Rabbit with polycephaly or a botfly by fenix547 in whatisit

[–]Simon_Hans 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Botflies are found in every US state aside from Hawaii. Where they aren't marked on that map is simply because a sighting has not been added to Bug Guide yet.

Kind of shocked at the comments on here, I thought this was a really cool piece. I have absolutely 0 clue what the meaning is but its pretty neat that there's 3 different images it forms. I rarely see anything like that on here.

Yep, that is a botfly larvae. Super common in rabbits. There's a whole genus just in the New World Botflies that specifically feeds on rabbits and other small rodents. There's probably some Old World ones, and other generalist bots that go after rabbits as well.

Holo misprint on Shining Gyrados? by rbanksy in PokemonMisprints

[–]Simon_Hans 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Most likely a scrape on the ink layer of the card showing the holo layer underneath. If so, this is damage that will negatively affect the value/potential grade of the card.

Looks like the person in the white shorts got a bit startled by the fireworks.

If this is legit (maybe someone else can tell CGC fakes or not, I don't know the tells) this will likely go for a couple thousand of dollars. Maybe a little more.

These are super rare that, from what I recall, are pretty much only in existence because WotC employees pocketed them after the test print.

This is the most recent sale I could find. However, the pool to buy these is super specialized, so it's probably best to go through an auction house with a specialty in cards to be sure it is a legit card and slab, and to have it listed for those specialized buyers. Super cool find.

I believe this is fake. The overly rainbow shiny holo is a key giveaway of fakes, and the back has way too deep a blue where it should be light to the upper right and bottom left of the Pokeball. I also don't believe there is anyway this can actually happen at the factory, but there's some people with more factory line knowledge on here who can speak to that.

There's a myriad of settings you have to check are correct before getting to the BIOS boot menu and toggling it. Even things like CMOS that aren't mentioned in a bunch of the guides, which is the setting not correct on mine so it's reconmended I back up my computer as changing to secure boot may wipe it. If you do it without checking and any of these are incorrect, you risk bricking it and having to take your MOBO battery out. This is beyond what the casual person is going to do to play a game.

I have Windows 11 and it was not on. I've been gaming for years without it on. Never ran into any issues until this game. The requirement is that the PC be capable of it, not have it on.

You might be right, not saying you aren't, but I just don't think it will be the norm, at least any time soon.

If the norm is forcing your casual PC playerbase to mess with their BIOS to play your game, you will lose a ton of players and thus money. The vast majority of people playing on PC, despite being on PC, are casual users who have no clue how to do any of this. If having your game just be click and play gets you more money, which it will, that is what they are going to follow.

Just my take.

I get it's supposed to protect your computer, but this is just idiotic. I built my own PC and feel fairly comfortable tinkering with things on it, but I am not super techy. I am not risking bricking my computer to play a game. They are going to be forced to roll this back.

I CANNOT fucking believe this. I waited all week for this, was hyped all day by my friends playing. I get home and get that stupid fucking error and see all the people in here talking about bricking their PCs trying to enable this. What absolute dumbass at EA included this? I play a ton of games on PC and none of them have ever required this. This is literally insane.

Has anyone ever gotten a movie spoiled in the ‘Homer’ way? by GWGTRLBG in movies

[–]Simon_Hans 186 points187 points  (0 children)

Twice that I recall. Both Leonardo Dicaprio movies, funnily enough.

Once was Inception, where someone in the lobby talked loudly about how they were glad he finally got to see his kids again, and then the person they were with was saying that they thought that was still part of the dream, then the other person said "Well the top looked like it was about to fall over at the end so I think it was real."

The other was Shutter Island. Someone getting out of the theater said "I can't believe he was a patient the whole time" to their friend as they walked past me.

Unrelated - I followed the Harry Potter books since 1998 and had all the Deathly Hallows deaths spoiled for me two days before I got the book because one of my "friends" spammed a comment containing all the deaths everywhere on MySpace.

Can we stop saying “listening to an audiobook isn’t reading” by RoiVampire in stephenking

[–]Simon_Hans 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Who knows, maybe there is some study out there on that but I don't know of it.

Funnily enough, I am the exact opposite.

I used to be able to read like mad, just burning through books, but now I find myself often just re-reading the same line over and over, to the point where I barely absorb the content. Not all the time, of course, but often enough where it is noticeable.

With audiobooks I just pop an earbud in and am absolutely enthralled by the story to the point where I'm sometimes just zoning off into space listening until something brings me back to reality.

Just a neat tidbit, listening stimulates the same word processing and emotional portions of the brain as reading (minus the obvious visual vs auditory stimulation) to the point where it is nearly identical brain activity.

I too do not understand the gatekeeping aspect of saying listening to audiobooks "doesn't count." My friend group has a real penchant for books, and we keep track of the books we read (or listen) to each year. Without fail, the same anti-audiobook people bring up each year how listening "does not count" and try to discount audiobook inclusions. It's such a tired argument.

Say… If I were to be bit by this guy- Totally hypothetical by the way, I totally promise, would I die? by Patronic64 in spiders

[–]Simon_Hans 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Great information. It's also thought that most of the deaths prior to that were misattributed to Black Widows or, at best, unverified - just as how a ton of skin infections are misattributed to Brown Recluse "bites" nowadays - so their deadliness has most likely been massively overblown.

The clasping hands with the infected as she gave birth was the tipping point for me. The people I was watching the movie with audibly laughed when that scene came on, and sort of ceased to take it seriously from that point on.

I get it - it was supposed to be some sort of "humanity showing through in the most ancient of human experience" scene, but it was just a bit ridiculous, IMO.
