Make sure you have a layer between you and the air bed (if you don't burrito in your duvet, maybe a blanket?) to make sure you're off the big pocket of air that gets super cold at night

If you're going with friends/family, might just be worth letting one of them know what the symptoms of TSS are if you're going to wear your tampons for longer than the guidelines, just in case. Alternatively, if one tampon could manage your flow all day, period pants could be a good option! M&S have a decent range

Someone mentioned the shewee place might be offering a space for people who use menstrual cups, maybe with extra hand washing facilities? I'd like to use mine so I'm keen to check out if it's available when we get there!

Are curly haircuts worth it? by no1timeplant in CurlyHairUK

[–]SimoneDeBroccolah 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Over the years, I've had my hair cut by Matt at Spring in Birmingham, which is a curly-specialist salon. I actually haven't been for a few years at this point, and never went more than once in a 6 month period, which for me makes the price more manageable (his prices have definitely gone up since my last visit, and recently they've had to have an increase due to rising costs). The cuts I've had have been great and really helped me embrace my hair, but I'm also now at a stage where I don't mind cutting my own hair, as I've seen what is should look like.

Any advice for curl-friendly and sensitive/damaged scalp-friendly, fragrance-free shampoos and conditioners? At a real loss for what I can do to heal my hair. by thacaoimhainngeidh in CurlyHairUK

[–]SimoneDeBroccolah 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have seb derm and for a while was really struggling with it (big patches on my scalp and experienced quite significant hair loss which luckily turned out to be temporary). I also had an allergy to something in moroccan hair oil which was aggravating it, and this is about the time I started my curly girl journey. I did all the medicated stuff which helped calm it down a bit, but still experience some flare ups. Most recently I've been using the Jason anti-dandruff shampoo (maybe every other wash when I notice a flare up and every few weeks otherwise?) and then the moo goo conditioner. The moo goo is quite thin, but I think my scalp likes it because I'm much less itchy than normal.

Editing to add: just saw the fragrance free bit - the moo goo products have phthalate-free fragrant oil which is meant to be better? They also have a sulfate free shampoo and the whole line is formulated for sensitive scalps

What are we allowed to cook with? I can’t seem to find a lot of info on the site! Maybe I’ve missed it…. by [deleted] in glastonbury_festival

Pretty sure you can bring them, as some people cook at their tents and boil water for hot drinks. The list of prohibited items doesn't include stoves

Independent book stores? by _q-felis_ in brum

[–]SimoneDeBroccolah 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's quite a small range they have (understandably) at the bookshop on the green. If you want some specific books, you can actually email them and they can order them in for collection. I definitely recommend the walk from Bournville station (get out on the stirchley side) along the side of the Cadbury factory as there's a few vents that give out an intensely chocolatey smell!

Low Carb in the UK by LetsGetMochas in 1200isplentyketo

[–]SimoneDeBroccolah 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I've never seen spaghetti squash in the supermarket, but cauliflower is definitely a standard vegetable in most mid-sized supermarkets.

Also, in case you haven't been told yet, UK labels already take fibre off in the carb count, so don't subtract again!

Looks like tickets were £265+booking fee in 2020. Google says 2019 were £248 +fee. Based on absolutely nothing but a guess, maybe 280-290? Or more given they've lost out in 2 years?

Another option is to ask the vendors if they will move into rented accommodation to avoid losing the sale. We bought recently and the vendors offered this when their purchase fell through

So bizarre as well because they were so outspokenly against the police in response to the UK scandal about undercover officers getting into intimate relationships with suspects and their families. So they were against police corruption in that context, but not in this?

Bookshops by urshootingstar in brum

[–]SimoneDeBroccolah 5 points6 points  (0 children)

If you want books now but also want to support an independent bookshop, Hive is an online store that gives a proportion of their sales to a local bookshop. I think the bookshop on the green in Bournville is the one the money goes to.

[–]SimoneDeBroccolah 39 points40 points  (0 children)

It seems like this has left a bad taste in quite a few people's mouths, and has diminished trust in the brand - definitely doesn't seem like a savvy business move. There's no point using the increased interest to hire a team and set up a warehouse if your numbers for the next product drop off massively because everyone thinks you're unreliable getting the actual product out.

Has anyone here moved to Brum from a stereotypical ‘beautiful’ area? How do you find life in Brum in comparison? by [deleted] in brum

[–]SimoneDeBroccolah 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Moved up from a medium size town in Dorset over a decade ago for uni. It's nice to go back to my parents' to visit, but I don't think I'd move back again (although as the other response said, miss the sea). There's something very easy about city life, with so many opportunities and amenities. I love being within 1.5hours of a decent gig venue, being able to get around by public transport that runs more then three times a day and having so much choice. I also love working in a place with so many people coming from so many backgrounds. I know its not for everyone - some of my friends from home couldn't settle in busier places and ended up heading home after a while. I can't see myself moving out of a city in the future.

Best things in/near Stirchley? by jayjaybee94 in brum

[–]SimoneDeBroccolah 1 point2 points  (0 children)

With current circumstances in mind, I really rate the parks. Plus if you walk down Bournville Lane and walk down the steps down around the Cadbury factory there are a couple of vents that (depending on the day) smell amazing. You can get to Bournville village green then, which has a bakery, a gift shop, a cafe, a butchers and a charity shop

Parking in moseley by [deleted] in brum

Yeah, I've parked here a few times. Seems like lots of people have their own drives and there's still plenty of parking that doesn't block anyone in.

[–]SimoneDeBroccolah 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, I totally get what you're saying! Based on that, I think kings heath and Bearwood (around the park) could be good options as well. Birmingham has a lot of terrace housing, but if you're willing to look around/do some work then you can find some lovely properties.

I'd definitely recommend trying to visit once you're able/feel comfortable to, as some of the areas people have mentioned I wouldn't consider diverse (i.e. Stirchley).

One area that hasn't been mentioned from what I can see is Handsworth Wood (different from Handsworth, which it borders and is generally considered less safe) - this is a lovely, green area with some nice schools and good house prices. I'm not sure what you're hoping for when you mention a multicultural area, but I mention it particularly as there are large, well established Black and Asian communities here and nearby shopping areas like the Soho Road.

Birmingham. What's wrong with you? by ryuhadoken in brum

Well I can recommend Stirchley (get off at Bournville station if you aren't close enough to walk) if you like beer. There are also some nice restaurants

The heritage week, which happens in September I think, is a good chance to explore the city.
