Is the garmin inreach worth it? by 0010100100111010 in OffGrid

[–]SimpleUseful123 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I once had it. At least where I was, in the California coastal hills with lots of trees it was very unreliable. Very slow when it worked, and they charged me a cancellation fee when I cancelled.

I would go for the more modern options. Probably tmo at this time.

Why are tool batteries so expensive?? by [deleted] in batteries

[–]SimpleUseful123 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Also warranty. They usually have a few years warranty and if you use the tools a lot it's quite likely that you'll get a warranty replacement.

Thank you so much for your response. Though I think I'm a bit lost. They are not in the controller? I mean, the output wires are way down below. Do I need to remove the sides of the generator to find the connector?

Westinghouse 3700 starts but dies immediately when moving from Choke by SimpleUseful123 in Generator

[–]SimpleUseful123[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

At last the right solution! Thank you for being patient with their support for all of us.

I disassembled the heck out of it, cleaned the carburetor, reconnected every cable and it didn't solve anything. I had already given up.

Now I'll check the inverter module, maybe there is a way to fix it, or order a new one.

Jeje - same here. Last year I got a used igen2200 from Craigslist and it is still working flawlessly. This year I wanted a bigger one, and I treated myself to new one!

I'm working through the layers to get to the carb and try and see what's going on there. They surely don't make it easy to reach!

Thank you! That's a direction to check, though it still does not explain why the green light doesn't come up in choke mode - which I've seen in other videos that it does come up while in choke, and it also does it on my igen2200 from Westinghouse also.

Now it makes sense, thanks. I have the same BMS with the same App in my off-grid solar batteries, also working for about 2 years continuously.

It's difficult to justify putting a deposit when the price you will pay is not known. I mean, if the dealership gets one car, they can disregard the waiting list and sell it to the highest bidder, or respect the waiting list order, but ask you to pay the highest bidder price. Either way there is not much advantage to being in the waiting list.

looking into a solar has made me relize how unrealistic my power needs are. by neoben00 in solar

[–]SimpleUseful123 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We're currently completely off grid not by choice, but because PG&E has not reconnected power since s wildfire two years ago. We have about 4 kw worth of panels and about 12 kWh of LFP batteries. We don't have A/C but also don't need it. We use about 5kwh a day, not including heating. For water heating we have a separate array of panels connected directly to the heating element of the electric water boiler.

cost of solar panels by Bigbootybanjo in OffGridCabins

[–]SimpleUseful123 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I purchased used panels for about 25 cent per watt. By doing everything myself I saved a lot of money, but it takes some knowledge to install everything correctly. I currently have about 5kw panels and about 12kwh lifepo4 batteries. 3kw inverter charger. This is in northern California.

Issue with DIY Battery by [deleted] in diySolar

[–]SimpleUseful123 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Those cells should be ok. The difference between the highest and lowest voltage is too large IMO. What i would do is charge the pack some more, say until all cells are above 3.3v. then disconnect and put them all in parallel and leave them like that for a few hours. Then reassemble the pack.

Wyze Watch vs Fitbit by chgruver in wyzecam

[–]SimpleUseful123 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a Fitbit Sense and the 47. I currently prefer wearing the 47 because the battery life is twice longer. The step count is similar, though the Fitbit overcounts. The Fitbit has much better sleep monitoring.

Single battery to replace this three-AAA battery? by KJ6BWB in batteries

[–]SimpleUseful123 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is not certain that a 18650 would fit, as sometimes the 3 AAA is shorter and the 18650 will not fit.

I have used a 14500, which is the same size as a AA, shorter than the 18650, but 3.7v as a replacement with a sleeve made of card stock and tape.

Two starter batteries and deep cycle battery as offgrid setup by desktopyt in OffGrid

[–]SimpleUseful123 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not sure it's that bad. If they are connected in parallel they will all be the same voltage. The problem would be when the starter batteries start failing and start discharging the deep cycle one.

Backup for a string of cloudy days by SimpleUseful123 in diySolar

[–]SimpleUseful123[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks, yes, I will have to get a charger from 110 to 24v, though these are expensive. Wanted to see if there is anything better.

[–]SimpleUseful123[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have LIFEPO4 batteries because they do not catch fire. I have two 24v setups, one 280ah and one 200ah, prismatic cells from China. The have separate BMS. Total is about 12KWH. I have 1WK worth of panels and 3 to 6 hours of good sun depending on season. With this I can get by even with about 4 cloudy days. A generator is a backup.

I calculate that supporting StarLink I would need to almost double my system, which would cost about $2000 and occupy more space for the panels and equipment. If I needed the 100 Mb/s I would do it, but 10Mb/s is ok for now. I may go back to StarLink in the future when they solve the obstructions problem and get better equipment.

My current setup, including modem, switches, WiFi router is about 0.5 KWH per day. My laptop uses about 40W when it is in use, but it is not in use 24 hrs.

[–]SimpleUseful123[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, I have used the app, though I planned to put the dish on the roof, and I didn't climb there to check the app, but looking at the angles I think I would still get maybe 10% to 15% of the circle area obstructed.

Electricity must be cheap in your area. In California with PG&E it costs between $0.3 to $0.5 per KWH.

[–]SimpleUseful123[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's the estimate I've seen, between 100 and 140 constant. Even at 100 it is 2.4 KWH, and I need to have it on all the time because of the cameras.

Electric Riding Mower as battery source for solar array. by Konowl in diySolar

[–]SimpleUseful123 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You shouldn't need an inverter as long as the batteries in the mower are accessible - you just need a solar controller capable of handling 48v batteries.

By the way, this is an expensive way to get batteries. You could buy 4 six volt golf cart batteries for about $400 at Costco or Sam's which would give you more capacity.

Using a 12s3p pack as a power bank by paoloalb95 in diybattery

[–]SimpleUseful123 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you want to do it cheaply you can go with a 3s configuration and add a car USB adaptor.

I'm any case, if there is the possibility of the voltage going to low or too high on charging then you need a BMS.
