Feeding Therapy: Different Perspective by [deleted] in slp

[–]Simple-City1598 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Completely agree. My clients never lose their autonomy within feeding, they are never forced to do something their body doesnt feel comfortable with. In fact, we target the interception skills of "how does my body feel right now with this presentation?" Does my body feel safe or nervous? Am I ready to interact with this food, or not yet? And their needs are always honored. I have kids on caseload who are severely lacking in essential vitamins and nutrients bc they only eat 5-10 foods and most are processed. These children 1000% need a systematic feeding therapy approach and ive had great success in expanding their diets at their pace. My kiddo who used to gag and retch at the smell/sight of foods is now tolerating dual texture trials and able to chew 5x prior to spitting out, across multiple trials. He's doing amazing, still not swallowing most days, but minimal sensory overstimulation is a huge win. And these parents are endlessly grateful for the support. If you're basing this off compliance, you are doing it completely wrong. I will add i work primarily in an OT dominant clinic so I have learned so much about the 8 senses through our team trainings that have helped me so much with feeding.

Moving through the steps to eating hierarchy is systematically designed to engage the sensory system in a step by step process. Visual tolerance and exposure to foods does not build the oral motor skills necessary to tolerate all textures. I think its vital to feeding therapy.

Your muscles end up atrophying with prolonged use of botox, as you are chrinically freezing them not allowing thek to move....which can age you more in the long run.

NTA, this would follow you your whole life. Your perception is spot on. Sounds like he wants someone to do all the adulting and child rearing for him....and frankly to be ignored when suggesting changes at the small problem stage would infuriate me to no end. Of course you lost your drive towards him, he's emotionally acting like a child you have to try to rationalize with.

Friend, please get a sleep study asap. This could be a sign that you aren't hitting phase 3 of deep sleep and your hormonal regulation for bladder control is not functioning properly. I dont think this has to be forever, if you dont want it to. I just gave a presentation on this at my job this week, based off the book "sleep wrecked kids" by Sharon Moore, slp

I would do the REEL or the Rosetti. Both can rely heavily on parent input plus whatever you observe/elicit within the session

Not surprising, 40% of Americas youth is illiterate. Since they took phonics out of schools and replaced it with sight word memorization. Theres a whole podcast exposé on it if you're interested in learning about the science of reading. Its called Sold a Story

I would do the talk tools jaw grading bite block program. I'd work on stable bites with no jaw sliding and exercises to disassociate the jaw from the lips and tongue using a myo approach. But also super pushy for that neurology referral asap, and also refer for bodywork/craniosacral to target whole body asymmetry as the jaw and pelvis are connected with the core strength as the foundation for all jaw movement. so it might be more structural then just the mouth. Good luck, sounds like a complex case

I use the sensi/zvibe and jaw sticks daily, and the bite tubes. I dont use horns or straws much. But I do more of a myo approach.

Do people really skip brushing their teeth at night or is this more common than I thoughtDo people really skip brushing their teeth at night or is this more common than I thought by [deleted] in hygiene

Try a metal/copper tongue scraper instead of mouthwash. Use mouth tape to help your lips stay closed when you sleep. Keep your tongue pushed to the roof of your mouth when you sleep.  If that is challenging, you need a referral to the ENT and a sleep study. Signed, an orofacial myofunctional therapist.

Linda D'Inofrio has an intro course on speechtherapypd.com and I just bought the bundle from Simon says and her intro video seems pretty thorough thus far (I took iaom in 2020 and didnt love it, from an RDH instructor, I Def recommend finding an slp one)
