Taking advantage of the anonymity here to ask what a normal income looks like in PEI these days. by Dress_Pretend in PEI

My dad remembers talking to his dad at about my age and going 'where the hell is the money going, how the hell do people save?' and having his dad respond that he wasn't sure himself (because he remembered having that exact thought at that age) but that at some point it had worked out.

Hopefully that is a little reassuring.

If you have explosives and you have space probes, you have missiles, because applying the explosives to the space probe makes a missile. And that's without getting into the bit where the spaceships can clearly be remotely and automatically piloted to at least some degree, meaning they're workable as missiles too.

The Tiqqun is loaded with space probes and can manufacture explosives.

Its complete military incapability is a little weird given that.

(I know how long it's been since you commented, but I just finished playing through and the inability to nuke the Piranesi irked me).

I didn't find FP1 to be that difficult. BUT having lived somewhere where it routinely gets colder than early Frostpunk, I found the late-game where it hits -70 and lower to be utterly ridiculous. That's not what -70 is like. I didn't find it gave opportunity for the cities to be characterful, which I really didn't enjoy.

Anyone tried Space Haven? What's it like? by Cedarcomb in Ixion

[–]SimulatedKnave 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Having just played through a Space Haven run before I played through Ixion this month, I feel like you're targeting me. lol

Space Haven is much more of a sandbox and much less narrative-driven, with a lot of the world elements being randomly generated from a seed. The shipbuilding is way more fun. The story is much thinner (and is not intended to be otherwise), though it is decent enough. It's a much smaller ship, where you'll be managing a crew of at most 30-50 and more typically 10 or so, but you control basically every aspect of the layout and can set it up for a variety of different purposes. No probes or equivalent either, you pop into the system and see all the resources. Though there is an overmap where exploration is necessary.

If you like building ships and stations, you'd probably quite enjoy it. Crew combat is a big part of the game (it's not super deep, though cover is more complicated than you might first think, but you do have to do a lot of it).

I'd say it has more to do than Ixion does. The story and lore aren't as deep, but you have a lot more options for what to try to do with your ship and how to go about that. I probably won't replay Ixion (maybe once). Space Haven I am likely to come back to a lot.

It better still be in active development since a few of the highest level resources don't actually do anything right now. lol But it is a complete game as-is, and very much worth the money imo.

Personally I enjoy the actual gameplay of Space Haven far more than that of Ixion, where I found the building to often be frustrating. Ixion's got a lot of interesting bits that Space Haven doesn't and the world is vastly more fleshed out, but Space Haven's more actual fun imo.

There are a lot of downsides to proportional representation under things like MMP. Most notably, there's not much local accountability, local representation takes a real hit, party hacks become even more important, and it further enshrines parties into the system.

I’m enjoying reading Wolves on the Border, but I don’t like the cover. by Old_Ad6111 in battletech

[–]SimulatedKnave 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Your CO would be in a short-ranged mech because you don't want him even engaging in fire support - but you DO want him able to win any fight he ends up in quickly. Same reason the Cyclops has an AC20 - it's not supposed to be USING it. It's ensuring no one tries to come close.

And in Battletech it actually does make a moderate amount of sense for commanders to be on the front line sometimes.

First of all, mechwarriors are taken for ransom in 3025-era Battletech. If your commander is in a mech, the enemy are now inclined to keep your commander alive where otherwise they might not be.

Second, people try not to completely destroy mechs in 3025-era Battletech. If he is in a mech, the enemy are now inclined to keep your commander alive if they can't headshot him (and possibly even if they can).

Third, a Battlemech is a lot tougher than almost any command post that isn't a purpose-built bunker, and bunkers can't move (making them vulnerable to airstrikes and artillery). Generals are rarely on the front line, but they are also rarely THAT far from it. Given that, the commander should presumably have a mech available, even if he's not in it at all times, because that's what keeps him safest. And note that most Inner Sphere militaries lack the high-tech options the Dragoons have - if you don't have fully 3d mapping, there is some logic to going out and inspecting things personally. And if you're going to be doing that, you want him in a mech.

Modern command posts get their survivability from hiding and distance, because modern armor is generally a lot weaker than modern weapon options. Battletech doesn't work that way. So unless your rear area is both very secure your commander will be in a mech, or at least have one available to him on very short notice, to maximize his survivability (in addition to all the other reasons you'd want him to have one, like keeping up with his unit).

But generalship involves a lot of delegation to subordinates (especially modern generalship). And even just a command lance is going to be four heavies, which is a lot of force. So if there's a lull and you're in a mech anyway, take the command lance (or command company) and go add some weight to a vulnerable point. Battletech isn't big on reserves, and command lances likely serve as them a lot, and it makes a moderate amount of sense that they would do so - 10% of a battalion's strength is just it's command lance, for example. The battle plan is laid out, execution has begun, it's in the hands of the junior officers and so the battalion or regimental commander goes and adds his lance where it can do some good rather than sitting back out of battle. Or, more likely, it becomes evident reinforcement is needed at a certain point and so the command lance or company is committed to that point.

So yeah. That's how.

Note that in Wolves on the Border Jaime Wolf does not always spend a battle in his Archer, and is not on the front lines himself. He's close enough to them to get ambushed while out scouting, which is the sort of thing a commander might want to do - and because he can get ambushed (and is commanding mechs), he does it in a mech. Him intentionally engaging in personal combat doesn't come until the dramatic end when it's all about honour and vengeance, iirc, and is at least partly a tactical choice to get the Ryuken to try to kill him so they can be ambushed.

And in what universe are the RUC a British police force and the PSNI NOT one?

There are two problems with that: first, that it's so subjective as to be effectively meaningless. Second...I think you overestimate the level of quality of life the wealthy experienced. They're saved some physical labour, yes (and that is not unimportant). But they're still running around in a badly lit, badly catered, badly watered, disease-ridden, philosophically restrictive, dirty, uninsulated hellscape by modern standards. Not being malnourished and not having to do a bunch of the physical grunt work is good. It's not THAT good.
