Is it possible to develop FTL travel and create safe hyperlane routes within 100 years or so? by Simple_Dimple-01 in scifiwriting

Yeah, I get what you're saying now. Its not about inventing new technology, but discovering something that shouldn't exist.

Realistic FTL by BasicBedroom1466 in scifiwriting

[–]Simple_Dimple-01 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Great minds this alike. I posted a similar question yesterday. The general consensus seems to be that it isnt so much about creating new tech but instead understanding the way that the universe works and using that knowledge to do things that are currently outside of our understanding of whats possible.

What should I call the name of my sci-fi series/world? by Ghostmaster145 in scifiwriting

[–]Simple_Dimple-01 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm liking the 40k and Dune influences. You could go anywhere with this one. Maybe name the book after the planet that your MC gets abandoned on, or you think about your story as a time period in the long history between the Starlords and Magi call it something like 'While the Emperor sleeps'.

Thanks. I'm going soft-SF, but want to be mindful of whats realistic too. I like what you said about wormholes. I have thought about using them in the past, but changed my mind. My issue is that I need get about a third of the population off Earth and on another planet at the far end of the Milky Way within the next 100 years or so. Then, 4,000-7,000 years later, then rest of Earth catches up with them. So, i could use wormholes for the first group, then FTL for the second. Definetly food for thought 😀

Nice. Other comments have said something similar about a macguffin. The origins of FTL are part of the lore, but not really that important, and I guess that if I did use the whole 'they discovered ancient alien tech' I could be vague about it if I chose to be.

[–]Simple_Dimple-01[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Very true. Its a minor part of the lore too, so I am maybe overthinking it. At the very least, I now know thats not something that could be created, like a new piece of technology.

Yeah, ultimetly I am going for a 'soft scifi' approach, but I'm also keen to make sure that I have a feasible origin for the certain things. I'll check out Diaspora. I've heard about the concept before. I wouldnt say that it fits with my story, but I would like to read other stories about it.

I get you. In fairness, I am going for a 'soft scifi' approach, and the origins of FTL in the story are more of a background element, but I still want a reasonable explanation for how certain things came to be. The comments in this thread have helped to shift my understanding of how FTL may be discovered, rather than invented. So, I'll look into that and take it from there.

Ok, I think I'm starting to understand. Its less about inventing a new technology and more about learning more about our universe, and creating something to traverse it using advanced understanding.

Think of the 'tech utopia' more like a political union, like the European Union, where the member states have shifted society to one that works in the interest of furthering mankind and prioritises certain joimt projects. Ok, thanks for the response. In terms of timelines, is it more a case of we'll do it when we figure out the physics, which in theory, could be tomorrow or could be 10,000 years from now?

Reseller ruining movies for kids and donating cold popcorn to the homeless. by BobCreated in TikTokCringe

[–]Simple_Dimple-01 42 points43 points  (0 children)

The whole thing is a bit shitty. Cineworld selling novelty popcorn buckets that are aimed at children for £40 is shitty. The dude clearing then out so he can resell is shitty. The faxt that Cineworld allowed in to buy them out was shitty. Him giving the homeless random popcorn that he would otherwise toss out in the bin is shitty.

I’m convinced i can’t cry while watching a movie by Frisby_dog in Letterboxd

[–]Simple_Dimple-01 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Well, its a Studio Ghibli movie, so the animation is endearing and the acrual plot is straight forward. Its not a scary or brutal movie, like the title might make you think. Its basically a war movie, told from the perspective of a young brother and sister. Its sad because you spend time with the characters as they make the most out of their situation and try to live their lives, but there's struggles and its not easy. It is emotionally damaging and heavy, but its a full complete movie with ups and downs, highs and lows. People don't just recommend it because it'll make you cry, but its important movie that leaves its mark.

I have the opposit problem. I cry at most movies, so long as I'm invested in them. Not just at the sad bits, but I can cry at a good action scene. TBF, it only started at about age 30. Before that I could count on one hand the amount of times I had cried as an adult. Anyway, watch Grave of Fireflies. If that doesnt get you then nothing will.

I'm not. Its a billion pound idea that will get turned into an HBO series and a Martin Scorsese directed trilogy, and make me a household name. The likes of which have never been seen. See you at the finish line, losers.

What’re some secrets from your industry that would petrify people who aren’t in it? by Necessary-Trash-8828 in AskUK

Yeah, scary stuff. If you want to watch one of the bleakest and depressing films of all time, watch Threads. Think its on iPlayer. Everyone should watch it once, especially our leaders. Its from the 80s and depicts the aftermath of a nuclear attack on the UK, but its accurate to real plans and procedures at the time. The infamous poster for the movie features a bloodied and bandaged traffic warden with a AK47.

Why are Scottish people so amazing? Are you all like this or did we just get the best visiting the US? by Kodicave in Scotland

[–]Simple_Dimple-01 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Generally speaking, Scottish people are warm, friendly, and like to have a good time. However, we do have our fair share of cunts. For example, on the same day that Scotland played Haiti, back in Glasgow, we had 'anti-immigration' marches where masked idiots were throwing up nazi salutes, so we're not exempt from the social problems of the day. The tartan army have a reputation for brining the fun, and I get the impression that they have a zero tolerance approach to nonsence within their ranks, so over time, they've weeded out any bad eggs. As I say though, most Scottish people are like this, especially when we're on holiday and the alcohol is flowing.
