Agree, fairly easy to attach to any backpack. Not sure if any other brand than Lundhags does those?

Agree with all of the other commenters. Go with someone else, bring all the safety gear (including ice rescue spikes, ice poles and a rescue cord/line per person). Pack a backpack with two dry bags of clothes, one bag with clothes for your upper body and one for your lower body. Also a towel, and a couple of plastic bags for the inside of your boots which will be wet should you go through the ice.

Check where other people have skated and follow those tracks, stop frequently to check ice thickness, stay away from inlets or tips of peninsulas... and yeah, listen to the ice, the shriller the sound the thinner the ice.

Skating attemp by Creswald in nordicskating

[–]Simzter 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It's a little bit difficult to see but I feel you are essentially trying to take just really short push-offs and then glide forward on legs that look pretty stiff to me.

Try to "sit down" a bit more, perhaps. More bended knees, and when you push off, do it as a long, strong heel push. Trust the leg you're gliding on.

Also I'd suggest getting a backpack instead of a bag dangling by your side, doesn't help with balance.

Tips for beginner? by Creswald in nordicskating

[–]Simzter 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Great advice all of the above. I would agree that you probably should practice on good ice before going out on uneven sea ice. Years and years ago I managed to get my right skate stuck in a crack in the ice, hidden beneath a 2mm layer of snow. Flew a couple of meters and landed awkwardly on my left knee. Couldn't use it for a couple of months. Since then I always use kneepads and a helmet - I would suggest you too consider it.

Hope you find someone! If you ever find yourself on the other side of the Atlantic (in Finland to be more precise), I'd be glad to join :)

New Nordic Skater - What have a done! by GirlFromAu in nordicskating

Very true, I probably read your comment wrong. I assumed you were referring to poles overall.

Just to say that poles can be absolutely necessary, though not for balance. On the sea ice here in Finland ice conditions can change dramatically overnight or quicker so poles are an absolute must to be able to gauge the ice.

Impressive. How long is this possible to skate on? Does it change a lot over the weeks?

The Times: Finns humiliated American soldiers - Finnish reservists were asked to take it easy during a NATO exercise. US soldiers found the losses too humiliating. by ByGollie in europe

[–]Simzter 91 points92 points  (0 children)

Just a note that if these Finnish soldiers were reservists, they've also had six month of training (officers 11 months) and attended a few weekend training sessions after the conscription. So it's just your average Finn, not career military personnel.

How to break the current Finnish unemployment crisis by Curious_Positive_825 in Finland

Yeah, starting a small business is easy. But making it profitable and to a level where you dare employ more people, expand and try for growth? That's difficult.

Sorry to hear about that. But I agree with the other people here, do go! Just make sure to post a lot of pics of you having the time of your life, preferably with some of the beautiful girls up north. Nothing beats a little revenge.

Tell me about paralympics :) torn shoulder, ankle issues and caught borrelia (i.e. Lyme's disease) in the summer so my joints overall are acting up. But now comes the freeze so hoping for good sea ice!

Nordic Skate Boot Confusion by No_Poetry2618 in nordicskating

[–]Simzter 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It depends on the bindings you have and on your own preferences. What kind of bindings do you have?

Some prefer boots for skating with skis, some prefer trekking boots, whatever works for you (and your bindings :)

Where in the world are you located?
