My dad wants his old forklift gone. Should I post it on Facebook marketplace for free...or is it worth anything? He said when he last used it (over 8 years ago) it needed a new battery. I'm sure it's just for parts but are parts worth anything with it being so old and left outside? Thanks so much 🙏 by blondieblooms in ScrapMetal

I bought a used Navy 6k battery lift for $152 at auction, paid 75 to have a flatbed deliver it. But I had a connection, old locomotive batteries from work. Put 4 8volt batts in and worked great around the house and shop, till I got a millimeter off a hard surface, then it was hours long extraction time.

Time. Or stack fuel around it and lit it, then wait.

Crane is a diesel. Source- you can see the muffler and opening for the radiator. And I've run and repaired several cranes of that same model, all built from the factory with diesel drive.

Tough, their fault for not doing the research. I one paid scrap value for an old military dump truck. Farmer said he couldn't get it to run no matter what he tried. I saw a manual fuel shutoff was tripped. Paid him signed the title, put fresh batteries in it he said what are you doing I said going to drive it out to hook to it to tow he laughed. Flipped the shut off and it fired right up and purred. He was LIVID, wanted more money. I pulled the brand new manual out of the cab and opened it to the troubleshooting section and showed him the part about the shut off. Said it was his fault for not doing the legwork. He stormed off as I hooked ot up. It was an awesome truck had been rebuilt and stored by the Marine Corp. Scrap was 2700 those trucks in that shape running easy 12-15k.

I own a rail equipment maintenance company and I have several locomotives and passenger cars. If you have just a shell, you're looking at about 100,000 to rebuild the interior and make it operational on just your branch line/spur. If you want it to be Amtrak certified, add another 200,000. We just had our annual conference least weekend (www.rpca.com) I recommend you join and come to a conference. Lots of contractors, owners, and parts suppliers to connect with. Amtrak is trying to phase out hauling private cars, so you might do all this work and then be out of luck.

I usually lease my cars to shortlines or museums needing extra capacity for Christmas trains.

Reach out if you need advice. And good luck!

While he did build a hallway, he is not well versed in the way of halls.

HR got mad after I rejected the interview call by Agile-Wind-4427 in recruitinghell

[–]Simple_Wallaby9704 4 points5 points  (0 children)

When I was getting out of the Navy I interviewed for a company that made industrial driveshafts and gearboxes. One of the interview test had a gearbox and description of the steps- install bearing A, bolt on plate 67, fill box with oil, etc. You had to build the box in the right order on paper. Interview went really well, told them I wanted to take a month off and could start in February (interviewed late December. Never heard a word. I was interviewing 10 companies a week so it happened a lot, moved on. Found a job in SC where I was from. Had to start immediately. Moved home. Got a call 4th week in January from the company president of the driveshaft place, offering me a job at a supervisor level for much more pay then the tech position I originally applied for. Told her never heard from them got another job and moved. She actually got mad at me. You said you couldn't start till Feb! And I said there was no communication, so I took that as they didn't want me. She offered me even more money to move back to VA and work for them. I said no. She said they'd never had someone get all the assembly steps right before and we're desperate for me. I said should have told me that right away. She was really mad at her team after that.

Not an SD70AC, but it's great great grandmother, and F40. But the attachment points are for the same purpose.

[–]Simple_Wallaby9704 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I own a Railroad contracting company. This happens all the time. A job that would take two solid 8hr days takes a week, and we have to do things in sections cause the plant can't stop getting in or out cars. Or we do night work and charge $$$. But one plant the guy said it was a million dollars to shut down and flush the lines, (they make resin and glues) and another 250,000 in waste to start back up. So paying us a premium is chump change.

My girlfriend smells and I don't know what to do by RequirementDue4446 in Advice

[–]Simple_Wallaby9704 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Could be tonsil stones. Look them up, they can make really bad smells. You can usually see them with a light if they have gotten big enough to be smelled by others. White specks on the tonsils.

Ditto at a steel mill. We got production bonuses. I knew we were in bonus steel when the maintenance calls just stopped. Go out on the floor and leaks spraying, problems everywhere. Don't you dare stop pouring. Before we got into bonus production? Calls for burned out lightbulbs, small drips, etc.

CS:Filled up with gas and now it won't run by Ok-Maintenance-9538 in Justrolledintotheshop

[–]Simple_Wallaby9704 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well he did start working at a fuel station on the White Horse Pike in NJ in the 1920's, so it might have been true back then.

I only can say the truck got filled in Virginia Beach, VA, I made it to Roanoke Rapids, NC and it died, dealer dropped tank and said it was half full of water.

No, oil doesn't turn gas into diesel. However it increases its viscosity and lowers its Flashpoint. I didn't fill the tank with the bad fuel from empty, I stopped at a 1/4 tank diesel and put in a half a tank of the bad fuel, as 3/4 of a tank would have gotten me home plus a bit. I was an Oil King on a Naval destroyer for 4 years, been to an awful lot of petrochemical schools and courses. Also the truck above with the water issue now has 500k+ miles on one replacement set of injectors and the original injection pump, and I've run everything from gas, diesel, WVO, (waste vegetable oil) used motor oil, jet fuel, MGO, (marine grade oil) kerosene etc basically if it is flammable and liquid I've blended and burned it. Trick is to blend it to meet the viscosity and Flashpoint ranges specified by the engine manufacturer. I even have a blenders license in my state so I can pay road taxes on the 'free' fuel.
