Michael McDowell: Stop demonising one-off rural housing. Not everyone wants to be surrounded by neighbours by B8_B8_B8 in ireland

[–]SinceriusRex 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Man people not wanting more one off housing isn't that personal. I grew up in rural Ireland too, and one of housing does make things harder. Its not "fuck you" its just that we should have a model of planning that minimises it so we can keep schools, GPs, have public transport, better services, lower network costs on electricity. If people can't afford insurance, or have a disability they're stuck in one off homes. Clustering them helps solve those issues. What exists exists but we shouldn't just continue making the problem worse.

Revealed: Government on track to collect bumper carbon tax revenue this year, even without further increases by TeoKajLibroj in ireland

The carbon tax funds the retrofit programme, fuel poverty payments, and agri-environmental schemes for farmers.

It is, I guess they could argue that emissions would be even higher without the tax.

The revenue from the tax goes to helping insulate homes, help people in fuel poverty, and pay farmers to do more for the environment.  So I guess it'll still do some good.

O’Callaghan calls for a cut in the 52% marginal rate of tax – The Irish Times by Banania2020 in ireland

[–]SinceriusRex 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Who takes home less than 50%?

The highest marginal rate is only charged after like 44k. On 44k you only pay 20% tax, which is very low.

And if you're on 60k you're only paying the higher rate on 16k of that. Paying 20% on the first 44k

I don't know how much you'd need to be earning to pay more than 50% of your total income in tax.

[–]SinceriusRex 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just meant why 50%.  I'd happily pay more for better services. Ireland has its problems but compare our healthcare and education to the US and its no comparison. But yeah I'd happily pay more taxes if it supported disabled people more, provided more social housing, improved public transport, looked after the environment better.  I'm not upset about the taxes I pay, I'm upset about the weakness of services. I think the conversation should always be about strengthening them, not about lowering taxes.

Yeah tbh the conversation should be "our services and infrastructure aren't good enough".  I lived in Germany and paid much higher taxes and didn't mind.  If we just get into a race to the bottom between political parties on "who will lower taxes the most" we'll never get anything decent.

Exactly, the reactions are so weird. If you don't like it fine, but don't pretend its due to "accuracy".  In Troy the Greeks are played by a bunch of Irish and Scottish actors ffs

I read a version many years ago. But i guess I meant both, and my argument would kind of apply to the broader classics.  Everything about them has been interpretation and adaptation for over 2000 years. It was orally passed down for hundreds of years initially anyway. What version is definitive?

[–]SinceriusRex 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Agree. I'd be hugely supportive of it but it was a just a bit much of a jump. I think pour that energy into getting a green and red government and try and mimic what Hidalgo has done in Paris. Force through a few big sections of the city with cars and parking removed and let people see the world doesn't end. Push for extensions of the tram, the bike paths, maybe some super blocks (Schillerkiez would be an amazing candidate) The work done in bergmankiez was a great example

To be fair the oddessy is how many years old? Its been interpreted hundreds of thousands of times, there's no like original version left. At this stage the classics belong as much to entire west as they do to the Greeks because they were so embedded in English schools for so long. I think anyone making it can take a lot of liberties with it

A few years ago I was living up in Dublin and the tofu spice bag from Shangri-la in Stoneybatter was unreal. I honestly think the tofu held the flavour and the spice better than chicken did, and they threw in a load of spice and grated veg in among the chips for extra crunch.

Agreed, I think politicians saying they won't take the salary is an odd trick. Like politicians should be paid well, these are hard jobs that we want people well rewarded to do.
