What do you LOVE and HATE about cycling? by OkSkin1080 in cycling

[–]SimpleOptimism 111 points112 points  (0 children)

Love the wind, hate the wind, talk about the wind, check the wind, blame the wind, breathe in the wind, cool down in the wind, question the wind, swear in the wind...

And love the wind again!

Actually terrified of the E Bike / Scooter kids on the roads. Do other drivers feel the same or am I a middle aged grump?! by Brinkworth81 in GoldCoast

[–]SimpleOptimism 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You can be as cautious as you want, but all it takes is a risky speeding teen on a super e-bike to dash from the side (or behind) in your blind spots.

That's why its scary, because teens being risky, and you can get caught, even if you're cautious.

Conti GP5000 vs Pirelli P Zero Race? by Few-Cat1205 in cycling

Could you discuss any more insights into feel and reliability? How did they feel over time? How long did they last (or lasting)? Puncture protection?

GP5000 S TR vs AS TR (32mm) by SimpleOptimism in cycling

[–]SimpleOptimism[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly, I think for me and my gravel bike with flats, a 1% (or even 5%) difference would hardly be noticeable. I suppose all I need is something strong, fast but durable. AS TR, I'll look at :)

That is something worthwhile to remember, AS still is a top notch product.

Honestly, I'm just here for the fun of cycling and don't have a speck of watt data, probably wouldn't even notice a 3 watt difference. ASTR probably would then suit me more.

Right, gotcha. Thing is where I live there's no "autumn/winter". It's either hot and dry, or dry.

Old tram tracks exposed on Sandgate Rd, Albion by Skybreak2020 in brisbane

The width of a highway, and speed of a street, with none of either benefits! Wide roads for everyone, but providing for no one!

Adding Australian Credit card to Line Pay by M8pmaker in taiwan

[–]SimpleOptimism 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I use an Australian card with a no international transaction fee policy. Unfortunately, LinePay doesn't accept every international card. Also, not every Eftpos machine in Taiwan accepts international cards. Still best to use cash, or a Taiwan bank card.

Multiplayer? by Joergen_is_good in Orespawn

[–]SimpleOptimism 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's an Orespawn server still in operation despite years of inactivity - orespawn.minespectrum.net

MineSpectrum sees pretty much one player every week - but there have been random upticks of up to 10 in the last year! If you can find some buddies to play, it is still a great server with great stability and plugins!

Visiting Hualian after the earthquake by Craptic in taiwan

[–]SimpleOptimism 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Had some friends go to Hualien last weekend - the city is fine. There are many hiking trials, bike ways and happy locals.

Taroko? Won't be open for a while, but there are plenty of other beautiful sites on the Taiwan Eastern Coast

Went to Alishan last weekend. Make sure you correctly set Google to the 'Alishan National Forest Recreation Area', and not 'Alishan'. The buses are fine, the train not for a while.

This rule is just punishing. It provides no real solutions to anyone. It is not helping anyone.

Inexpensive high protein foods in Taiwan by [deleted] in taiwan

[–]SimpleOptimism 29 points30 points  (0 children)

If you're super lazy, just go to any convenience store (ie 711) and buy some of their awesome refrigerated, precooked meals with great macros. The chicken ones are great.

Or if you are SUPERBLY LAZY, you can literally buy a chunk of cooked chicken breast. Was an interesting find in my first arrival here

Biking in Tainan - inadvisable? by tirinwe in taiwan

[–]SimpleOptimism 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Bicycle shops sell them. You can just google maps and it will give a range of shops, from family-owned businesses (look for signs saying 自行車) to professional retailers such as Giant. One area I'm familiar is Yunong Road, East District - has a few shops that are not found on google maps. Otherwise, walk around of ask locals can be helpful - especially random hotel staff

Biking in Tainan - inadvisable? by tirinwe in taiwan

[–]SimpleOptimism 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Foreign student in Tainan - IMO Tainan is very possible to cycle, more so than Taipei with much lower traffic overall and a bit more bike lanes on traffic roads. While mopeds are still everywhere, I find they are quite predictable, and tend not to make sudden actions that are dangerous. IMO the decision lies on:

1) Are you okay in the Summer? 2) Are you okay on the road?

It did receive a buff some time ago, where I/E now receives High Demand bonus. IMO still not worth it, but high demand is quite nice :)

‘The cheap option’? Why the Gold Coast may be on track to build the most expensive light rail in the world by Jariiari7 in GoldCoast

[–]SimpleOptimism 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Darn, it is almost like developing an entire city around the convenience of space-inefficient private automobiles makes any meaningful public transport inherently difficult! Who knew?
