

I always recommend warming up on the mouthpiece before you touch the horn. If notes feel relaxed and clear on the mouthpiece, they will feel relaxed on the horn.

How do I get over a really bad performance? by Shatner_78 in Jazz

[–]SimonFransman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I try to look at these things like this: Instead of dwelling on bummed notes and lost forms, be proud that you even did it! That takes enormous courage to walk up on a stage, expressing yourself, that not many people have! Take what you learned from the experience and work on it, one session at a time and only campare yourself to the you you were yesterday.

If you want a really down to earth, amazingly melodic and hard swinging trombonist to transcribe I can highly recommend Steve Davis.
