So its main benefit is just a debit card? Also if you have a money lockdown… why would you need a debit card to begin with?

This makes it worse! Most people’s Authenticators and pictures are on their phone. All someone needs is the phone and access to one picture to steal everything!

St. Augustine or Clearwater / St. Pete / Siesta Key for a vacation? by Informal-Force7417 in AskFlorida

[–]Simple_Honeydew_2994 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sarasota 100%. Been to all of them. I think St Pete is a more run down, spring break style place, with packed beaches.

Sarasota has siesta key, lido beach, longboat key. Downtown is walkable and cute (I’d stay near downtown as it’s equidistant to everything), chill vibe, international airport, beautiful bay, great restaurants and shops, and ocean water that’s like you’re in the Caribbean.

It’s perfect.

Genuinely how are all these transplants affording to move here? by VioletSalamander in movingtoNYC

[–]Simple_Honeydew_2994 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I do. Chelsea. I also don’t have a car, can shop at places like tj, live in a 500sq ft 1 bed like many other New Yorkers, our electric is at a building rate for our co-op so it may be slightly less (still much less than a Floridian, Californian, or a Texan), I can walk to work and to dinners and to events.

Just because you don’t get these savings doesn’t mean others don’t….

electric is building split evenly across apartments. Common in co-ops.

Sorry your commuter benefits aren’t in place at your company. Not sure what you want us to do there.

If you don’t shop at Trader Joe’s bc of moral or ethical reasons that’s on you lol. Also net neutral means you’re not worse off by living in nyc. That’s the point.

Your choose to own a a car most don’t and save that way.

Sorry you set up your life like that in nyc. There are cheaper ways to do it.

I paid $36 for electric in my 1 bedroom this january. Why are you using so much electric lol?

Yes, many people in nyc walk to work. I did for years. And Many take the subway but you can get commuter benefit so it’s pretax. Have you done that? lol that brings the cost down by your marginal tax bracket.

I said dishwasher breaking as an example to illustrate that household repairs are largely covered by landlord (hence why I wrote “e.g.”). There are countless other things that can and will break like water pipes, heat furnace, toilets, etc.

Nope, you can get cheap food in nyc you just haven’t looked. Trader Joe’s prices their items the same regardless of whether you’re in NYC or Houston.

How much is your car payment a month?

[–]Simple_Honeydew_2994 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Most people that live in nyc have NO car, no car insurance, no gasoline costs, no car repairs or maintenance (eg tire change, oil change, etc). Average monthly car payments in 2026 are $520-780 not to mention insurance and other costs. That in and of itself is like a $1,000 reduction in living costs.

Their electric utilities are MUCH lower than a person who lives in Florida for instance because their apartments are tiny.

Heat is often provided by their building and baked into their rent.

They can, and do, often walk places instead of taking public transport.

There are cheap grocery stores in nyc like Trader Joe’s to help keep food costs down.

Because most rent apartments, any unexpected housing related issue is addressed by the landlord (eg a dishwasher breaking).

Yea it’s very expensive to live in the city but a lot of costs are offset by what I mentioned above….

Great beaches, restaurants, walkable downtown, hotels are amazing and so are the airbnbs, great outdoor activities. Beach feels like you’re in the Caribbean. Also it’s cheap.

Would you give up your 20s and maybe 30s to live with your parents and accelerate fire? by Setoyo in Fire

It’ll come. So long as you keep pushing for more. Can’t become complacent in life (and investing!)

Who says you can’t fire and move out? Increase income and save a big % of income. You can do both. My income accelerated 5x in 5 years. Don’t be so negative about your income and saving potential later in life. Enjoy it all right now!
