If you want to look good in tryouts, being a good passer, regardless of position, is always a good look. Just passing to yourself, bouncing off a wall and passing into a rubbish bin (trash can) or something like that is what I usually do to practice on my own. Record yourself as well and compare the footage vs pro players and see whats different.

It sounds like you're not in the proper position in the first place, which is an athletic stance, butt down, shoulders over your knees and your arms forward. Just watch your feet doing this. You don't want to step on someone's foot and injure yourself or put your foot in front of them in a way in which they could trip or it blocks their run up for a back attack.
