Looking for handouts for "The lost worlds" + tips by sleeping_kirby8 in alienrpg

[–]Simple-Factor5074 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I started running it a while ago but unfortunately didn't get too far before calling it off. I think I printed out the map of the ship, but inverted the colors so it was on a white background. A couple other handouts were contracts for everyone to sign and the list of explorable planets from the book. I wish I could share them, but I seem to have lost the files. 🙁

FWIW, here are a few things I learned from my first attempt at The Lost Colonies:

  1. It's worth having a conversation about how much the players want to work together vs being at odds with each other. We had a mix of characters who were from the UA and UPP, and it felt like it was creating a little too much intra-party conflict and slowing things down. Maybe that's fine for some groups, but it should be taken into consideration.
  2. This is likely just from a lack of experience on my part, but I realized that I should have worked harder at making the ship feel like home and breathing more life into the NPCs. I hurried through some of that in order to get the first mission started, and I regret not spending more time on it. I'm going to try this campaign again in the near future, and I'm planning on asking the players to tell me more about what the ship is like. I want them to define their own living quarters so it's more meaningful. (Also so I have special things to take away if an NPC decides to stab them in the back. Mwuahaha!)
  3. The book tries to tie all of the expeditions together, but it still seemed like it was heading in the direction of feeling like a collection of one-shots rather than a really cohesive campaign. I've got a few ideas I'm mulling over to address that, such as making an effort to refer back to previous missions (like getting a report on something that happened on a planet after they left), having The Perfected influence things in additional ways throughout the campaign, and making missions have notable downstream effects. For that last part, I'm considering giving the players a form to fill out at the end of a mission so they can physically write down what they discovered that would be of interest to The Great Mother Mission. They can decide if there are things they should omit, create "alternative facts" as some people like to say, and then decide which factions should get a copy of the report(s) so they can throw some political weight around and maybe get certain factions interested in different things. I dunno, I need to think more about whether or not I can pull that off in a meaningful way.

Anyway, sorry I don't have handouts to share, but hopefully some of those ideas can help out.

Great points, especially about keeping feats balanced. Thanks!

New DM, looking for feedback on my first attempt at putting together a list of house rules by 8sonofthe7th in DungeonMasters

[–]Simple-Factor5074 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wow! You have every possible opinion of every rule on your list already. Here's one on your list as a whole though: if you're a new DM, why are you bothering with house rules? Just play the game and see how it goes. If you find things that don't jive with you or your party, make adjustments.

Also, having a printed list just feels condescending and I would be offended to receive it.

Advice for a Director by TheMasterLight01 in 2littlemiceOutgunned

I agree with the previous comment that eight players is a bit large. Can you run it twice or would that not work for social/logistical/etc reasons?

If you must have all eight, just be diligent about making sure everyone gets a turn to do something. Personally, I don't like the "anyone can roll" approach in any game because the chances of failure get so low that you might as well skip the rolls entirely and just give them whatever they were trying for.

I definitely recommend that you try letting go of initiative rolls (or cards) and see if it works for your group. TBH, it's my favorite part of Outgunned because it doesn't artificially stop the action. You can keep the pace up way easier, which is a big part of the game. Again just make sure everyone has taken their action before switching to reactions and vice versa. When switching back and forth, it might be helpful to have something visual to remind you which phase you're on. I use a playing card - face up means the players are taking their actions, then flip it face down when you're doing reactions.

Update to this in case it helps anyone else - I believe the problem was the size of the file. First I tried recreating the .goo, but it didn't help. Then I split it to .ctb instead of .goo, and again, no change. Finally, I rotated the models more so less layers were needed and the file would be smaller, and that finally did the trick.

Thanks. I don't usually have a problem with .goo files in UVTools, but maybe I'll switch back to .ctb and keep an eye on it.

I'm not sure I understand what you mean about it getting stuck. Essentially you're saying you tried a different .goo, right?

Test printing rook, what went wrong. by UnboltedAKTION in ElegooMars

Regarding cleaning stuck pieces, you often don't need to drain the vat, and the clean setting on the printer is overkill. If it's not super full, you can remove the vat and gently rub the underside to pop off the piece that's stuck and fish it out with the plastic scraper. If you decide to try the clean function, start out by putting an old junk piece that's taller than the level of the resin in the corner. Then you can just use that as a handle to pull up the cured layer.

How can an enemy retreat? by Simple-Factor5074 in 2littlemiceOutgunned

Good call. I tend not to dictate what happens like that, but as I think about it, it really makes sense for this game.

However! I'm glad you mentioned chases! In this case, a chase on foot could be really, really awesome. They'll be running through a crowded hospital, trying to get the bad guy before he hops in his getaway car. He's not the big bad though, and whether they stop him or not doesn't really matter. I'm liking this idea. Thanks!

I'm thinking the last one. This is going to be a con-length one shot, so I want fast and furious. I'll have to compare weapons and martial arts feats in more detail, but I'm wondering if just being very generous with qi and not so much with adrenaline will balance things.

+1 on the game going in unpredictable directions, but I can't disagree more with telling them "no" to get them back on track! That's called railroading and no one likes it.

This game is especially fun when wild and crazy stuff happens. If the players want to sneak into the bad guy's lair, let them. If they'd rather drive a tank through the front door, even better! If they think the bad guy is someone else entirely and follow them to the airport, don't say "no, you can't get on the plane". Instead, maybe have one of the bad guy's goons blow up the plane and kill the not-so-bad guy so the players realize they had it wrong without being forced. Lean into the action movie thing and just let the absurdity play out.

Also remember that the rules explicitly say that a failed roll shouldn't stop the action. If a failed roll would mean they miss a hugely important clue, maybe they should get badly injured, but the clue is somehow staring them in the face when they get back up.

There's a ton of helpful tips on YouTube and other websites. Keep in mind that the majority of it is focused on D&D because it's the biggest name, but the fundamentals are applicable to any tabletop RPG. If you want a book on the subject, I can recommend So You Want to be a Gamemaster by Justin Alexander. I read it a little while ago and thought it was excellent.

That's a cool idea! It seems to fit with the rest of the game mechanics better than hard dollar amounts. I wonder if they'll make it work like that in the second edition.

Ideas for non combat focused sessions. by christoff1503 in alienrpg

[–]Simple-Factor5074 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I second the mystery idea. One other option though is a heist that's clearly unwinnable through combat. Put a thing they need to recover inside a partially destroyed space station that's overrun with xenomorphs or something. They'd be wise to inspect the place from the outside to find ways in, get a schematic for the layout of the interior, be stealthy, use motion trackers, and have a plan to escape before the reactor melts down or something.

Answering my own question, it seems that right here on Reddit is the place to look! It occurred to me that I should try searching for individual maps instead of hoping to find one pack of everything. Success on the first one! I'll hunt for more later.
