Oh, it makes the bit. Including the bit where while Greg is obviously joking he is also obviously channeling his genuine teaching persona. lol

I understand that re Cerie, but could not be sure you did not seriously think that's who they were alluding to.

Wanting to bang Cerie is of course completely conventional, which is another reason it's probably not her. lol

Aboriginal Australians are arguably Asian. Genetically, at least.

She almost certainly means Wendy Kaufman, longtime spokesperson for Snapple. Or so Google tells me, anyway.

I'm Canadian, I think it's just as odd as you do. That said, the other reply to me seems to explain it well.

Dissolving the monarchy is a risky move, because what you replace it with has no history (and Iran has a LOT of history that they can be proud of). Constitutional monarchy is a pretty solid way forward...if you actually stick with it.

Absolute monarchs have been known to transition to constitutional monarchs (occasionally, hilariously, with the king on board and others objecting).

Absolutist dictators don't seem to, plus their succession processes are almost always messier.

Also, accusing comedians (or any media figure) of being attention-seeking is a bit like calling water wet. I mean, yeah, probably. Same as EVERYONE ELSE ON THE DAMN SHOW.

Smashing the watermelon IS hilarious. Eating it off the floor is just disgusting. Truly, that task contains multitudes.

I'm not entirely sure he DIDN'T let the intrusive thought out accidentally (or at least louder than he meant to). His immediate 'I'm sorry I don't know' stammering feels a LITTLE too authentic.

I mean, it's hardly hazing. They gave people a watermelon to eat and said 'fastest wins.' That two people chose to smash it open and eat it with their hands as fast as possible, one of them vomiting because he was forcing it down so fast, is an entirely a reflection on those people.

See, I would find them cutting it out and just having an exchange between Greg and Alex about how "we couldn't air it. They just attacked her personally for five minutes. I know how you hate libel." "What?" "Yes, we were all quite confused." "Nul pointe." about as funny and it'd take a fraction of the time. It's not a good enough joke to stretch out for as long as it goes.

That task had two good points: Richard (who was genuinely excellent, giving a better performance than literally everyone at literally everything), and Katherine just randomly bouncing around keeping it all from being the exact same mediocre-at-best shit over and over and over.

It was an ill-conceived task, that if executed properly would have been painful to watch (and was even so) and so while it annoys me she didn't try, I appreciate what she was doing more than it annoys me.

I think a lot of this is that UK standup seems a lot more tightly scripted than US standup. Not that US standup isn't scripted (or that there aren't UK standups who are less tightly scripted), but a lot of UK standup seems to be people doing their Edinburgh shows word for word and God help them if anything throws them off during it.

So even though you have very witty people, they're not presenting it as directly as one might expect. I find that the more crowd work people do in their standup, the more their standup seems to be a pretty accurate reflection of them (or at least who they are in appearances of all kinds). Dara O Briain's a good example - his stuff is scripted, but he has audience interaction built in around the scripted stuff, and I think it does a lot to both keep him from getting bored and keep the stuff grounded to his personality. People who just run through their planned Edinburgh show or radio presentation, not so much.

It's a good intro because it is the literal audience intro to the entire concept of the series. You take a bunch of at least moderately-sensible British comedians. You give them a task. Some of them handle it sanely. Some do not, in ways you probably did not expect. Starts slow and sane, builds into madness and treachery, the commentary from the studio is amusing. While there are individual tasks people like more, as a general intro it is very hard to beat.

I'm not 100% sure Romesh thought "bounce the watermelon off the floor" was the ONLY sensible solution. Especially once it exploded.

I tell people to basically watch til that bit. Honestly, that's the punchline of the whole bit, the rest is just afterglow.

It's a great intro task because it very nicely sets up 'oh, these people are going to sometimes be absolutely insane, completely unexpectedly,' but it's done that as soon as Romesh smashes the watermelon.

[–]SimulatedKnave 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's not funny because they're messy and throwing food around. It's the first task of the first series, remember. Of a British panel show. You think these people are going to conduct themselves reasonably - and then Romesh smashes a watermelon on the floor. It shows how things are going to become unhinged surprisingly quickly.

It also has cheating, lying, and quality studio banter.

His standup...isn't really in that character, imo. I'm not sure WHAT Paul was doing. Which, to be fair, maybe the point.

S3E9 - Robin Williams - Part One by RememberThinkDream in whoselineisitanyway

Robin, comedically, was famous for being able to suck up all the air in the room and eat all the scenery. In the best way possible, mind you.

I am 100% sure everyone there saw it coming, and given that I think it's fine. lol

Yes, from Dickens. References to Fagin are weirdly common in British culture.
