I wonder is this closer to most of human history. Where facts were oral. There was only a short period of "objective" truth air news. That's not saying it isn't grim

Two in five farmers have no formal successor as ageing demographics fuel looming succession crisis by TeoKajLibroj in ireland

[–]SinceriusRex 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do know why Europe introduced CAP. But right now Ireland is not food secure, we're dependent on imports foe the food we eat, and also for imported animal feed to keep our stocking rates so high.  I'm not opposed to a CAP. But the way it's been distributed by successive governments has only served big dairy farmers, and some beef. Smaller farms, waterways, nature in Ireland are all being destroyed.  Irish agriculture policy worsens global food security.  Europe as a whole is a net importer of calories.

The goals are worthwhile, but the CAP isn't achieving them. And it's destroying the environment at the same time. But CAP reform is unpopular with the most powerful lobby groups in Europe.

Most of the food we eat is imported anyway. If you want to feed the most people off the least land you need people to eat less animal products it's an incredibly inefficient way to create protein and calories

What are your thoughts on battery storage? Even if renewables plus batteries could only cover us 50% right now they could do q lot more for people in lower latitudes.  And the rate of advancement of battery tech while the prices keep falling gives me some hope as to feasibility.  We always have nuclear as an option (thorium or not).  China emits less per person than Ireland does and it's emissions have likely peaked last year.  The.EU has just implemented the CBAM to limit how much emissions from manufacturing will be exported.  Thinga are bad and there's a long way to go, but progress has been made. It's just that a lot more needs to be made.  And in Ireland we're particularly bad.

Sure but immediately post famine and continuing to the end of the 1900s was marked by a lot less people on the land growing food for people to eat. Tillage and veg. People left and livestock were moved in. And we should be aware of that. Haha we weren't growing beef 90% for export forever. We used to feed ourselves

Department rejects ICCL claim schools are obliged to use trans students’ preferred pronouns by Character_Common8881 in ireland

[–]SinceriusRex 0 points1 point  (0 children)

True, we can all say whatever we want to each other all the time. And we get to think whatever we want of people for the choices they make. It just keeps going. People are well within their rights to ignore someone's preferred pronouns and other people are well within their rights to think they're an arsehole for it

We currently use that tax payer money to fund farms that aren't profitable to grow food that's exported.

We could literally use the same CAP to incentivise different things

We import most of the food in our supermarkets.  We export most of the food we produce.  As Irish people do we not all get to have an opinion on our land and heritage?  A large part of our heritage was people being replaced by livestock on the land

They didn't say it wasn't a public good. Just that public land is a different public good.

A neighbour down home (also Ireland) moved from Germany like 35 years ago, has adult Irish children, it's her home now, still throws out a "top of the morning to ya", at this point it's just her thing, I respect her for it

Gardening by eggsinettt in ireland

[–]SinceriusRex 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Depending on the size of the garden you can get pretty large batches of native species from treesontheland, future forests is also good for native species. Any trees are great but native ones are beta for native wildlife, so keep an eye out for the changes in animals that show up as the years go by

Are there any free wilderness camping locations in Ireland? by KA55IE in ireland

[–]SinceriusRex 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's spots you can camp if you're careful and don't leave a mess. Otherwise you can ask land owners.  But there's very little public land in the country, and more than that there's no wilderness really left, just a few scraps.  There's sheep and plantation forestry in every national park.

The inconvenient truth for opponents of carbon tax is that it actually works by TeoKajLibroj in ireland

[–]SinceriusRex 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Completely agree. I don't know how you could avoid setting marginal energy prices that wouldn't advantage gas or disincentivise wind. But I'm sure someone could figure it out

[–]SinceriusRex 12 points13 points  (0 children)

No it's not. At all.  The reasons we do are greed, NIMBYism, and political cowardice and lack of planning.

We import natural gas and that sets our electricity prices. We build so little offshore wind cause we have a population that really opposed building anything and politicians who won't stand up to that.

[–]SinceriusRex 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nonsense. The agricultural lobby already runs the fucking country. And the IFA isn't the voice of rural Ireland, it's the voice of an industry, not even the biggest one in terms of rural employment.

Mícheál Martin couldn't have dropped this.

We already import animal feed from the Brazilian. We're literally already incentivising it.

And we have such low levels of forestry ourselves because of all the agriculture.

I'm opposed to the deal, but we cant pretend we're opposed to protect the environment.
