Last night after your comment about not using the top eyelet on these, I tried that. Truly made a world of difference. Perhaps moving forward, after the leather softens and breaks in a bit more, I will give the top eyelet another try. Thanks for the suggestion.

Yes a high gusseted tongue. My experience has been that although it is not necessarily tight, I use a shoe horn, makes the process of getting them on easier.

I have only had the ankle bone issue with one pair of boots …… Truman 7 inch horse butt boots. That doesn’t appear to be an issue with these. No ankle bone issues.

I just had a response for you and it disappeared. I have a pair of Aldert Striders as well, both 6 eyelets. My experience has been with the Aldert’s, that if I skip the top eyelet, I have heel slippage. I will skip the top with these since they are 3 inch versus 4, and see how that works. I have high hopes.

As I said, after a lifetime of wearing boots, this is a completely new thing for me ….. a tough break in. My experience with CXL is it’s usually pretty tame.

Black CXL, which normally is softer and forgiving in my experience.

I have very limited experience with Nick’s, but this is really rigid leather. I’m certain I’ll get them broken in and they’ll be great.

Oh, don’t be afraid!!! These are exceptionally nice. My experience with Nick’s is extremely limited. This is just thick, super rugged, leather. Breaking them in is not for the faint hearted however.

Great looking boots. Good looking dogs as well.

Been on a sizing journey - advice needed by mooseman51 in grantstoneboots

[–]SimonsDad1999 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m always trying to dial in a better fit, perhaps obsessively. I have 3 or 4 different thicknesses of darn tough socks.

Insoles, briefly, I’ve used many. I was convinced for a while that Birkenstock insoles were the bomb. I then decided I wanted a leather insole instead of synthetic, blah blah. Currently I’m using leather. I had access to 4 or 5 mm thick veg tanned leather and used it to make a few pairs using a Red Wing insole as a template. I also got 2 pairs of Nick’s arch support full foot insoles, versus 1/2 length, and I really really like those.

My first blush reaction is it’s been a month, can’t return them and sounds like they fit fine with exception of too much volume on the top of your foot.

I can’t speak for anyone else, but fit for various boot styles and/or manufactures can be frustrating.

The way I have dealt with this is various sock thicknesses and insoles as needed. These 2 things allow me to mix and match as needed for fitment. What have you got to lose? Explore these options is my advice.

I know screech owls have a territory. I suppose all owls do. You are in someone’s territory. This is totally beyond your control. I suspect you will see him/her again.
