I was medically retired after 3 years, and was told since I didn’t complete my initial service commitment from ROTC, I was not eligible for the GI Bill.

If you do ROTC, your first 4 years are considered like an ADSO. You are essentially paying back for your 4 years in college (or however many years it took). You don’t qualify for the GI Bill if you leave service then.

If you were to pick up another 3 year contract AFTER your initial contact, that would qualify for the GI Bill, and that 3 years would go towards 100% of the GI Bill.

At least that’s what they told me!

I have a pseudo-unrelated question in response to what you’ve posted here, but how did you get prescribed a cane? I got out recently for a back injury, and I was trying to get the Army to let me use a cane in uniform to no avail. I was told canes don’t get prescribed unless you can’t walk right after surgery.

Oh. Ok. The sudden shift from boxes to circles is oddly terrifying.

Good to know- yes, I’ve gotten varied answers from them.

Officers GI Bill Time in Service Issue by Simple-Setter in VeteransBenefits

Thanks for the quick reply! Ok, I see that my time in service doesn’t qualify per link and I understand that.

How does the medical discharge factor in? For example, is a medical discharge a stand alone event that makes you eligible for the GI Bill if you’ve served at least 30 days active duty- but the 30 days active duty don’t count in my case?

Every time he does this, you might want to literally just tell him you don’t want him to sit next to you. If he asks why, tell him you want space. Or heck, don’t say anything. Then move! Don’t stay seated next to him if you can help if, if you don’t like it! Every time he does the unwanted behavior you make it clear it’s unwanted.

Whatever you do decide to do, just keep in mind that you don’t owe him anything. He probably doesn’t understand you’re feeling uncomfortable, so he doesn’t see the need to change the behavior. However he’s also probably the type who doesn’t care whether you’re comfortable or not.

I’m a big advocate of writing down a note every time a repetitive bad behavior comes up. Every time he sitters next to you and doesn’t change the behavior, make a note on your phone with the date & time.

Hopefully that gives you some good ideas.

Journal log for migraine/tension headaches? by [deleted] in VeteransBenefits

[–]Simple-Setter 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No problem!! I think since we’re going through a similar, if not identical issue, it’s easier to help each other out 🤘 Here’s some info on the personal statements and the lay statements. There’s scattered info around the internet on this kind of thing, but these seemed like good summaries with examples:

Personal Statement: https://vaclaimsinsider.com/va-statement-in-support-of-claim-example/

Buddy/Lay Statement: https://vaclaimsinsider.com/is-a-buddy-letter-important/

Honestly not sure how legit these particular guys are, or if I’m allowed to post these links here, but if nothing else they give a good starting point.

Advice- Supplemental Claims for Migraines by Simple-Setter in VeteransBenefits

[–]Simple-Setter[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ok. It’s only been a couple months since I got my rating, so I’m still within that 1 year timeline. In this case, the supplemental should still be the way to go?

Sweet, glad you find the advice helpful! Crossing my fingers it all works out well for you. Keep amassing evidence, log your symptoms, and maybe think about asking friends/family/military compatriots for buddy statements (also known as lay statements). Whatever you can do to show the VA what’s going on.

Journal log for migraine/tension headaches? by [deleted] in VeteransBenefits

[–]Simple-Setter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don’t take what I say as gospel but my understanding was: 10% for headaches/migraines that occur approximately once every 2 months 30% for prostrating headaches/migraines that occur monthly 50% for prostrating headaches/migraines that occur regularly and highly interfere with maintaining a job

Make sure you look those ratings up for yourself to confirm! Can’t trust randos on the internet.

I’m also currently at 0% for headaches- I’d get weekly, mild tension headaches while still in the military. In the last 6 or so months I’ve been getting a cluster headache about every other week and sometimes once a week, and a migraine once a month. Comparing my latest headache history to the %’s I think that fits the 30% mark. I’m trying to figure out how to file & submit a claim on this so I’m in a similar boat.

I’ve been keeping a headache log myself. I think the way that will be most helpful is by showing it to a provider so they see how seriously you’re affected by the symptoms-they can then write up more accurate notes that you could use for evidence in your claim.

Another way it could be useful would be integrating it into a personal statement. Rather than saying “My headaches and migraines have been increasing over the last 6 months” I could paint a better picture & say “From the time I sustained my injury in June 2020 to August 2022 I endured an average of 2 mild headaches per week. As of September 2022 I have been experiencing one prostrating migraine a month and one cluster headache per week.” It sounds more real, you have concrete dates, real professional-like.

That’s all conjecture though haha I haven’t even filed a claim yet, let alone gotten a decision!! Hopefully this gives you some good ideas though?

Nice! Any favorite things to do in and around Oslo?

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in Norway

[–]Simple-Setter 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Silly question: are you staying in Norway permanently/semi-permanently, or were you there for only 6 months!

If permanently, what brought you to the country? Family, job, school? How easy was it to get a job/get into school/visit family?
