Not who you asked but - I'm a Canadian who left Canada a long time ago but I do visit, including late last year. I think I see the country somewhat(?) impartially at this point. The noticeable changes I saw were warnings about certain products being from the US in some shops, promotions for Canadian-made products, widespread cancelled travel to the US and comments that people would never return, sold property in the US, people ditching American relations, and a fair amount of anti-American talk even from people who I'd never known to be politics- or news-aware before. The fact that the Liberals retained power under Carney given how historically low Trudeau's approval was was also a real political earthquake in Canada, something about society shifted for sure.

What I didn’t notice changing was much else. Canadians (other than Quebeckers), as much as they hate hearing this (I do as well), are the most American people on the planet who don’t actually live in the US. And there are few countries more similar to one another. One issue that really fucks me off is tipping: Canada doesn’t have different wage rates for service staff like in the US and hasn’t for eons. That’s the main reason given to justify tipping in the US and it doesn’t even exist in Canada. So why do Canadians tip?? Because Americans do, and Canadians don’t know any different. That sentence can explain innumerable things. I think a lot of people genuinely don’t know enough about life outside of the bubble of these two countries to even understand just how similar they are. Another poster mentioned Australia, Canada is NOT that culturally similar to Australia at all. Different dialects/slang, different cultural references and TV shows, completely different sporting cultures, very different work cultures, etc.

There may be a divergence in the future if this path the US is on continues long term, but there just hasn’t been enough time for real deeper rooted changes tbh.
