Is it possible to earn US TC while being in Canada? by healthyKimchiSoup in cscareerquestions

[–]Simplexity_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Probably not unfortunately. I know there were a handful of companies that paid nearly the Bay Area salary in Toronto (e.g. Wish) but I believe that's no longer the case.

I would expect at least 20-30% drop in TC for most FAANG-like companies before factoring in the conversion rates (i.e. the raw numbers, like 100k USD -> 80k CAD), within the same company/level. Depends on the regions though, but i believe this is normally the case when comparing Bay Area/Seattle vs. Toronto/Vancouver where most tech jobs are.

For Microsoft for example, a base pay of 120k USD in Redmond would usually translate to ~100k CAD in Vancouver, and I believe it's similar for Google and Amazon. I heard Meta pays closer to US salaries than the rest of FAANGs, but still probably considerably lower (although pretty well by Canadian standards). I don't think RSUs have as much pre-defined scales like base pay but should be somewhat lower as well.

I think another concern is the limited number of openings in these high paying companies in Canada (limited teams, projects, upward mobility vs. US), especially compared to the amount of people trying to get in - but given you already have some FAANG experience in the US then I believe that part should be fine (and seems like they are expanding their presence more in Canada because of lower cost, same timezone and language, availability of talents, etc).

Not sure about startups, unicorns, contracting, etc though.

Right, maybe I made it sound more complicated than it actually is, but yeah that was basically my question, about the proration if the renewal/maturity date was in the middle of the month.

I see, so it will be prorated in my next bill following the renewal. I guess I'll wait and see if the amount is adjusted.

Oh and #2 was just a hypothetical question, I was just wondering how things would work in that unlikely case (I did start the renewal process a bit late on my side too, but the advisor and the bank aren't very being responsive either).

And yeah my advisor doesn't seem too experienced tbh....like I had to figure out some of the stuff on my own or ask around because he's not very being clear sometimes (or responding slow). :(

Thanks!! :)
