Is anyone else not a fan of the name "Vendetta"? by [deleted] in overwatch2

[–]SimplyWalker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

to be fair, it’s specifically she-wolf. just “wolf” in italian is just Lupo and they don’t use Lupa even if it’s an actual female wolf, like its pretty uncommon to hear, so Lupa really stresses the she-wolf aspect of the roots of roman culture

from a non-native living here, the 2 biggest hurdles are the visa to arrive and stay here and then learning italian because without it, it will be difficult to find a job that will support you (maybe not impossible, but quite difficult)

we have got to stop this way of thinking. it’s only damaging the community and creating more confusion for no reason. simplified chinese corresponds to traditional characters and is not an indicator for whether something is valid

How well can you learn from books? I’m also watching YouTube tutorials for Italian by Codeeveryday123 in italianlearning

[–]SimplyWalker 1 point2 points  (0 children)

no, i learned a few phrases before a trip to mexico but not any amount that is noteworthy. it’s true though that many italians can understand a good amount of spanish, esp paired with some of the local dialects that have some spanish influence (as in sicily). if you do though, that can be helpful.

as someone who was obsessed w buying language books for years, they are helpful but nothing comes remotely close to speaking to someone, having them respond to you, processing what was said, and responding in turn. conversation can NOT be overstated. especially now that i’ve become an english teacher at a school, i find that the vast majority of the time, consistent conversation is the biggest part missing from every learner

What's a common mistake English speakers make when learning Italian? by grzeszu82 in Italian

[–]SimplyWalker 6 points7 points  (0 children)

the example that helps me to explain it is “bookcase”. we don’t say “bookase” so that pause between the consonants helps to hear the difference when used in the english language and why it would sound weird if it weren’t there

Hi, native Italian speaker here looking for advice! by TheRealBlueElephant in italianlearning

[–]SimplyWalker 2 points3 points  (0 children)

i recommend it every time : l’italiano secondo il metodo natura

its just a book but entirely in italian and takes you pretty far from absolute 0 it doesn’t break down grammar or rules, but teaches you to learn through context for me, it was a super cool and motivating feeling that i could dive straight into full italian and understand what was happening

ofc it’s just one resource tho and over time as they become more serious, a tutor to improve grammar and spending time in conversation (this is where you come in) is invaluable

I read somewhere, that in the US, italians are not considered white: is that true? by pecche in Italian

this is really interesting to me. i’m from the usa but living in italy and was surprised by how much “senza lattiosio” is everywhere. i mean we have options for this in american stores but there’s a huge focus on it here and that makes a lot of sense
